Semi OT: Berkley Edwards first big offer (Cal)

According to 247's twitter, Berkley Edwards was just offered by the Cal Bears.  His recruitment has been picking up lately.  I am all for offering him if our class doesn't fill the way we want it to.  He's similar in size and speed (4.4) to Dennis Norfleet.

He is bound to earn a few more big offers soon.  I vote to offer him a walkon and have Braylon pay for it.

It's the same old story. Boy finds girl, boy loses girl, girl finds boy, boy forgets girl, boy remembers girl, girls dies in a tragic blimp accident over the Orange Bowl on New Year's Day.

I'll be nice and explain why everyone is breaking out in an Alanis Morrisette song in response to your comment.  When two things that have no direct effect on each come together in a puzzling, humorous or redundant way (I.E. - Berkley Edwards getting an offer at UC- Berkeley), it's a coincidence.

If two things that do have a direct effect on each other come together in a way that's humorously (or tragically) contrary of what's expected/intended (I.E. - Berkley ends up going to MSU and in a game against U of M gets 3 touchdowns in the last few minutes of a game to seal a comeback victory), that is irony.

The fact that he's similar to Norfleet means we're probably never going to offer him. We've got our scatback for the next four years, and in a power running offense that's all we need.

I still hope he gets more major offers because he can ball.

First of all, Norfleet hasn't hit campus yet.  We have no idea if he's going to be an adequate 'scat' back, let alone a good one.

Secondly, for all the talk of him taking a limited role a la Vincent Smith, we don't have any proven backs after Toussaint.  It could easily end up being one of the smaller backs we're brining in.

Third, Norfleet is likely to contribute in special teams right away.  Meaning that if Edwards was to red-shirt, you'd have a 2 year gap between the two.

Edwards has elite speed and quite obviously wants to come to Michigan.  He's not the same player as his brother, but we already had one Edwards who worked out extremely well after having a ho-hum recruiting profile.  This is a guy we should go after.  Can probably afford to wait on him, but in the end, I hope he is a Michigan Wolverine.

That's a nice story.  Good for Braylon and his mom.  That had the potential to turn into another "Scott's Tots" type of situation.

Rick Reily reffered to him as bar none the most generous athlete he has ever come across. Stories like that make me annoyed at all the flack he takes from the fan base here. He's a great player who has given a lot back to the university and the world in general. Granted, he has done some stupid stuff but I think the good far outweighs the bad.

That is the complete list to date - mostly MAC schools to date have made offers, but there have to be several schools  that could use a three-star all-purpose back. As someone whose high school was in the same conference as Chelsea, it's great to see SEC (NTSEC) talent get some looks now and again.

Will still bet cash he ends up at Michigan. Family has more than enough money to pay even if he doesn't get offered. On that note, I guarantee the staff has expressed their interest in him but that they may "need help" getting him in much like what the Mathews family did for Clay at USC. You really love Michigan? Let us use the ships on kids who dont have a wealthy family and pay his way (at least until we have an open ship).

He will be a Wolverine, offer or not.

I think it's an important offer because Cal is a team that recruits and uses speed.  They love guys like Berkely.

He was a legacy and Pete was pressured to offer HARD. He spoke common sense to them and they paid until room opened up (and he proved himself). Also, Clay was a Mathews spawn. He was going somewhere. His low ranking is kind of overblown as he never considered anywhere but usc and didnt really travel to camps. He was good. USC in the early- mid 2000's offer good? Doubt it but its similar to us in that Pete knew he could pay anyway and could take that risk due to how little interest Clay had in any other school.

I could be wrong, obviously. I just dont see how Edwards isn't somehow a Wolverine in the fall of 13.

Normally I would say Norfleet means we will never offer Be. Edwards.  However - if Norfleet is our best option as a return man, he won't redshirt.  You could bring in Be. Edwards and redshirt him, and get 2 years between him and Norfleet.

I think if Norfleet is good enough to avoid a redshirt, and there is a scholly for Be. Edwards in January - he gets an offer.  Pure speculation on my part, obviously.
