Semi OT: Former Michigan QB Pledge Messiah DeWeaver Commits to MSU

Submitted by alum96 on

Prepare for 5 years of "lack of respect" and "Michigan didn't want me so I am out to exact revenge" stories by Rexrode & Co.  Sets up a fun narrative between DeWeaver and Peters with both being Midwest top 15 type QBs.

Originally a commitment to Michigan, deWeaver re-opened his recruitment after former Wolverines coach Brady Hoke was fired and has made several unofficial visits to Michigan State.

Mississippi State, Penn State, Louisville and Kentucky were the other finalists in deWeaver's recruitment. He's rated the No 1 quarterback in Ohio and No. 12 Pro-Style QB in the nation by 247sports.

According to Rivals.com, deWeaver is rated the No. 8 QB in the nation and No. 232 player overall.

Last season, deWeaver said he was 150-for-210 passing for 1,900 yards, 24 touchdowns and nine interceptions.

Harbaugh.

Linkage.

It's not really Dantonio doing it. It's been the OC/QB coaches. Dantonio is a defensive coach. I really doubt he has much of a hand in the development of his QB's. He isn't even the primary recruiter for any of these kids, so he doesn't have a whole lot of contact. Harbaugh, being an offensive coach and former QB, is going to have a much bigger part in QB development.

What did Rexrode say that was so bad? I just read the article and he just gave his rankings from the various recruiting sites with a couple of quotes from the kid.

I read some MSU fans comments about DeWeaver talking about why he decommitted from UM. It was all about Hoke leaving and he was even saying Harbaugh tried to get him to stay. But I can't find the post now and I don't see anything via google search so I am starting to wonder if it was completely made up.

That wasn't his first choice. Really don't see the logic when you look at the total package. Unless he didn't have a choice which seems more likely.

Yeah, Urbs and JH passed on the kid.

I'm sure he has excellent talent but he wasn't what JH was looking for.  Him and Sparty fans need to move the  F  along.

So far we've seen Harbaugh have success at the high levels with a) an All-American, prototypical pocket passer in Andrew Luck and b) a next generation talent in Colin Kaepernick, a strong-armed kid who can run. Obviously, Peters fits the mold of the former. Messiah DeWeaver doesn't really fit in either category.

But Luck wasnt "Andrew Luck" coming out of HS. Sure he looked good, but there are dozens of guys a year who have similar profiles who don't pan out. And Kap was a 2nd round QB from a smallish school. So that wasn't a slam dunk. Finally, he teased out probably the best season in Alex Smith's career.

recruiter and reason for committing was Nussmeier. sure the new staff didn't re-recruit him, but it seems like a mutual parting of ways.

Yeah even the pro-MSU articles are saying he picked MSU over Penn State, Mississippi State, Louisville and Kentucky. If the UM offer was still present I would have to think it would be mentioned there.

My guess is Harbaugh would have let him keep his commitment but made no promises about what other or how many QB's he would recruit. I bet he is the only QB commit going to MSU and that is why it was more attractive to him.

Hope he does well either way. Just not against us. Seems like a good kid though.

Harbaugh wasn't a fan.  He wanted someone better, someone like Brandon Peters. Watch the dudes film. He's an athletic stud with prototype size and a very high level of natural passing talent and polish for a high school qb. This guy with learn Harbaugh's system and get stronger for at least two maybe three years and then will be released from Harbaugh's lab.

I'm betting when he committed to us all MSU fans assumed he was overrated and would get his ass kicked every year by MSU.

Now that he's with MSU, he's a future all American and will beat up on Michigan every year.

correctly, he decommitted right after Harbaugh visited him...like the same day. I don't know what was said but he obviously didn't like it. Best of luck to him except when he plays football.

Damn, that leaves us with only 6 schollie QBs to compete for one job in the Fall...

[editorial license as i'm aware Mr. Korn has to sit....but, sitting at the feet of the master Sir James ain't exactly bad either]

He is no better or worse than he was when he was a Michigan commit.  Look what they have done with QBs, if he has "IT" they will get him to the league. I am not sure nor do I care why he decomitted, but if it is because he wasn't being recruited by Jimmy then he will have a built in chip on his shoulder against Michigan.   Reminds me of the Star Wars the hate is strong in this one.

We may never know what happened behind the scenes leading to DeWeaver's commitment, nor how Messiah feels about Michigan and Harbaugh about the young man, but it's safe to say that things are working out for both parties.
Harbaugh has brought in Rudock, O'Korn, Gentry, and Peters in a very short time.  The QB competition will be a strong one, regardless of DeWeaver's inclusion.
I'm content.

If this kid is smart enough to get into michigan he should at least go somewhere he can actually use his brain. Staee is such an intellectual step down it makes no sense but, oh well.

Messiah speaks:

  • "....A lot of people like to say rumors that I lost my (Michigan) scholarship, that's completely untrue. I talked to coach Harbaugh when he got hired, he expressed how much he wanted me, (and) I just felt in my heart that Michigan State was the better school for me. It's that simple.''
