Scout rankings updated and expanded

Submitted by Blue_in_Cleveland on

First top 100 (actually top 300 if you load the other pages) was released by Scout, with a lot of other updated and expanded rankings. There are currently 33 5*s, and the 4*s extend out to the 250th ranked player (meaning currently players ranked 251-300 are 3*s).

There are several interesting rankings/listings, but here are some players of interest and a few observations/comments.

Braden #40 OT, 3*

Stacey #33 OG, 3*

Kiel #1 QB, 5*, 17th overall

Pike #3 QB, 5*, 25th overall - slight UM lean maybe? hopefully?

Fuller #9 QB, 4*, 163rd overall - I guess somebody likes him as a QB

Garmon #11 RB, 65th overall - he is listed as the RB most likely to commit to Mich over on Touch the Banner.com (is that Magnus's site right?)

Burbridge #11 WR, 84th overall - I had once heard he was a MSU lean, is that still presumed true?

Stanford #16 WR, 106th overall

Thompson  #5 TE, 4*, 137th overall (Yeah Ron! If you look at my previous posts, I had him on my wish list even when he was getting no recruiting hype, so you can imagine how happy I am to see him get this ranking. Go Blue Ron!)  - strong Mich lean

Funchess #6 TE, 146 overall - maybe a Mich lean?

McNamara #7 TE, 165 overall - presumed OSU lean, from SD area

Peat #2 OT, 5*, 3rd overall - would be a huge get - both literally and figuratively

Murphy #8 OT, 34th overall

Diamond #9 OT, 4*, 40th overall - presumed Mich lean

Simmons #2 OG, 5*, 30th overall - his mentor is a former Mich OL, story is on front of Michigan's Rivals page, but I'm not an insider

Wormley #13 DE, 4*, 112th overall - Mich lean

Shittu #7 DT, 50th overall

Day #9 DT, 4*, 64th overall - grew up Mich fan right? presumed Mich lean

O'Brien #14 DT, 4*, 131st overall - I actually expected him to be higher than Day, but I guess we stand a better shot at Day any way right? Personally, I would be quite happy if we could get both of them - still a Tenn lean though?

Ross #2 MLB, 4*, 72nd overall - would love to get several of these LBs

Ringer #8 MLB, 4*, 206th overall - April 15th-ish, is that the date we hopefully ring in Ringer (it's late, I'm allowed bad puns)

Odenigbo #2 OLB, 58th overall - I didn't realize he was this highly regarded, although he has already been selected to the Under Armour All American game for next year

RJS  #7 OLB, 4*, 105th overall

Darby #2 CB, 40th overall - some sources list him as RB

Richardson #8 CB, 4*, 139th overall

Reeves #10 CB, 177th overall

Stefon Diggs is listed as #2 at SAFETY! 5*, I had never heard of him being projected as a safety before (actually I about soiled myself when I didn't see him listed in the section on WRs interested in us) - 16th overall

Wilson #10 S, 4*, 151st overall - probably the safety we have best shot at?

Interestingly, Brionte Dunn is a 5* while Warren Ball is a 4*. These are both RBs committed to OSU and we are trying to steal Dunn because i think Ball was OSU's first choice (definitely committed first and I think was offered first). Perhaps still a long shot, but how awesome would it be to steal a 5* from OSU. Remember, Dunn committed b/f the issues with Tressel were made known, so maybe he will reconsider a little. Anyone with more info on the topic please feel free to clarify where we stand with Dunn. Both are top 100 overall.

OSU is actually doing well with 2 5*s already and looking good with at least 1 more (DE Adolphus Washington). It will be interesting to see how the situation with Tressel affects recruiting. All currently committed recruits committed before the story broke.

***EDITED*** Wormley has been updated to a Michigan lean as several posters below mention that OSU may not be as strong of a threat as I had feared.

I could see OSU "letting" Dunn go if it means they pick up Rushel Shell. That kid is some kind of obsessed with Pryor. I think OSU can (and, if Dunn decommits, ultimately will) pull him from Pitt even though he goes to Tony Dorsett's alma mater.

