Scouting Report: Keisean Lucier-South
This week's scouting report is on the newly offered Keisean Lucier-South from Orange (CA) Lutheran. For whatever reason, I feel like he's the Michigan Corner of the Internet's third favorite (or most desired?) player in the class, behind George Campbell and Damien Harris. I guess that's what happens when a top 100 player from California says Michigan is his "dream school."

That frame looks like it can handle a lot more muscle mass. I would love to see a Frank Clark body transformation happen to this guy.

I don't know... Clark is something like 273 lbs. at about 6'2". An equivalent amount of junk in Lucier-South's trunk would make him a little too large. I mean, I think ~270 would be a good weight, but he would be thinner than Clark at that weight.

Yeah, Clark is a thick beast at his heigh/weight. Maybe I'm thinking more of Taco Charlton weight and frame (as you mention in your write-up) as a nice landing zone for him. Although, will Taco put on 50 more pounds in the next 2-3 years?! Or will the strength and fitness modis operandi be to sculpt him some more, add some strength, but not go all protein-shake, 10000 calorie die mode on him to bulk him up as quickly as possible?

Charlton was about 249 lbs. when he graduated, IIRC, and he was listed at 270 lbs. last season. So I don't think he's going to add another 50 lbs. I wouldn't be surprised to see him play this upcoming season at 270-275 on the weakside, so I think it's just a matter of getting him stronger, not necessarily adding mass.

Seeing that list of the 10 toughest conferences actually was kind of illuminating. When you're the #7 WDE per Rivals and you're in the 2nd toughest conference among high schools in the nation, I think that does say something about ability in a way. If he could get to 6'6" and 260 or so and be as speedy as described, that would be a nice asset on the line certainly.

That article is from 2010.

The quality of the league has probably not changed much in the past three years. In fact, some of the guys I mentioned in the article are guys who are still around, like the guys at St. John Bosco.

Whoops. I think I got it right on the write-up but then typed it wrong on here. Thanks.

You sound pessimistic, this kid is the real deal, playing in arguably the toughest league in the country. I know its tough to bring west cost kids to the polar vortex, but he's been waiting for this offer. Michigan needs these type of athletes, you're not finding this kid in the midwest.

What you perceive as pessimism is probably caution that comes from watching dozens of "can't miss" prospects, well... miss.

I hear Su'a Cravens is mulling a transfer to Michigan due to the coaching shakeup at SC.

I agree 100% about kids from SoCal signing, but I think they have a real shot here. He reminds me more of a Jevon Kearse type, even if he puts on weight and slows a bit, you still find a spot for him.

What exactly seems pessimistic?

Sounds like you're not sure why he's one of the most desired recruits(by michigan fans), or maybe you just doubt that he's truly interested. BTW, your recruiting insite is greatly appreciated.
January 24th, 2014 at 12:13 PM ^
I don't doubt that he's interested. I just think it's curious that a guy who's halfway across the country and in the lower half of the top 100 is so sought after by Michigan fans. I would think that while Michigan fans are still early enough in the recruiting cycle to have pipe dreams about getting most of the best players in the country, they might set their sights a little higher (like, players in the top 30 or so).

Is his dream school..why? What makes us so appealing to him in cali
January 24th, 2014 at 11:48 AM ^
He grew up as a Michigan fan. Sometimes that just happens. We all have friends who grew up in Michigan but like Duke basketball or Florida State football, etc.

If he's listed at 218 now, I think he'd be best suited between 240 and 250.
Far too many times we've seen kids think they need to pack on a bunch of weight to get to a good playing weight and lose what makes them most effective.
Yeah if he maintains the speed then getting to 265 or something would be great, but I'd rather have a lightning quick 245lb pass rusher than a medium quick 265lber who can't get around a tackle as easily anymore.
January 24th, 2014 at 12:11 PM ^
It depends. If he goes somewhere and plays outside linebacker, I think he might be okay around 250 or so. If he comes to Michigan to play weakside end, they'll probably want him in that 265-270 lb. range. At least that's been the trend so far for Hoke/Mattison.

If I'm reading this right, KLS must be the first recruit in the history of recruiting to have pad level as a... strength?
January 24th, 2014 at 5:06 PM ^
Dr. Hamlet III had very good pad level as well. Couldn't use his hands worth a damn, though.

Blasphemy! It must be a typo!
