Semi-OT: Cold Weather BCS Bowl Games

Submitted by MGoRobo on

So having just read the article on m.go.licio.us on cold weather BCS bowl games, I'm glad to see there are still people out there willing to give the cold a shot when talking about bowl games.  I personally love snow football, and watching my team win in the snow is even better.

Patriots fans do this every year (among other teams), and the NFL has set a precedent with their recent decision on a New York Super Bowl for 2014.  I've heard many a student want to kill me when i wish for some snow late in the season, but I'm still hoping to see a full blown snow game before I graduate.

What's everyone's opinion on this? Pros/cons on this kind of game? Would it help solve the "is the SEC truly better outside of their warm comfort zone" debate?  I certainly think it would legitimize either how good they really are or how well they have been using that warmth to their advantage.

Not for the BCS bowls. As the articles says, the big bowls are set for where they are, and we'll get a playoff before any of them change or welcome a new bowl into their club.

HOWEVA, I think the Yankee Stadium Bowl is a great idea, and it would be great if one was put in Chicago as well. Maybe Boston and Philly/Pittsburgh could be considered too. They should be mid-level bowls at least featuring BCS conference teams. If the Motor City Bowl wasn't MAC vs. 6-6 Big Ten Team, I would probably like to go, and I think fans would be excited to be able to go see a game between some big name teams and couple it with a trip to some nice cities within the Union.

...I would think warm weather bowl games would be preferable. It's hard to imagine wanting to play in 10-degree weather. Playing in freezing temps can be a painful experience.

That said, I'd love to see USC and Alabama forced to play in the Big House in January!

I think it would be cool to have a 8 team playoff instead of the BCS.  The first round could be played on campus locations and then have the remaining games played at the Big Bowls, alternating years as the level of importance.

Example being one year the Rose Bowl is the Championship game, with the Orange Bowl and Fiesta Bowl being the Semi-Finals.  The Sugar Bowl would just be another Bowl game to teams that did not make it to the playoffs.  The following season have the Sugar Bowl as the Championship game, with the Rose Bowl and Orange Bowl as the Semi-Finals.
