SEC stepping up in game music
So the SEC is following the ACC to allow more piped in music during the game between plays.

The rap/rock pipes will continue to spread in my opinion until all stadiums are blaring all the time.

Good thing you don't root for an SEC team then I guess.. Just because your allowed to do this doesn't mean a school has to do it.

The idea that the purpose of the piped-in music is "home field advantage" is also fascinating.
Piped-in music is a lame marketing department response to increasing no-shows (even a problem in Alabama, I understand). "Kids aren't showing up. What can we do to get them to show up?" "Kids like music, right?" "Oh, yeah, let's play some raps between plays. Kids like raps." "Okay, but not that. We have to make the music more alum-friendly too." "Good point. How about 'Build Me Up Buttercup?'"
So basically the same thought process that led to Poochie the Dog is what is leading to piped-in music.

If it were up to me, Michigan would build a carillon tower into the future south endzone concourse, becoming the first university in the world with three, count 'em, three carillon towers. $400,000 for the instrument plust $2 million for the tower will get you an instrument capable of A LOT of sound without amplification, more than capable of maintaining traditional homefield advantage in perpetuity.
Imagine Seven Nation Army with a bell instrument. Less nauseating, right? Sweet Caroline might be listenable as well. Or, we could make the hard choice and use track time to expose local musicians thereby creating positive synergy with the local economy, but no one's going to do that when Hell's Bells and its wonderful recording of a Taylor bell is sitting on the shelf.

I don't know what it says about me that I think this is actually kind of an awesome idea. In part it fits with the fact that, as Brian likes to point out, in college sports, weird is good. Few things would be weirder than a giant bell tower thundering before third downs, and therefore I am for it.
I love bell music and feel a carillon tower as tall as the luxury boxes - or two, at the north and south poles of the stadium - would be amazing and probably much louder than the fans in the stadium, save the remnants of the student section.
We could have dueling carillons at halftime.

I grew up cheering for the Wittenberg Tigers. Before every game the team ran out to "Eye of the Tiger". It was awesome. The rest of the game, there was no piped in music. It was awesome.
When the Cincinnatti Bengals were good (the first time in the late 80's early 90's) they used to play "Welcome to the Jungle" before the game. Guns N Roses was the hotest thing in music and playing welcome to the jungle when your team mascot is a tiger was kind of awesome. There was hardly any other piped in music during the game. It was awesome.
I have had a chance to go to a few Red Sox games over the years. They play "Sweet Caroline" during the 7th inning stretch. Everyone sings along. It is awesome. It's been a few years since I have been, but I hardly remember any other music throughout the game. Games at Fenway are awesome!
Why can't people get it? A song that means something or has a unique association played once at a sporting event is awesome. A constant bombardment of music throughout a full sporting event is NOT awesome. If I want that, I'll go to a club or concert, or put my ear buds in. That's what "the kids" (who supposedly love this stuff) do. When you go to a game, you typically go for the...uh....game.