As for the rest of the list: I don't see Peat going anywhere in the Big Ten that isn't Nebraska. Diggs will probably end up down south somewhere (unless Pike commits to M and pulls some magic, but if he's got that kind of magic, I'd rather see Green-Beckham than Diggs personally). I think Michigan has an outside shot at Noah Spence (#6 overall, #1 DE) because of Mattison, but at this point if he goes anywhere other than Penn State I'll be mildly surprised.

I honestly think we stand next to zero chance at both Diggs and Green-Beckham, even with Countess' connection to Diggs. I'd be surprised if Diggs goes somewhere that isn't in the south, and Green-Beckham will probably end up at Oklahoma or in the SEC. But I'm basing my hope on Pike's comments from Webb's interview where he said he's been talking a bit with Green-Beckham, and my own personal hope that, with all of our top outside WRs graduating after this year, someone with the mind-boggling attributes of a Green-Beckham would don the maize and blue.

Although, even thinking that any of these top players will come to Michigan is probably setting myself up for major disappointments come Signing Day. *sigh*

Diggs will be on campus for the spring game. I'm no optimist, but I consider us to have at least a slight shot with anyone willing to travel here from Maryland on an unofficial. Combined with Countess and Wes Brown, even teammate Ryan Watson, I think you're underestimating our shot with Diggs

I remember reading somewhere on here that Zeke Pike said that he's been talking with Green-Beckham and said that he was trying to make a visit up here. It's still a very long shot, but if we get him on campus I think we have a chance.

P.S. Anyone who makes a Lloyd Christmas reference is going to get a swift kick to the balls.

I am confused as to why Michigan hasn't offered Rushel Shell yet?  He's from Aliquiappa, Pa where Michgian great Ty Law is from.  But he goes to Hopewell High Tony Dorsett's alma mater.  I have watched that kid since he was a freshman and he would be amazing in Michigans new offense.  They've offered Garmon, and Drew Harris who are good backs but IMO Shell is one of the top 3 backs in the country. I would hate to see him end up a buckeye.

No idea why we wouldn't at least toss an offer his way. However, his recruitment has all the makings of an OSU-Pitt battle, and I'd put our chances of getting him at roughly 0%, so I think the staff would be better served looking elsewhere for a RB this year.

Yeah i agree we don't have a good shot with him.  He looks up to Pryor big time being from Western PA.  But he would fit perfect in our new offense and it wouldn't hurt to just see what kind of interest there is. I think Penn State still has a chance of grabbing him, and they are also in the driver seat with Noah Spence too!

Yes, Touch the Banner is my site.  I do have Garmon high up on the RB list, but I don't think any running back commitments are pending right now.  Somebody's got to be tops on the list, though, I guess...  He did make some nice comments about Michigan, though.

FWIW, it doesn't surprise me at all that Day is higher than O'Brien.  Day is a going to be difficult to handle for offensive linemen, especially in pass rush situations.  He makes some guys look absolutely silly.

Thanks for compiling this information.

I'm going to use something called logic right here.

1) Wormley has made it known that he is really only considering UM and OSU.

2) OSU is likely to land at least 2 studs between Washington, Odenigbo, Pittman (who we have a chance for as well).

3) OSU is having an image problem.  It's called confidentiality.

4) UM's D-Coordinator coached the Baltimore Ravens and their HC was a D-Line coach.

5) Wormley is from Toledo and most of his family (and girlfriend) are Michigan fans.

Add these up... and you get Wormley with wings.  Not a gut feeling.  Just putting the facts together.

I just found an article about Crespi CA OG Jordan Simmons and it doesn't sound like he'll travel too far from California.

Is location going to be a factor in his decision?

"I have thought about going away for school," Simmons said. "I have an offer from Florida and that would be really far away from home, so yeah, I have thought about going to school away from home."

What is Simmons looking for in a college?

"A great education, which I am getting at Crespi," Simmons said. "I want major in design and do my shoe design for NIKE.

"After that I want great coaching, great camaraderie, and a great fan base," Simmons said. "Overall just a good school."

