This week's scouting report is on Baltimore (MD) Gilman defensive tackle/athlete Henry Poggi. I came away pretty impressed with how much he improved from his sophomore to junior season. He seems like a kid who is a pretty safe bet to be successful because he's got a good head on his shoulders, a good understanding of the game, and a pretty good set of athletic skills.
Scouting Report: Henry Poggi
Plus that name would just look amazing spread out in maize on the back of a home Jersey.
Magnus, what do you think of his ability to play the 5-tech if need be?
Unless he hits a growth spurt (and I kind of doubt he will), I think he might be too short to play defensive end.
Wasn't BG 6'2"..... I know he was BG (!) Fergodsakes but I think he played both SDE and WDE...... that said I understand wanting SDEs at 6'5" or better.
Thanks as always for the unvarnished analysis.
One thing about Graham is that he got off the ball really well, stayed low, and was extremely powerful. When you get off the ball that fast, sometimes it doesn't matter so much how long your arms are because you can get into the offensive lineman's body before he can get his hands on you. Poggi isn't as quick/fast/explosive as Graham, so therefore, a 6'7" offensive tackle and a 6'5" tight end are going to have time to get into Poggi's body before he can control them.
Wouldn't you say that the limiting factor for him being a 5 tech is his (lack of) ability to speed rush? I think you mentioned that on your site but listed height as the key factor here.
That's another part of it, yeah, but the 5-tech defensive end often isn't a speed rusher because of where he aligns and who's blocking him.
But why are we even asking if he can play the 5-tech/SDE position? We have PLENTY of those.
I don't understand why everyone is asking Magnus about his ability to play outside.
- We NEED DTs and NGs!!!
- We NEED DTs and NGs!!!
Great work, Magnus. He looks like he has the stuff to be a solid d-line contributor if he keeps working hard. I would love to see this kid in the maize and blue.
Henry's gonna need to bulk up a little bit but I likes what I sees. Thanks Magnus.
I like this kid alot good hands and hits hard. Magnus, if we don't get him is the next viable option Webb?
Webb is visiting in April, so there's a chance. I've said all along that I think Michigan will have to offer more defensive tackles to get two. I think we're pretty strong with Poggi, but most of the other guys we've offered are probably going elsewhere.
So you don't like our chances with Vanderdoes then? I mean, no one should like their chances with Vanderdoes really considering Saban, Tosh Lupoi, and Chip Kelly are all after him, but from what I've read the coaches are putting the full court press on him.
He's a really good player and I would love to grab him, but no, I don't like our chances.
The fact that he has shown much improvement is a great sign that he is coachable. I believe he has a great future ahead of him.
I like your analysis. However, you are looking at tape of a 15 or 16yr old kid. Unless we have his growth plate chart we have no idea if he's going to grow or not.
Well, heredity plays a big factor in height. Both of his older brothers are 6'2", and his dad isn't particularly tall. So . . . yeah, we do have a pretty good idea that he won't hit a significant growth spurt. I'm not saying he won't, but it's not particularly likely.
Manus I agree with you, but just as an example I will use myself. My grandfather on my dads side was about 5'10"-5'11", my dad got up to about 6'2.5", and right now at 22 I'm 6'4.5" (6'5" in baseball cleats) so while I agree with you that the likelihood is that he will stay pretty close to where his brothers are, the possibility exists that he could add a few inches
I know there are exceptions. All I'm saying is that it's unlikely. If he grows taller, maybe he can play defensive end.
What are YOUR reasons Vanderdoes goes elsewhere Mr. Magnus?? Thought Tremendous stated TE Coach Ferrigno is all over him and Brady Hoke will be in touch. He had stated he has VERY, VERY high intrest and will be using his Official to us (actions speak louder than words). He wants to play with a championship contencder and he see's that in UM. The current commits UM have has piqued his interest. Curious on your end sir if you can be so kind. . .
