This Season's Bowl Gifts

SportBusiness Journal releases its seventh annual breakdown of the gift packages players receive for their participation in postseason bowl games. Article here.

From the article:

The NCAA allows each bowl to award up to $550 worth of gifts to 125 participants per school. Schools can, and almost always do, buy additional packages that they can distribute to participants beyond that 125 limit. In addition, participants can receive awards worth up to $400 from the school and up to $400 from the conference for postseason play, covering both conference title games and any bowl game.

This season, Michigan's Outback Bowl bound participants will receive a $150 Best Buy gift card, a Fossil watch, ring, and cap, as well as an Outback Steakhouse gift card.

Also interesting, to me at least, is the increase in the number of players who are choosing to select gifts for family members and other close friends:

When we were at the Alabama-Texas BCS championship game in 2010, one of the Alabama players came to me and said he wanted to select the watch with the bowl logo, but asked if we could fit it to someone else,” said Cooperstein, who was running the gift suite on behalf of the Rose Bowl committee. “I wasn’t quite sure what he meant, but he disappeared and came back a few minutes later with his grandfather in a wheelchair and said he wanted to give his bowl watch to him. It was a very emotional experience for everyone.”

The spirit of liberty is the spirit which is not too sure that it is right.

The iPad 2 certainly looks to be the best single gift.  I also noticed an (apparent) abundance of Fossil watches and Oakley sunglasses.  I wonder if these are just popular with athletes or just a reflection of a larger sponsorship/partnership on the part of Fossil and Oakley?

There's a reason the press releases say "a Fossil watch" rather than just "a comemorative XX Bowl game watch."

Maybe I can understand it for softball/baseball/golf/tennis where having a "sport frame" actually keeps them on your head while you compete, but I just do not like the way they look. Ray Ban would be a way better choice, IMHO, but like you say, it's probably the sponsorships those companies have.

Fossil's are okay, but I feel like most people that would wear a watch already have one. The gift suits/iPad sound like the way to go, for sure.

I had the very same thought when reading the article.  Everyone knows the NCAA rules are arbitrary at best and absolutely asinine at worst.  I guess the only real difference between receiving cream cheese on your bagles and $1,500 of free stuff for a bowl game is that the NCAA has decided free stuff from bowl committees is much less hazardous than cream cheese for breakfast.

*IIRC, the NCAA has changed its stance on "the cream cheese danger", but I think the larger point still remains.

Back when I was in school and we went to the Alamo bowl all the players got X-Box 360's. This was the same year that they released them and everyone waited in line for 30 hours trying to get one. So normally I was pissed that they got one, but glad that I was on the same floor and got to play it with them all the time. Lots of COD:2 was played against an OL and you didn't want to beat him often as he didn't know his own strength against regular folk.
