If you're frustrated by last night's game - especially the refereeing - and want to think about football, this week's scouting report is on Oakley (CA) Freedom running back Joe Mixon. When I was asked a month or two ago for my wish list of 16 recruits from the 2014 class, Mixon was neck-and-neck with Elijah Hood for my top choice of running back. He has a good combination of speed, power, size, and receiving ability, and he just appears to be a very good all-around prospect. Michigan made his top fifteen list not long ago, which means there's at least a chance.
Scouting Report: Joe Mixon
If you're taking requests, I'd be curious about your thoughts of KJ Williams, who seems like he could part of this WR class.
Mixon feels very unlikely.
He will probably be my next subject. I scroll through the positions each week so I hit each spot, and WR is next on the list.
Senor Magnus, with Green a 5* RB already being on campus in 2014 do you see an upper tear RB like Mixon or Hood wanting to sign with Michigan? Seems like most high ranking RBs seem to go for schools that have an active RB role needing to be filled.
Alabama begs to differ.
I think some running backs look for immediate playing time, but others look for where they can develop and eventually be a 1,000 yard rusher and get picked for the NFL. There are probably some kids who would be turned off by the presence of Green, but others might like the idea of splitting carries with someone (like Eddie Lacy and TJ Yeldon) so they can show their skills without getting beaten up too much. Some good teams just build up a stable of good backs (Alabama, USC, etc.) and then let the chips fall where they may. Some guys split carries, some guys transfer, etc.
If Hood attends ND, he'll have 5* Greg Bryant and 4* Tarean Folston from the 2013 class in addition to George Atkinson if he returns for his senior year.
Recent indications are that Hood wants to stay closer to home, such as UNC.
I have no substantive comment. Just want to thank you for for the football post. This was, in fact, exactly what I needed.
Dude's offer sheet is very impressive, with offers from major schools in every area of the country. For that reason alone, he looks like a must-get.
Mixon is an impressive package of speed, agility, and strength. I have to disagree with the "good but not great" speed assessment--I believe his speed is VERY good, but not quite elite. We're talking A- speed here.
I have concerns about ball security, but that's just based on looking at this grainy video. I have no idea how often he fumbled.
Overall, I love his north-south style, strength, speed, and agility. His toughness and grit look good. He is probably my favorite RB target.
I agree that his speed would be in the A- or maybe B+ category. It's not really a weakness, but he's not the absolute fastest guy out there, either.
Joe Mixon would be a nice pickup, but given the QB situation, I think we should try to get John Moxon from West Canaan, TX. That dude is a stud!
