Scouting Report: Tyriq Thompson

Submitted by Magnus on

This week's scouting report is on Detroit (MI) King linebacker Tyriq Thompson, and we all know he's the son of former Michigan safety Clarence Thompson. ESPN is silly if they think this kid can play safety, but I've come to expect that from ESPN. The Worldwide Leader always seems to be playing catch-up when it comes to recruiting.

Kid had a monster year last year. Just a straight up tackling machine. You never know what type of coaching kids are getting at that level but the weaknesses seem very fixable with college coaching.

Do you think he would have even gotten an offer if it wasn't for his dad being a former player? Obviously the coaches had to like something about him to offer him, but I wonder with kids like him and Wangler.
Hopefully they both prove me wrong.

Some months ago, there was a great thread on legacy players through the years and the list grew rather lengthy, as I recall. It seems that Michigan players have established a nice tradition of begetting future Michigan players in a fair number of instances, and it is a tradition I personally don't mind in the slightest.

Just look at Kovacs.

Continually and relentlessly endeavoring to improve, by any and all means necessary and possible, is the elixor of success.

It sounds like he will appreciate the opportunity. The rest is at least partially up to him.

The Super Bowl player intros will once again include a few guys who were unheralded out of high school, did not attend elite programs, but who are starting on the biggest stage in the game.

Yeah but for every Jordan Kovacs or Richard Sherman there are hundreds of Ricardo Millers and Bo Devers.

It is absurd to imply causation and say that "Jordan Kovacs was unheralded and turned out to be great...Tyriq Thompson is unheralded, ipso facto, he will be great."

Maybe he will, maybe he won't.

I clicked on the link and other than embedded in the banner, there was not a single picture of a fighter jet flying on the whole front page. Hmmmm....

Reminds me of a story a Canadian co-worker told me about Canada providing a helicopter ("a" as in 1) to help the U.S. with the Afghanistan war when it first started. It arrived broken and was sent back to Canada. That was the sum total of their air support.

to write off a 2015 legacy. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but let this young man play some more football before we say he's might just ride the bench.

I totally defer to Magnus on talent evaluation.  However, even if this kid never plays a down of football during a game here, I think that having the son of a former player on the team has another benefit, given where our program is.  I know that many will disagree, but it looks to me like Michigan has really lost a bit of its connection to what made it great in the past.  The kids on the team today only really remember a Michigan football program that was struggling and involved in some controversy / coaching changes / divided fanbase, and which is second to MSU in-state and far from the upper eschelon of the B10.  Let's not assign blame, but this is the current state of Michigan football; in transition, returning to glory, still struggling and still not on par with our rivals.

I think that kids that were raised by former players, and who can speak with pride about what Michigan was before the recent 7-year (starting with Carr's last season through this most recent one) rough patch are a value to the team.  Hoke like to talk about "this is Michigan, fergodsake" but having kids on the team who actually know what that means may be a value to the program long term.

I agree that it might be helpful, but hopefully guys like the Wanglers, Runyan, and Wheatley can carry that torch. It's important to have a good mix of talent and glue guys, so I guess it's up to the coach(es) to decide how much is needed.
