Scouting Report: Henry Poggi

This week's scouting report is on Baltimore (MD) Gilman defensive tackle/athlete Henry Poggi.  I came away pretty impressed with how much he improved from his sophomore to junior season.  He seems like a kid who is a pretty safe bet to be successful because he's got a good head on his shoulders, a good understanding of the game, and a pretty good set of athletic skills.

One thing about Graham is that he got off the ball really well, stayed low, and was extremely powerful.  When you get off the ball that fast, sometimes it doesn't matter so much how long your arms are because you can get into the offensive lineman's body before he can get his hands on you.  Poggi isn't as quick/fast/explosive as Graham, so therefore, a 6'7" offensive tackle and a 6'5" tight end are going to have time to get into Poggi's body before he can control them.

Wouldn't you say that the limiting factor for him being a 5 tech is his (lack of) ability to speed rush? I think you mentioned that on your site but listed height as the key factor here.

I don't understand why everyone is asking Magnus about his ability to play outside.

The coaches were all over Joshua Garnett, too, and we all know how that turned out.

I like how you give reports and don't hold back.  But found out it can back fire like the LTT thing. One last thing: Can you explain the 3-tech and 5-tech philosophy (Preferably in the TTB). This is a good point. For example, the doctors told me I was going to be 6'4" and I ended up 5'9" (at least on a good day)

I apologize about the dress code, sir, but my next party is a hayride

ty Sir. He'd be a nice addition. Thankfully he'd probably get to redshirt, considering we have something resembling depth at 3-tech (although nothing proven at this point).

4.7 Forty? Even with a fake time thats freaking fast for a lineman. You describe traits of a very coachable player with a high ceiling: Lineage/intellingence, technique, speed...Our S&C coaches got Roh bulked up pretty well in 2 seasons, with this kids frame he can make it nearer to 300 in 4+ years. With visits in the future from kids like Bosa and Vanderdoes I feel very good about the rest of this class, but Hoke & Co. are pretty ahead of the curve and seem to have good backups on the radar so I'm not worried about bodies or numbers anymore.

I loved the film of this kid.  I see what you're saying about not being explosive but he is square to his guy on every block and appears "county boy strong".  He seems like a kid that will never be a 10 but will always be an 8.  The first play set up the whole tape - he tossed his guy aside like a rag doll.  Definitely will be interested in seeing how he progresses physically.

He looks like a classic hog...not too quick, but with a great motor and good speed.  He's not a Suh-type of line dominator, but a smart player who uses what he has well and plays with a mean streak.  I believe he could be a very good DT (not NT) and fits Mattison's style of player.  I don't see a future NFL star, but potentially a college standout who, at worst, is probably a two-year starter.

Thank you, Coach Hoke, for bringing Michigan back.
