Is that after he completes his run as Miami coach from the agreement he reached yesterday?
Schefter: harbaugh to 49ers
Espn is reporting 5 years 25 million
listing ESPN as the source
John Elway is an idiot.
They also reported he was singing with the Dolphins with a deal in place. Until it's official, I'm not falling for it.
Wait, didn't we offer him more than 5 million? WTF Harbaugh. I really hope he's finally excommunicated from Michigan after this for spurning us in a time of need.
Screw him. I almost always root for Michigan grads to succeed, but ill make an exception here.
I've been consistently anti Harbaugh despite a vast majority wanting the so called prodigal son to return. Brings to mind an old saying: fool me once shame on you fool me twice shame on me. Fool me once was when JH threw the program and university under the bus over academics. Fool me twice you've probably figured out despite JH proclaiming to bleed Maize and Blue.
The big donors and down in front crowd got what they wanted- RR gone. I hope they are prepared for what's next- Shame on you! Karma's a bitch and I hope we, the average fan, don't suffer for the arrogance of the big shots who thought RR just wasn't one of us- a Michigan Man. Yost and Bo weren't Michigan Men when they came here either.
Why?! Because he wants to test his skills at the highest level the sport has to offer? Grow up. He's a titan in his industry these days and making a professional choice about his career. Don't be a dick simply because he didn't choose the job that you wanted.
I didn't want him here to begin with and have stated that he wasn't coming so how am I being a dick. A titan in the industry-seriously? He's done nothing long term and you don't become a titan in the industry overnight unless say you invented the forward pass or did something to revolutionize your chosen field. He's a freakin football coach that hasn't even won a conference title!
he can't coach the 49ers and still sing with the Dolphins.
If my situation if life were such that I had an opportunity to actually DO something about our 7 game skid against OSU, as an alum I would not hesitate. But, you know, other people may have different ideas about things like the eternal battle between good and evil and the future of Western Civilization.
"Never takes sides against the family again."
Can we at least put the SCHEFTER KNOWS ALL crap to rest now? didn't he say yesterday that the 49ers were off the table? Didn't he say before the bowl game that JH was coming here?
I am now at liberty to inform all mgoblog patrons that Jon Gruden will be the next head football coach at the Universiy of Michigan.
I'd take it I guess. Not sure if it wouldn't be an RR situation all over again though in regards to the alums/donors giving full support
Is it because he bought the house? We have heard already. But if you have new information please share.
Well poop. Bring on Gruden!!!
you know what they say about great minds...
...they think alike?
Gruden on a recruiting trip.
"you know I once had two teams in the same super bowl.".
Who wouldn't buy into that?
Especially if he can get some quality assistants. This point is huge, imo
I'm not sure if any of this Gruden love is serious, but if it is, aren't you worried he would just bolt for the NFL after a few years?
I won't be mad at him if he returns us to prominence, wins a MNC, bolts, and then his successor wins a MNC with his players a la Saban
Why does anyone want Gruden? I don't get it. He has never coached in college.
So? He has coached in the League, won the SB, is a great character guy that many people like. He would also be a great recruiter. Plus, I haven't heard anything bad about the guy, so he wouldn't be bringing any baggage (I may be mistaken). Gruden has also supposedly studied the spread option offense the last few years. Not to mention he is decently young, IMO.
Based on what you said, I'm all in for Chuky.
Sorry, Chuky? I don't know who that is, if I should know I apologize. It's been a rough few days obviously.
Is Gruden's nick name. He sort of resembles the chucky doll from the horror movies when he scowls.
Gruden does seem to have a unique mixture of football accomplishment, ego, X's and O's, and name recognition that seem like a good fit for the Michigan brand/culture.
The only hang-up for fans (or at least those on this blog) seem to be his lack of college experience. I don't think we'd ever get a candidate with an absolutely perfect resume - do his pros outweigh his cons? I think he's got to be top 3 at this point.
is mentioned for every coaching job that comes up and quite frankly, thinking he will take this job is kind of embarrassing. How arrogant are we>?
Arrogant enough to spend 300 comments on every thread explaining why nobody is good enough to coach at Michigan.
It's a coaching search. There's debate and speculation and rumors. It's what happens.
...NFL coaches can fail in the NCAA ranks. I don't see Gruden being able to lead/guide 18-22 year olds. Can he manage men? Yes. NCAA and NFL are two entirely different beasts.
This is also why I don't see JH doing well in the NFL. His high-intensity, body-blocking during the pre-game the other night might get young men amped up, but I'm not so sure it will motivate a group of highly paid professionals and the "diva" receivers.
The man spent 15 years in the NFL, I think he might know a thing or two about what makes professional players tick.
