Second Favorite Big Ten Team?
stock market.
"Michigan's Scout Team" = +1 for you sir.
I won't neg the original post (PSU; ugh), simply because the original question served up the opportunity for you to answer "Michigan's scout team." And that's enough for one day.
My answer, if some spoilsport insists that we can't pick "Michigan's scout team." Is this: the University of Chicago Maroons.
Screw Joe Paterno and Penn State. Joe Paterno can't bring Amos Alonzo Stagg's coffee. Whaever they call that shipwreck of a stadium in Bumfuk Pennsylvania, Stagg Field is better. They ran the freaking Manhattan Project and did nuclear fission there.
It is actually a nauseating thought to me; my "next favorite Big Ten team." It is like trying to decide my favorite Free Press columnist, or my favorite country within the Axis of Evil. Like, "who do you like better; the German Waffen SS, or the the Japanese Imperial Navy Kamikaze pilots?"
Hell No!
+1 to Michigan Scout Team!!!!!
I kind of like watching Northwestern manufacture wins against more talented teams--but that team has been Michigan too often for my tastes.
Can I say Indiana just because they don't beat Michigan?
lol michigans scout team...thats funny. that doesnt count though man

Also, welcome.
I've been here longer than you. :}
and wrong answer.
Does that help?
LoL - welcome to MGoBlog.
Any team that's playing OSU and if that team happens to be little brother than I'm rooting for the meteor that is heading towards the stadium.
Pittsburgh.
/Too soon?
Texas?
/Too implausible?
Northwestern or Minny, cuz they're both so innocent and non-threatening (most seasons, anyway).
Definitely PSU, there is just something about Joe-Pa. Even though I can't stand Newsome and their kicker (Fera?), both UM commits at one point.
seems convenient that newsome decommitted and tate committed - same with the beave and denard. couple that with the usa baseball player i hosted at my house two years ago who knows newsome, and who's father told me kevin is a good kid from a good family, but not a michigan caliber passer ... well i just think it was a mutual decommit.
I can't remember exactly, but didn't Tate commit shortly after the Sherrodick Beaver decommitment? Sometime in December maybe?
Tate committed in September at the Utah game, which was right after Newsome's decommit.
I have so much respect for that program.
And this is coming from a Jersey boy, who's friends are Penn State fans.
I've gotta say Wiscy, great stadium, great town, fans are intense but not too obnoxious. Have enough tradition to be serious but enough struggles to still be kind of an underdog.
agreed...they remind me of Michigan...they're just not as successful. They win in traditional fashion, have coaches with class and seem to have great 'student' athletes.
I took my then-fiance to my sister's place outside Madison 4 years back. The capital building looks great. State Street is great. But as we walked to/from the stadium, every time we rounded a corner another mob of students would see us and chant, "A--holes! A--holes!" As one mob faded off in one direction, another would appear.
All this while my 10 year-old niece was walking with us.
And we lost.
Definitely Northwestern. My sister went there and I live in Chicago so I've spent a bunch of time in Evanston. It's a cool town and the fans are pretty classy. That and they're not really much of a threat in most sports.
I'm from Minnesota so I guess I would have to say the Gophers, plus their teams have done less to annoy me then most other B10 teams, except for damn Gary Russell in 05.
University of Chicago.
I've always liked Iowa. I don't know what it is...
Oh, that's it.
Edit: Also, they are pretty classy.
I've always liked Iowa as well. They consistently play smart, fundamentals based football. They slowly suffocate teams out of games by managing the clock and field position very well. I always feel like they win by kicking 5 field goals and winning 15-14.
Also, while I don't really like Penn State or JoePa, the night game whiteouts in happy valley are pretty cool/intimidating to look at.
And the ratio of bars to people is 1:100.
And they have one of the school colors right!
Penn State. Love those uniforms. Almost as good as ours.
Not even close. I feel like I'm the only one who doesn't like PSU's uniforms. I like the color scheme, but that's about it.
Iowa no doubt. Every Iowa fan I have met has been cool and fun to talk to about football.
Great Stadium, coach seems like a stand up guy, cool helmets.
AND - almost every one of them say Michigan is their second favorite B10 team. Not sure why.
Angry Michigan Safety Hating God.
Angry Iowa Running Back Hating God.
Makes sense to me.
because they're similar to us in that they have a good college town and a good hockey team. not as good as ours though!
Iowa: Least annoying fan base, tons of NFL talent, Kirk Ferentz is a boss.
Penn State: Next-best Big Ten team at crippling SEC assholes. And Joe Pa looks like my late grandfather.
I sometimes get dragged to Michigan State games.
Mom says I have to support Lil Bro, but sometimes, like when the little prick just drew with permanent marker all over my door, I'd rather just be the one kicking his ass.
Translation: sometimes I root for MSU in a this-is-my-family kind of way, but other times when they've pissed me off recently, I secretly wish to see them suffer.
I probably would have gone to Wisconsin had I not gotten into Michigan, and Madison's beautiful -- great sailing too. So as far as a true 2nd favorite: probably the Badgers. A badger's like a Wolverine anyway.
