I can't remember when Michigan has had a good secondary in recent memory. Is it just me, or has our secondary been sub par for a long time? Maybe I'm missing something. I know, that this last Saturday they were going up against two of the best receivers in the country, but I must say I had flashbacks to The Horror and other games with the secondary's performance. Maybe some input from more informed observers would help. Thanks.
pretty good in 2006....
Minus the fact that they got torched by OSU and USC.
I’d say 2003 would be the last time we fielded a pretty dominant all around secondary.
I guess it depends on what you mean by "subpar." We've had a lot of decent players in the secondary, especially at corner, but that hasn't necessarily translated into lights-out pass defense.
Personally, I think our secondary would look better if our defensive line performed better. I've been disappointed with our defensive line for several years, and I think that opens up problems for our coverage.
Ernest "The Razor" Shazor.... miss that guy. Remember the pure joy when he popped the ball loose with 2 minutes left in that Purdue game and set up the win??
BONUS: Remember the shock when he went undrafted???
who could have benefited greatly under Coach Barwis' tutelage, IMO. Oh, what could have been, with world-class S & C.
If he played for Greg Robinson and Barwis, he'd probably be an OLB.
While I think all of Gittleson's charges would have benefitted from Barwis. Shazor did not flame out on draft day because of his physical tools - he did very poorly on the wonderlic test and also, iirc, some psych issues were identified during pre-draft testing.
I think we will all recall that he like a ton of bricks, but often also thought like one. He took terrible angles.
If anything Shazor may have benefitted from Gerg switching him to linebacker (although Brown is reportedly a smart player so no guarantees).