I am a huge Gruden fan. Probably one of my favorite coaches in any sport. I read a couple of his books and he mentioned in "All it Takes Is All Ya Got" is how he grew up around ND football and how he was so excited every time they would play Michigan at Michigan. Even referred to coaching at UM as a "dream job." He would be a great hire and great fit. He understands the Michigan traditions and rivalries. Plus the man can coach. He does have a SB ring. I believe, imo, he would also adapt to our personnel and keep Denard at qb.
Thats what I used to think too, but I dont think it can really be that different. My biggest issue was recruiting, but seeing as how Weiss got some really good classes I dont think it would be too big of an issue.
Right now, for me, its Gruden, Patterson, or bust.
Shouldn't Weis' experience tell you that the biggest concern isn't recruiting, but actual coaching? The NFL is a different world. You have to coach in a different way in college. You're not working with professionals, you're working with guys who may not have had a whole lot of great coaching before getting to college, you're working with time constraints, you need to game-prep your first string while also giving enough time to your young players to prepare for the future. It's just not the same thing. Can it work? Yes, but there's certainly no guarantee, and history leads me to think that it's unlikely.
Weis was never a head coach in the NFL. Theres a big difference between being a coordinater and a HC.
I dont see how you could compaire Weis's NFL experience to Grudens.
Gruden has been an actual head coach (and a very succesful one at two stops in the NFL). Weis had never been anything but an offensive X's and O's assistant. I also think Gruden would inspire more attentiveness and confidence in his players than a man who put the South Bend Golden Corral out of business.
I think it's a bigger deal to understand coaching in college vs. pro than to have head coaching experience. If being a head coach in college or pros so easily translated to the other, there would be far more success stories going one direction or the other.
Weis was an offensive coordinator for a defensive minded coach. It's pretty fair to say he essentially ran one half of the team for several super bowl winners. Coordinators transition into successful head coaches all the time.
With Weis, the problems only started when he lost his veteran corp. It was like he had never thought about what type of preparation was needed to turn those guys into veterans. The same problem might not apply to Gruden, but to me it was a problem for Weis, not because he didn't have head coaching experience, but because he was coming from the NFL.
The reason there aren't more success stories is because there aren't many (if any) proven NFL head coaches who take college jobs. Someone like Wannstadt never won in the NFL. Pete Carroll did okay but never really won big (and he did alright in college). Who else has made that move? Dan Devine?
I don't think the lack of guys doing it reflects on the difficulty of doing it, but rather the fact that top coaches don't leave the pros for a college team.
won't allow Patterson. He's not one of us and his tirade during the Rose Bowl about getting a concussed player who hadn't been given clearance back into the game should eliminate him 100%. Not to mention DB wants somebody with Midwest recruiting ties. Does DB realize that you can win NCs with primarily Florida, Texas, or California talent? You would need to get every major Midwestern talent just to have a chance and that is highly unlikely.
I don't get it either. Pro coaches and athletes <> college. The jobs are very different. Recruiting\evaluating and motivation are just not the same.
Weis was not a HC before coming to ND either, IIRC. But he was a hell of a recruiter, just couldn't get everything together.
Gruden started in the college ranks. Grad Assistant at Tennessee, QB Coach at Southeast Missouri St (powerhouse...!), TE Coach at University of the Pacific, and finally WR coach at Pitt before he was hired by Holmgren.
Plus, the dude is about as awesome as awesome gets.
Just curious - mostly because I am too lazy to look it up - did Pete Caroll coach at the college ranks prior to USC? And, if so, how does his experience compare to Gruden's?
He was a University of Pacific with our good friend GERG. Also Wikipedia also shows Arkansas, Iowa State and NC State.
He's intense, a motivator and a winner.....what more could you ask for?
He would have us ready to run through a wall after his 1st press conference....Go Blue!
Ive run through a wall just thinking about him being a coach.
"Appreciate the gusto, but try the door next time."
Huge difference. That house has been purchased, son.
You gotta believe to achieve. It is that or shopping for a Hokeamania t-shirt. Which would you rather be doing right now?
Yeah and there was also nonsense about JH signing with Miami yesterday. Look how that ended.
How do you know there is a 0% chance? Link please. I am not trying to sound like an asshat but still it is possible. It's either think about a real coach coming here or Hoke, I would much rather think about Gruden and then worry about it when it is Hoke that is our coach.
I get ya. I just think he is one guy that is worth looking at. It can't hurt, especially not now. I just think that he could bring more to the table than some of the other guys out there that everyone is speculating on. He seems to have the fire and personality of someone that would be a good HC and his prior HC experience doesn't hurt, I know it was in the NFL but that counts for something, IMO.
...the 49ers called a press conference for this afternoon. A little more concrete this time. Ratfuck!
I'm gonna go smash my testicles with a boat anchor, just to feel better.
The pipe dream ends...
