Scouting JT Barrett: Spring Game Film

Submitted by UAUM on

With BM out this year, I've been very interested in what his replacement will be like.  From his OSU spring game film, I don't think Barrett is a guy who can be easily dismissed.  Here's the tape:

Thoughts from the analysts welcome.

Sorry I don't know how to embedd.

Anyone thinking the Bucks won't miss Braxton Miller are being silly.  He is the 2-time Big Ten Offensive Player of the year!  Barrett hasn't seen live game action in over 2 years.  There will be a drop off, and it will be momentous.

I'm certainly no expert, but as others have said, it looks like he should develop well throughout the season unless his O-Line gives him zero support and he develops happy feet and other problems like Gardner did last year.

I'm too lazy to look it up, but whoever said that the Vegas odds of them winning the NC dropping dramatically is not really on point.  My complete guess into the mechanisms of Vegas odds making is that the room for error when vying for a NC is very slim, thus the massive drop in the odds.  That does not really translate to what our own interests are, since I don't think anybody on this board reasonably expects us to compete for a NC this year.  Without checking, I'd suspect if you hunted down change in Vegas odds for them to win the Big Ten, it goes goes down, but not dramatically so.  I think that's the more relevant metric for us.  The kid might not bring them into the 4 team playoffs, but they could still have a solid shot to be atop the Big Ten East.  And even if they aren't, it's still entirely possible that the kid is looking pretty solid once The Game happens--he'll have an entire season to develop.

Obviously they would MUCH rather have a healthy Miller than the new kid coming in to start the squad.  I'm not denying that there will be some sort of drop off.  But depending on the talent and coaching, it's possible that the team will not turn into a total dumpster fire just because Miller is no longer playing.

Also, has a slow release which probably is related to trying to be mistake free. I would have preferred to play him early in the season. He will get better but is no BM.

I'm no expert, but he seems "serviceable" at best against a very vanilla defense in these clips. The throws he makes are to players who are fairly open, and the successful runs were mostly an outcome of the system rather than individual talent.

I'm sure he'll be fine by the middle of the season, but he doesn't look like a guy who's going to keep the DCs up late at night.

Of course, this is Spring footage, and he was playing in an offense set up for a QB with a different skillset and different measurables. Urban will adapt, and OSU will be fine, but this definitely hurts them in my mind.

He isn't close to as scary as BM and they are one hit away from Cardale taking over.....muwahahahahaha...I expect to see Cardale by the third game as JT hasn't played a meaningful snap in a couple years and hasn't ever been hit by a college football player which we know Urbz likes to throw his QBs out there like it ain't no thang.

They will still be favored to beat us.  Anyone that thinks this kid can't lead OSU to an unbeaten record they are crazy.  He is a very, very good athlete and once he gets his passing confidence to a certain point he will be pretty difficult to defend.
