Semi-OT: Appalachian St to join FBS... in 2015
They're joining the sun belt along with Georgia Southern in 2015. One year after the replay. Go figure?
Never heard of them.
My memory and therapist say that I have never heard of that school.
Wait, it's coming back to me. Oh dear Lord, noooooooo.
I still can't think of that day without crying a little inside.
how important Michigan is to college football. UMass levied their game against Michigan as "proof" that they were deserving of Division I-A. How much you want to bet Appy State did the exact same?
Won't be long before Youngstown State makes a run of it.
What will it take for GVSU to jump to DI-FCS? They dominate or at one point have dominated nearly every D2 sport.
Probably a game against Michigan. "Look! We're on TV! We played Michigan!"
"we were close/ leading in the 3rd quarter!"
The football stadium is kind of small and the student section bleachers is realllllly small.

Is pretty easy to fill. GVSU would need a huge donation to get thier facilities up to par to move up a division.

I graduated with my B.S. from GVSU, and am proud to say that I attended just about every baseball, football, soccer, and volleyball that I could fit in my schedule.
The problem with the students at GV is that they expect to win at every sport, and don't see any reason to go watch us clobber another team, week after week.
I think that if they were to join D1, they would get a lot more interest from the student body to go and watch them play. Well, as long as admission to sporting events is still included in the tuition costs.
And I will say that I was embarrassed of the studnet section as a GVSU fan that went to every football game. They wouldn't go to games that were too cold. Or if we were winning by 20 at halftime, they would all leave.
But I'm a proud Laker and would love to see them moved up to D1
EMU, but that doesn't stop them from playing D-I. Why they are D-I is another debate. #Unsolved Mysteries
FCS would be the ideal move for EMU. They'd be the only the Michigan school in the FCS, they would be near the top of their conference in most years and could literally be national championship contenders.
"EMU is your Division I Football National Champion!" Surreal to say?
trying to recall who the heck this Appallachian was. . . Isn't this, like, ridiculously OT? Some random school? There's a lot of good Michigan stuff going on. . .
I think the major conferences/schools need to break away and form their own division.

How long before they join the Big 10?

Don't they realise all the cool kids are going to be Division III by then?

Per Dennis Dodd over at CBS, (LINK) in addition to Georgia Southern and Appalachian State, the Sun Belt will also reportedly pick up Idaho and New Mexico State as football-only members. Another interesting tidbit from the article:
"If the Sun Belt champion finishes as the highest rated team among the so-called Group of Five (along with Conference USA, new Big East, Mountain West and MAC) it will get a berth in one of the new playoff bowls beginning in 2014."
So, if I interpret this correctly, the potential - however exceedingly remote based on tie-ins and rankings - of a bowl matchup exists sometime far in the future if things aligned correctly.