Exactly! What sibling doesn't want to compete with another at the top of the football chain. The NFL is the highest level. I don't fault Jim one bit.
Though i may be alittle biased as i am a 49ers fan.
Can this be over already!
it never really began.
...but in my heart it was oh so real
WE'RE ALL DOOMED!!!!
Effffffffffffff. I hate the effing 49ers. Pro football is the suck. And Harbaugh? E tu, Harbaugh?
I want to +1 you right now... sigh...
Since when is "coach" spanish for coach?
This must have been a recent thing... perhaps it's because they're talking about futbol americano? I mean, even "home runs" is written as "jonrones"
Used in American sports a lot, and actually used by American Spanish speakers a lot in general.
"coach" is a lot more twitter-friendly than director tecnico.
I can't view this photo at work but, based on what I know of you, I'm in blind agreement.
Just a .gif of that reality person launching a watermelon using a large sling shot, only to have it backfire and hit her in the face. That's just how I feel right now.
How do you post pictures? I keep failing.
You can copy the picture and paste it right into the text box. Or you can right click the image, "copy image location" then click the portrait icon (last icon in the text box on the far right.) and paste the URL.
Got it, I guess I worded my query wrong in the search function. I just searched again and the first one that popped up gave me the answer. Thanks for your help though.
That's the fist I've heard out of Schefter this entire time. I'm surprised.
Well sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet! That sux!
Who wants to get a beer or five?
Im gonna need a keg of High-Life to get through the next few days
I hope that tweet is true! Not because I don't like Harbough but rather I am tired of hearing about him turning down every job and giving us M fans hope. JH needs to say yes somewhere so we can put a fork in him and move on!
in front of a camera.
You'll have a chance then because he also said the niners have called a press conference this afternoon to introduce him...
49ers announced a press conference for this afternoon to announce it, according to Adam as well.
Schefter: Harbaugh to ___________
Come on down, Mr. Patterson.
Who's going to step up??
Press conference this afternoon... on to next candidate...
it's a post. There is no link, no opinion, no nothing. At least give us a few sentences about the topic. I know it's news, but you need to put some thought into starting a new thread on this site. Ya dig?
And if I didn't have to use my iphone to start a thread, believe me I would. You work with what you've got available to you...
I guess I missed the "posted from iphone" part on the topic...
good luck with your next level of challenges. Once in a lifetime opportunity has been lost for you and the rest of us.
Seriously. DB. Go call Patterson. Now.
Not that I don't desparately want JH. But, enough of the drama. He is a great coach. There are other very good coaches out there who will not bolt for the NFL in 3-5 years.
Personally (I know that Brian will puke), I am pulling for Hoke. He wants the job above all others. It would be his dream job. To me, that counts for a lot, as his love of Michigan might prove infectious.
Hoke is not my favorite at all, but honestly, I would be OK with him just for the reason you stated. That much desire for the job would go a long way in movitating the players and the fan base.
If nothing else, this gives DB the ammunition to say "look, we tried*, he went somewhere else, we have to focus our efforts on finding the next great coach of Michigan who isn't JH." He also prepared us for this at the press conference.
It's all good - I hope we can help Patterson across that bridge he was talking about.
*assuming he tried
The goddamn plane has crashed into the mountain. We're not so good at hiring coaches, or so it appears.
Are you fucking crazy? The guy in seat 17, row 68 probably wants the job pretty badly, too. He's a fat fucking slob that never went to Michigan and was only able to score season tickets because of the defection of the blue hairs during the RR era, but, hey, his love of Michigan might prove infectious. Why don't we hire him? Who gives a shit about his ability to recruit or his ability to coach? He L-O-V-E-S Michigan! I once saw him swear off beer for a whole year on the condition that Michigan come from behind and beat Wisconsin in the 500th game at the Big House in 2008. And guess what? Michigan came back and won! I mean, is this guy perfect or what? He could just swear off different things each game (hot dogs, internet porn, corn dogs, pay-per-view porn, etc.) and Michigan would never lose!
Stay Classy MGO!!
. . . and I like it.
While we're in the blame game, I say let's kill the messenger. Schefter is a tool.
I am a loudmouth.... but I wasn't clamoring for JH.
I don't blame him for not landing JH, I blame him for having to wait until Jan. 7th to hear that news.
ANy more of these and i'm fixin to donkey punch someone
I figured it out. Harbaugh is really Santa Claus.
No wonder I didn't get that copy of Call of Duty: Black Ops that I asked for! Son of a B-tch!
And the press conference seals it. Dammit. Despite everything I still had some hope, but clearly should have just given up on Tuesday.
I will root for him, but I don't ever want to hear his name come up again should we need a head coach.