Tremendous tends be a very optimistic blog. I am not quite so optimistic (some would even say I'm a pessimist). Vanderdoes is being recruited by a lot of west coast schools, and most analysts seem to think he'll stay on the west coast. I wouldn't be surprised to see him go to Oklahoma, but otherwise, I expect him to stay out there (USC if he gets an offer, UCLA, Oregon, etc.).
The coaches were all over Joshua Garnett, too, and we all know how that turned out.
Wouldn't say pessimist. Just straight forward and bluntly (People who are optimistic may tend to believe your a pessimist). Thanks for the feedback however. I like how you give reports and don't hold back. But found out it can back fire like the LTT thing. One last thing: Can you explain the 3-tech and 5-tech philosophy (Preferably in the TTB). As far as height/weight and responsibilities. Been watching from the early 80's (when they were annouced as D-Lines) and not use to these new terms. Like SAM, WILL, BIll, JACK AND JILL.
I don't really see the Logan Tuley-Tillman thing as backfiring, by the way. It was honest analysis, and obviously, the truth isn't always good news. I agreed with some commenters who thought it could have been worded better, but the meaning would be the same. He's got a lot of work to do on his technique, whether I say it nicely or bluntly.
The wishfull thinking fairy keeps visiting me on every one of these West coast guys who say they love Michigan. I keep Hoking that Hoke has this magical connnection with these younger kids from SDSU. Really though, it comes down to a long ways away issue and tons of Championship caliber teams in their backyard. Really takes a Maverick to want to go from Cali to the beautiful Michigan climate.
Who would you say we have the best chance with this year in California?
I don't really know if there's anyone who has very strong interest. Walker, Cravens, Vanderdoes, and Qualls are all interested. If we get one of the guys from that bunch, I'll be satisfied.
This is a good point. For example, the doctors told me I was going to be 6'4" and I ended up 5'9" (at least on a good day)
i hope someday to lead a hokey poggi dance at michigan stadium
Do we know what his recruitment timeline is?
I believe I read that he is deciding by the end of April. But I may be mistaken.
ty Sir. He'd be a nice addition. Thankfully he'd probably get to redshirt, considering we have something resembling depth at 3-tech (although nothing proven at this point).
I haven't read the report yet, but if you said anything bad I'm going to start a thread bitching about it.
I'm going to start a thread asking if anyone has heard from WolvinLA lately.
To be honest, I hope I get to the point in my life where I'm off MGoBlog long enough that someone wonders where I am. But this place is like my crack, so I doubt anyone will be wondering.
That's not gonna happen. You're gonna be 83 years old and still visiting MGoBlog 50 times a day.
4.7 Forty? Even with a fake time thats freaking fast for a lineman. You describe traits of a very coachable player with a high ceiling: Lineage/intellingence, technique, speed...Our S&C coaches got Roh bulked up pretty well in 2 seasons, with this kids frame he can make it nearer to 300 in 4+ years. With visits in the future from kids like Bosa and Vanderdoes I feel very good about the rest of this class, but Hoke & Co. are pretty ahead of the curve and seem to have good backups on the radar so I'm not worried about bodies or numbers anymore.
I think he will commit at the spring game. That is if he's going.
I'm guessing this is a joke...right?
I loved the film of this kid. I see what you're saying about not being explosive but he is square to his guy on every block and appears "county boy strong". He seems like a kid that will never be a 10 but will always be an 8. The first play set up the whole tape - he tossed his guy aside like a rag doll. Definitely will be interested in seeing how he progresses physically.
from the video. The first play shows strength and athleticism, but a lot of the rest is at a distance or plays where he's blocking. I don't know how he can be fully evaluated based on this, but what the hell do I know
There are clips and highlights scattered around the internet to go along with the Youtube highlights I posted.
He looks like a classic hog...not too quick, but with a great motor and good speed. He's not a Suh-type of line dominator, but a smart player who uses what he has well and plays with a mean streak. I believe he could be a very good DT (not NT) and fits Mattison's style of player. I don't see a future NFL star, but potentially a college standout who, at worst, is probably a two-year starter.
