Scoreboard transcription fail

Submitted by MBAgoblue on
The new scoreboard is amazing, particularly if your seats are in the eandzone as mine were. However, they need to add a "Ball On" to the graphics for those in the end zones. Hilarious fail on the automatic transcription software for the announcer-to-text. It was amusingly, horribly inexplicably bad. Carl Grapentine's announcements ended up garbled into some sort of pidgin esperanto/Swahili/Klingon mix. "Denard Robinson up the middle for a Michigan first down" came up as A!den1son reffens maxsing for Menigens first down" and the like. Turn it off or fix it, please.

I would like to talk about the Fandom Endurance Games, as mentioned in your signature.

Can someone give a rundown of those games.

I don't think this has ever been considered one, but if you are going to count road games, @ND in 2008 has got to be one.

We basically had the same weather as they had yesterday, minus the lightning and delays. My phone got so wet in my pocket that is never turned on again. All while Michigan was fumbling kickoff after kickoff on our way to a rout.

So what are all the FE Games?

Which is #1,2,3 4, etc?

Yes, I also have a badge from that game.

But I think that the numbering may be all off.

The '08 ND game was before the NW game, so if we count that one does it change the number?

What were FE 1 and FE 2?

We need to establish set guidelines here.

I attended 2000 PSU but have no recollection of the weather.  Was it really that bad?

1995 Purdue is definitely on the list.  Torrential rain turning to sleet by the third quarter.  That's definitely the worst I've ever experienced.

1992 Illinois was the snowiest game I've attended.  Neither team could hang onto the ball.

1998 Syracuse was brutally hot, and the play on the field didn't make it any more tolerable.

It's interesting they use the recognition software.  A lot of big league stadiums use captioning services that actually have live human beings listening to the audio feed, typing it as it goes along.  A lot of times, they're not even at the stadium.   Seems like a far better (and reliable) option to me.

I don't think that was a recognition software problem.  When recognition software screws up, it at least still has real words, but the wrong ones.  "Robinson with the carry; gain of five" would come out as something like "Robin zone with caries.  Gainer flies".  Instead, it was showing words that were not in a dictionary--"Robinson wh c00 gggg5ggg."

the blue hairs around me thought it was a non-english speaker attempting to transcribe.

anyway, seems stupid to use transcription software that works that poorly, and i'm surprised they hadn't tested it better beforehand. i'm sure i'm one of several hundred students that is able and would be happy to transcribe in real time.

Don't get me wrong, I loved the quality, size, even just the physical presence, but yes, there are glaring omissions in content that Dave Brandon already even addressed - post game on the radio show. I didn't hear anything specific to 'ball on' even though sitting in the end zone away from my normal sideline season tix, it was a pain in the ass doing visual spot checks on ball placement. But...he did address software issues and bugs that need to be worked out and will. I am convinced we will never see the in game stats, I.e. Rush, pass & total yards were accustomed to seeing, but rather quick and often snapshots between plays & after big gains.

constant updates on other games?  The very bottom of the screen that mostly said "Michigan Football" of just "Michigan" most of the day should run a constant "ticker" style of top 25 games and B1G team scores.

It seems Michigan has always been reluctant to give more than a couple of other game updates during the course of the game.  Sure the Slippery Rock score is entertaining, but knowing the ND score or the delay would have been nice as well as other 3:30 starts more than once during the game.

Other than that and I also miss the running total of team stats always available to view.  It's a good benchmark for how the offense and defense are doing against the opponent.