Ditto here. I had two brothers go to State (one of them transferred to UM), and I really don't have any issues with them, so I sometimes find myself rooting for Sparty when they aren't playing us.
Madison is the best town in the Big Ten after Ann Arbor. Their teams are never great, but, man, they are a very tough opponent to beat.
Pyscho, drunk fans(yeah, we could use some of'em at The Big House). Most drunk I ever got was at the 2005 Michigan-Wisconsin loss; which I still say we should have won, and got robbed by the officials.
I disagree. Drunk fans annoy the hell out of me. Nothing is worse than some girl's drunk boyfriend elbowing his way into the seat beside you in row 12, when he's supposed to be in row 80, and then throwing up at your feet.
Northwestern. I have a lot of respect for Fitzgerald, and NW in general is the ultimate underdog. It's great when they knock off OSU or MSU.
Living there sucks enough, why pile on?
Lived there for 18 months when I was 7.
Was the worst 10 years of my life.
Is the school I have the hardest time rooting for in any situation. I like supporting the Big Ten most of the time, even when it's Ohio State in their bowl game. Marginally.
I live on the border of Detroit and I have more friends from high school at Michigan State right now than Michigan, including my sister. They talk so much shit about so many things that don't really matter and they make themselves up to be more relevant than they are constantly. After the hockey debacle against Miami, instead of receiving a "too bad," I received a load of "you didn't deserve to be there in the first place and the refs handed you both games at Munn to get you to the CCHA finals." Then they claimed the no-goal was a fair call.
Flash forward to March Madness...
MSU wins like 32532 of their games by a point or two. Against Butler, they are defeated by this same narrow margin. Their luck runs out.
Not a minute after the buzzer, every last State basketball fan on Facebook begins ranting about how shitty the officiating was during the entire game and how State should have won by a blowout. I really can't stand this sort of arrogance and brass neck, especially when most of the pretentious bullshit they throw out is completely undeserved.
When a Michigan fan displays arrogance, I get a little irritated. I mean, Michigan is a storied school and has accomplished a ridiculous amount of stuff, and there's reason for arrogance, but I still don't like it.
When a Michigan State fan displays arrogance, I just get pissed off because it's all smoke and not even a spark of fire.
Awesome fan base, sweet colors and unis, and Doublems' picture.
My uncle went there.
After that, probably Northwestern. I really hate the other teams.
I know nobody that actually hates Iowa... that's kind of strange that you do. Everyone's usually pretty positive towards them.
Back in the Hayden Frey/Chuck Long era, it was almost too easy to hate Iowa. More than Ohio State, more than MSU. Ferentz has made that team very classy, their fans are respectful, and playing them is always fun. Easy to consider them my second favorite, if I have one.
And I've decided that Dantonio is a worthy successor to King Douce, Hayden Frey.
Is an Iowa fan. I don't really have anything against their program, but my friend and I always root against each other's team.
Penn State. Joe Pa is a legend and they seem to be a team that plays and recruits the right way.
I love the way everybody is hanging on JoePa's nuts like he runs a squeaky clean program over in Happy Valley.
PSU is the original MSU.
"The show found that since 2002 (through 2008), 46 Penn State players have been charged with 163 criminal complaints. Forty-five of those complaints resulted in guilty pleas or convictions. Of the 46 players charged, 27 pleaded guilty or were convicted.
More recently, to show the problem is getting worse, 17 players were charged in 2007 with 72 crimes. Nine charges resulted in guilty pleas. The numbers screamed about a lack of control by the coaching staff and a lack of discipline by the players.
The response from Graham Spanier, the university president, was expected. "They're staggering numbers," he said. "They're very high and they shouldn't be that way.
"It's embarrassing to the university."
Professor Paul Clarke, who is vice chairman of the Faculty Senate athletics committee, also had an expected response. "This is really a black mark. It diminishes all of us."
To those who have followed Paterno closely in recent years, his response also was expected.
"I think you've done an awful lot of probing which bothers me that you might be on a witch hunt," he said.
The show focused on in an incident that occurred April 1, 2007. In response to one of their teammates and his girlfriend being involved in an altercation with three Penn State students, a group of football players, about 15, broke into an apartment on campus. Several students were beaten, including some not involved in the original altercation.
According to the show, one student was attacked with a beer bottle, another was struck with a wooden stool, a third was kicked in the face.
According to a report by the Judicial Affairs Department, which is the university's disciplinary arm, one of the football players involved said, "We knew we were going there to beat up people."
As a result of these vicious attacks, which no one on a college campus should expect, four players were temporarily expelled. The expulsions occurred during summer school, thus severely lessening the level of punishment. Additionally, the players were permitted to practice before their period of expulsion expired.
In other words, a whitewash."
It seems as though Penn State is the team most people are saying is their second fav. I have to agree. There is just something about them. It's probably all JoePa. My love for them has faltered some after seeing that Youtube, however.
I wonder how many of you also have a second favorite carpenter after Jesus.
Charisma Carpenter
Though this guy is a close second.
Too skinny?
Any Charisma Carpenter reference gets a +1, always.
Okay, I know Vila isn't, but is Norm Jewish? I have been wondering this since before the Internet.
