Schofield is versatile and in the NFL, especially Denver, coming out of college with the ability and experience to play both G and RT is a huge factor in him going this early. Given the injuries Denver OL seems to have he will play early here. Even without my homer Michigan glasses I think this is a good fit.

2001 was the last time UMich had two O-linemen drafted in the first three rounds. It was also the last time they had two O-linemen *drafted*.

If Lewan lasted until the late rounds and Schofield didn't get drafted at all, we'd be unanimous in our conclusion that our OL coaching was horrible. Funk would get the blame squarely.

If the OL coach would get the blame for a poor draft result, how is it that he still deserves blame after a good draft result?

"... we'd be unanimous in our conclusion that our OL coaching was horrible."

Maybe, given that Lewan was on a pretty favorable trajectory before Hoke et al. arrived ...

More likely, though, at least some people would say "What do you expect? The upperclassmen weren't all that talented and the younger guys haven't hit their stride yet."

His first two years—one of which was a redshirt—were under Frey, and his last three years were under Funk. He ended up an All-American and eleventh overall pick. The notion that his success was entirely the product of his own talent and Frey's coaching and that Funk had literally no positive impact is nonsensical, especially given the fact that his linemate was also drafted relatively highly. If Darrell Funk was such a craptastic OL coach, it's amazing that two guys who spent a combined six years under his tutelage were deemed good enough by the NFL to spend high draft choices on.

I've been openly skeptical that our OL coaching was up to snuff given our offensive struggles, but IMHO these draft results lend more credence to the belief that the problems were in fact largely due to the OC.

they look fat, but in the bad way, especially bosch. Ltt and fox too

The EPIC fail was not relying on magnuson or braden at RT last year. The line shouldve been Lewan Kalis Glasgow Schofield Magnuson/Braden. This would have provided a ton of interior experience. And after all, if mags was as good as touted, then hed have learned. Their argument was that its worse to have no exp at RT than the inherent shitshow we saw
But i wouldnt worry with nussmeier.and i expect to see players like ltt and kugler start to surface. And Cole is a starter. Wait and see.

The older you posters get the more articulate you become at whining. Quit bitching about the offensive line and coaches.

Congrats Michael Schofield.

Schofield's thread is almost twice as big as Lewan's...

You all can tell me, just questions:

Do any of you think this is because people were tired of Lewan? Do you think it is because people started to not like Lewan other than the fact he was a Michigan guy? Is it because we just appreciate Schofield more?

...or is it just Lewan was on a weekday and people had to work the next day, Schofield was on a Friday night/Saturday morning?

Just wondering what the board thinks...

That's a fair question.  For me personally it's some of both.  Lewan is obviously a great player but manged to make himself an increasingly unappealing character.  Then again football isn't necessarily a haven for choirboy types.  It takes all kinds.

On to 2014.

I don't really think you can think bad of Lewan after all he did for Michigan. I think it's because we all expected Lewan to go high and when Schofield got picked up in the third we were all surprised about how early he went. I for one am proud for both young men.

I think the longer thread for Schofield has more to do with the fact that everyone knew Lewan was going in the first half of the first round. Schofield was predicted to go anywhere from the late second round to the fifth round.