The article can be found here..... http://www.crespi.org/newsdetail.asp?NID=864

but to me it sounded like..... "I want to work for Nike and what better place to do that then for the Oregon Ducks".....the team funded by Nike and in a town just up the road from the Nike world headquarters.... He didn't say it, but I bet you he is thinking that.....

for the word 'Michigan' reveals 37 hits for us.  People are bemoaning the fact that we've thrown out so many offers, but I just don't see the need to worry.  We've offered over 33% from the top 100 and it isn't even summer yet....

edit. 27 targets w/in the 101-200, bringing a total of 64 out of 200...which still keeps us around a 32%....

Love the star ratings even though we all know it's just a measure of potential, and mainly "measurable" potential.  Intangibles often make the difference over time.  But now we have even more data to kick around, and I am licking my chops over what the next 6 mos holds.  I was stoked to see Thompson and Funchess so high in the TE list..did not realize although the film I watched on them from the Michigan camp a few weeks ago was sweet.  Wonder if either will make it up to 5-star status.  Can't stand the thought of Peat at NE.  That guy is going to absolutely dominate.   Pike may be the key to the class b/c he sounds like he wants to try to be very active in recruiting big names to whatever school he chooses, and would I bet be able to reel in at least several 5-stars to go along w/  him once he decides.  It would be fun to watch that unfold if it was U-M.

Falling into the trap of arrogance and saying "we don't offer a scholarship to the University of Michigan to just anyone" is a great way to have deficient classes in this era. Kids don't "know" the "value of a Michigan scholarship," and it is one of the last things on most of their minds when picking a school.

The ones that can go anywhere they want might say academics are important to them, but for every Stefan Humphries there are probably 100 who go through with nebulous "majors" and wouldn't bother with classes if the coaching staff didn't get on their butts.  They want to go where they think they will prepare themselves for the NFL and win National Championships.  Of course, they want to do this on teams where they can play as freshmen.

Now that recruits can benefit from the same information era that fans do, just saying "we're Michigan and we have tradition" isn't enough anymore.

I remember hearing something awhile ago about this kid when we offered and he sounded pretty excited at that time and I have heard he will be one of the fastest kids coming out of H.S. this year. He mentioned that he was going to try to come up for a vist at some time. Does anyone have any info on him?

I listen to Sam Webb on 1050 whenever reception allows, and when he talks about Wormley he says M and TSIO.  His mom is clearly a M fan and Sam talks about that, but he hasn't been indicating a M lean recently.  Maybe it's not intended, maybe I'm hearing wrong, but he keeps saying Wormley is down to M and OSU, without saying M is the clear leader.

Sorry if I scared anyone, I do not have any special info on Wormley's leanings. I was basing my statement on the fact that he seemed more like a Michigan lock in the past and only more recently have I heard of us having to beat out OSU for his services. Several of the comments in this forum have helped to reassure me about Wormley though.

I have edited the OP accordingly.

Care to elaborate on that?  Are you being cryptic on purpose?  I understand that you're not supposed to report premium info on here but either report it or don't or tell us a little bird told you but don't leave me guessing on what your post might or might not mean.

I feel like I went up for a jump shot without knowing if I wanted to shoot or pass the ball.

Now I think I'll just throw it out of bounds.

I think we've heard most of this before:

- OSU fans generally think he's UM bound

- Chris grew up a UM fan.  Mom is a UM fan.

- The whole family is really feeling the "love" from OSU

- Best friends with OSU's Kenny Hayes... could play a role

- 2 horse race.  Will be "interesting".  No 3rd horse.

...not a good time for Osu to be giving out sexual favors to players... let alone family members. Maybe they missed the memo, "ya'll b fuckin up down der n Ohio" right Mr pryor?

Matt Godin is listed as a 3-star, #38 DE.  For comparison, the last DE in the Scout 300 is listed at 297 and is the #35 DE.  So Godin is just outside of the top 300 at this point.

Landing Ron Thompson and AJ Williams wouldn't be too bad either.  Getting the #5 and #14 TEs in the country.  Also consider how well those 2 complement each other.  Ron as the pass catching threat (with Barnett) and AJ as the primary blocker.  Seems like a perfect combo.

Mario Ojemudia from Harrison HS is listed as a DT.  He is 6'3", 215 lbs.  Is this a typo or is he somehow projected to play DT in college?

I'm surprised Wormley is so low. Rivals has him as the #3 overall prospect in Ohio, which will probably make him a top 30 player overall this year.