This guy can fashion a great coffee table.
He's also good with levels.
Regis went to Notre Dame, and his phone number is in the alumni phone book. Don't ask how I know.
TUOOS...because Pryor is a true class act.
(If anyone takes this seriously may God have mercy on your soul, and mine)
One thing about the Big Ten is it's got no shortage of classy and likeable teams. For me it's a toss-up between Iowa, Penn State, and Wisconsin. Honorable mentions go to MSU and Purdue, as I have friends who went to both.
All in all though, in non-conference games I'll root for anyone except Ohio State. (Sole exception: national championship game vs. Florida, when ALL OF MY HATE was directed at Urban Meyer. And wouldn't ya know it, they let me down.)
I like both Iowa and Wisconsin. They both rely on and have a reputation as "old school Big Ten football." Whether or not that wins games, it's nice to see a team or two holding down the combination of insane defense and power running.
It is important to note that TAH-NOO-TAH is the definition of [clinically] insane defense. Iowa and Wisconsin are the definition of [rock-solid] insane defense.
Indiana. Basically my entire extended family went there including both parents, and my brother was the Drum Major at IU for two years in 2000/2001. Been to a lot of games in Bloomington, and while their fans really don't seem to give a rat's ass, it's still a fun time and a great city.
I'm a man. I'm 30. I can't ever imagine #3 overtaking the deuce.
I don't understand having a second Big Ten school at all. My sister got her Master's at Illinois and their football team can DIAGF as far as she's concerned. I guess it runs in the family.
Currently, Indiana...
No other team has provided the drama, the competitiveness and controversy tht OSU has provided Michigan. There is only one game I want OSU to lose every year--the last one. I love that they took on USC and Texas, and Miami (NTO).
No potato salad here.
I don't not like any other Big Ten Teams, Sam I Am!
I could not, would not, give Sparty a vote.
I will not, will not, pull for PSU over a goat.
I will not root on them Badgers in the rain.
I will not root on them Boilers on a train.
Not in the dark! Not in a tree!
Not in a car! Northwestern, You let me be!
I do not like them Hawkeyes.
I do not like them Buckeyes.
I want to beat them Hoosiers in our house.
I want to beat them Gophers like a Ike beat his spouse.
I do not like them Illini here or there.
I do not like them ANYWHERE
I do not like
other Big Ten Teams
and (Notre) Damn!
That was the best part.

them or IU, since their football program is so sad and the only famous guy that shows up to their games is John Cougar Mellencamp.
Hockey Teams.
My brother is a Purdue grad, therefore, Purdue. It used to be Iowa, though, and they're still a close third.
I lived in Madison for nearly twenty years, and when they were terrible and free tickets were easy to come by I went to a fair number of games. My wife used to raise money for the University.
I had been rooting for Penn State long before they joined the Big Ten. My mother had a friend in State College whose husband was a professor, and we used to stop there on our way to visit my grandparents out east. I used to like JoePa, too, although it's probably time for him to step down.
Having said, I'm always happy to see Michigan crush both teams.
I like Iowa because they good lower rated recruits but play well. I like PSU too.
Penn State: legendary coach; 2nd best home uniforms, white-outs look pretty impressive.
and remain true to the Gophies (although its a distant second to UM). The first UM football game I ever saw was @Minny in the Hubert H Humphrey Metrodome. U of M won 58-7(!!!) under G Moeller when I was just 7 years old.
I couldn't find stats but I vividly remember Tyron Wheatley just going apeshit in the game. so Go Blue! and, also Gophies, try not to embarass yourselves.
2006
They consistently put together good teams with limited resources, and their fans seem to have a sense of humor.
I usually find myself rooting for the underdog in most college games (except of course anyone playing Michigan). Since NW was the underdog in so many games so often... perhaps not recently but when I was growing up they were always so bad.
That, and I like the enthusiasm that NW's coach has. You have to think he's gonna be around for a while, he seems to be doing a very good job considering the school he's coaching at.
So, NW. And anyone playing against OSU.
Sorry 'bout that.
I'd go with Penn State too. I don't find there fans annoying at all. They're a friendly, not-to cocky bunch who hate OSU. Good in my book.
definitely ohio state baby! as a matter of fact...I HATE MICHIGAN AND I ABSOLUTELY LOVE OHIO STATE!!!!
GO BUCKEYES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
TERRELLE PRYOR BABY!
OHIO STATE IS #1
Over/Under -50 on this post?
Under. Second page rarely gets the attention it needs sometimes.
Can we not even give this guy the satisfaction of being neg-banged please?
Although they are annoyingly competitive against us, you have to respect a school that can win despite pretty significant academic restrictions. For the same reason, Vandy is by far my favorite SEC school.
Lately I've rooted a bit for Indiana, mostly just out of pity.
My dad graduated from Wisconsin so I've rooted for them, but I might go to Northwestern for college. Those two would be 2A and 2B for me.
without a doubt.
I hate OSU, MSU, PSU and Wisconsin.
I don't like Iowa.
I'm indifferent about Indiana, Minnesota, Purdue and Northwestern.
