seat of pants poll: 2013 football v basketball

All but one of you should now predict, which ends up higher in post-season polls:  2013 football team, or 2013-2014 men's basketball team?

(The one of you who can't vote is The Knowledge.  No fair knowing the future)

That is all.  Yes.  Commence.

Gonna need to see some interior line play and Walton before I can make that guess.

If I had to, basketball.

It really is a toss up. With McGary and GR3 coming back, we're gonna be very strong next year in basketball. And with Gardner as the full-time starter and the defense looking like one of the best in recent memory, football has a chance to jump up pretty high in the polls as the season progresses. It's an exciting time to be a Michigan Wolverine! Go Blue!!

Basketball. I think UM still has the nucleus to be a top-team. Not as sure about football. We've got lots of talent with young kids, but many are not tested yet.

This is a really tough one. I was just thinking that this should be a fantastic season for both. I think the schedule sets up football well. The basketball team will make a run this year once everyone gets to gel. If I had to pick I would guess football. But not by very much.

I think both will be ranked very high after their seasons, but I have no idea which one will be ranked higher. The future is very bright for both teams.

Inside top 10

I think based on the pieces that we have and good coaching, we can slide into the top 10 in both.  but, if our clutch players can stay clutch, and our incoming talent can contribute at a high level, then we bounce into the top 5.

both coaches have tasted success but lost/graduated some talent and experience/ leadership. i think the coaching edge goes to football only because Greg Mattison is a football heizenburg.  with regard to the returning pieces, they both have a solid core of players.  I give the experience edge to basketball because they got so close to winning it all.  and both groups have some GREAT potential with freshmen recruits.  I give the edge to football because the freshman/ RS sophomore talent on the defensive and offensive lines will outplay their senior position holders.

all in all, it will come down to the unknown youth (derrick green and darboh vs. walton and irving).  also it will come down to returning players getting better... (levert, stauskas, and mcgary vs. gardner, ross, and countess).

Basketball

I bet football loses a couple games but gets an elite bowl because This is Michigan...and gets beat.

Michigan basketball loses somewhere in the final 4.

Hockey

I vote for hockey.  There is no way that the hockey team will have two down years in a row.  They will be supremely motivated next year.

I think the football team

I think the football team ends up 9-3/10-2 so that'd probably put them somewhere between #5 and maybe #15.

Basketball team..who knows. I suppose it depends on how good Walton is and how much off-season development there is but I certainly think a final four run is plausible. Howeva, one and done basketball is absurd and the team could enter the tournament #15 and end up anywhere from #1 to unranked based on when they lose

But I've thought for a couple years NOW that the football team will be REALLY good in 2014.

Football

Are you asking final regular season poll before tourney/bowls? If so, then football. I think both will be in the 2-9 range. Football probably at 5 with a loss. 2 if everything falls right and we run it. Basketball will be better in big ten play and probably finish 7 or 8. I don't think we will be as dangerous in march.

They both tie at #1. Then, in

They both tie at #1. Then, in an effort to determine the ultimate winner, they each write an essay to Kate Upton and have her decide which is better. Then Basketball wins because Spike MF Albrecht.

Basketball #1 Overall Seed in the Dance

Derrick Walton will have a field day with all of these weapons around him and he can straight fill it up too! Where's the Final Four next year? Atlanta was amazing, I need to book my accomidations.

Football will make the Rose Bowl, ranked #2! Go Blue!

Football.

I have a hunch that the pups on the interior line are going to be just fine. That and the defense is, well, coached by Greg Mattison, so that'll be fine too. We have a favorable schedule and the momentum from the recruiting trail will carry over to the gridiron. 12-0.

Tough Call

Basketball returns more sure bets than football does, but football has a great team returning and some talented young players.  I'd probably have to go with basketball, with the caveat that come March Madness, anything can happen (see tournament '12 and '13).

Ask me again after the ND game.  If our interior O-line can hold up against ND...well, let's just  say Kate will be dancing, muppetts will be singing, and Ohio will be crying.
