Scout posters: Josh Furman injured in playoff game

Submitted by Don on

I just noticed a thread over on Scout that Josh Furman was injured in a playoff game, and some are calling the injury "serious." Somebody referred to an ankle while others were calling it a knee injury. Anybody know anything more definitive? Tom?

And: Goddammit.

No commentary on how serious.

"Old Mill's Josh Furman went down with a knee injury on Old Mill's first possession in the game and after returning for one play in the second quarter did not come back again."

Washington Post says left knee.

"After touted recruit Josh Furman went down with a left knee injury on the game's opening drive..."

I'm not a doctor either, but unlike shoulders and elbows, I dont think knees generally dislocate and then pop back into place (though kneecaps can). What you're describing sounds like the feeling you get from torn meniscus (cartilage) in your knee. The torn meniscus will flip over or slide out of place making it difficult to put weight on it or straighten it, then often slide back into place and feel normal, giving the feeling you're referring to.

This may or may not be what hampered Furman. If it is, then it can usually be fixed with arthroscopic surgery that simply cleans out the torn cartilage. The recovery time for that is about a month, but often less. On the other hand, he may have torn his MCL, but I am unsure about the recovery time for that as compared to an ACL.

This happened to me my senior year wrestling season. Every practice, nearly every match this would happen to me. never really told anybody until it randomly popped out in study hall and couldn't walk. Turned out i had a partially torn ACL and torn meniscus. It's definitely scary the first time.

Also not a doctor, but since I've had both injuries at issue, I can assure you that the knee joint can dislocate and pop back in. For me, it was more like the lower leg popping out of joint (not the kneecap, which i believe is a much more serious injury). I went down grabbed at my leg and shoved it back into place. Hurt like hell and was swollen for a couple weeks, but within about 4-6 months, without any real rehab, i was back to 100%.

Lets just wait until an actual Dr. does diagnose it. Speculation about another person's body wont really get you anywhere. He could have done pretty much anything to his knee but until it is confirmed we're just comparing how our bodies responded to some injury not his. We recruit despite injury anyway, lets just hope he picks M because our doctors and sports medicine group will be able to get him going.

I strained the MCL in my right knee ("pop"), after my motorcycle took a "dirt nap", last summer. It felt pretty bad for a few days but healed quickly (2 months) after some physical therapy. If that's what Josh's injury is, he should be just fine.

If Ohio State were going to sign Furman, they'd probably try to negotiate less money due to his injury history.

"Sorry, Josh. We can't give you that much...

...No, no Corvettes, either...

...I know we gave Pryor a 'Vette, but he didn't have a knee injury...

...Michigan offered you a Fuck Lion? I'll see what I can do."