Why root for him now? He's clearly proven he was all about his own glory rather than becoming part of something greater than himself. I was rooting for him but he turned me against him in about 36 hours. There are tons of crap NFL jobs that come open every year. Michigan is probably (hopefully) a once in a lifetime opportunity for him, and he turned us down and embarrassed us in the process. If it was about his wife hating cold weather...I guess I could sympathize with that. It's probably for the best, since he would've dragged us through this every year or two until he fulfilled his NFL dream.
When Jim harbaugh is fired in three years because the 'niners still suck, then we'll all have our revenge!
(Except it is looking more and more like we're still going to be hurting three years from now as well ...)
He is dead to me.
John Harbaugh. GO CHEFS (great googly moogly)!
the John Harbaugh rumors were agent-driven for more cash.
hes only getting 5mil / yr. thats what really pisses me off about this
Which we (or probably Stanford could have paid). So he obviously just wants to be in the NFL. Which is almost better than being spurned for another NCAA program.
Cook those birds!
I don't know, the BELLHOPS are offering some tough competition to those CHEFS...
Damn. I sort of knew this was coming, but I still had hope.
That's just wrong...DAMN. LOL! Hysterical!
Shouldn't that be Kirk Ferentz?
At least it's over and the fanbase can move on to someone else.
Let's move on.
At least he didn't go back to Stanford - then he'd really be a jerk.
So much for bleeding Maize and Blue. He bleeds flaming san fran colors. Good luck with TRoy Smith as your QB. Thanks for the help.
Eh, better there than stanford. Prestige would have taken a bit of a hit if one of our "loyal" alums had elected to stay at an institution that can't fill a 50,000 seat stadium instead of coming back to his "dream" job. Don't think he is going to be a very good pro coach (his style is one that players tune out rather quickly - see Singeltary, MIchael) but w/e.
it was not about the money. It was about the location. Wife made the decision for him.
Ann Arbor too? Or am I mistaken?
but that is probably the one he had the messy divorce with ...
There's a pretty good argument to be made that the best coach available is only available because we just fired his ass.
I swear, we better get a kick ass coach out of this fiasco.
Acoording to sources, including TomVH, a lot of players lost faith in RR after the Gator Bowl. You can't possibly keep a coach if that happens.
but my argument remains.
Besides, I remember hear something once about the market value of a bird in the hand, especially when compared to the value of birds that have yet to be displaced from their current residences...
If you have a team who doesn't believe in their coach then we'd be right back to 3-9 or 2-10. What happens then?
My point was that the best available college football coach in America right now is probably Rich Rodriguez. So regardless of the circumstances or whether it was the 'right' decision, we just fired the best available college football coach without a back-up plan.*
(You'd also got a tough argument to convince me that Michigan would have finished no better than 3-9, though that number is certainly in play for next year)
*If Adam Schefter is right... which, like, whatever
I agree that RR is the best available coach. My opinion is that the way DB handled the situation there was no possible way that he could bring RR back for another year or give him an extension. Thinking retrospectively all signs pointed to him being fired.
I was also under the impression the DB was this crazy bad ass and that we would have a coach to introduce by now. I think I bought too much into the DB pimp hand thing and was duped into thinking it was all taken care of.
That's a completely unfounded feeling at this point in the process.
I actually saw an antique roadshow with that. Some lady came in with some bird in the hand she found in her attic. The guy appraised it at about two in the bush. She seemed really surprised.
I like the Niners, good for Jim. On to other candidates.
Gruden or Patterson plz
Should be fun to see the Carroll-Harbaugh rivalry renewed in the pros. It looks like Michigan was never a long term option for Harbaugh so at that point I'd rather see him in the NFL and end some of the speculation.
Hopefully we can also wrap up our own search now that the guy we pretty much had to wait for is off the board.
If true, he never wanted to come home. If so, screw him.
... he already thinks he's home.
He obviously wants to coach in the NFL, and this is a great chance in a town where his wife is comfortable and he doesn't have to move. This is his perogative. Good luck to him.
Now, if it had been Stanford, we would look bad.
75% Hoke, 25% Miles.
is a fantastic place to live & raise a family (moreso if you make good money). The guy was going to make more money that anyone needs to live comfortably forever regardless of where he went, and there are no garuantees with coaching jobs, so maybe he put his family first in this case. Can't hate the guy for that.
But can I hate the 49ers?
I would like to neg-bomb you right now. Sadly, I cannot.
What's the average tenure of a pro coach, anyway? 4 years would be my guess based on the fact that there are a dozen Mariuccis for every Belicheck out there. Hope for JH's sake he's a Belicheck, but I bet he'll come to rue his decision 4 or 5 years from now.
Or the way things now look, maybe we get him the next time around ...
Any chance Schefter is the new Herbie?
Unfortunately, Herbie is the new Herbie. He said he'd be "shocked" if Harbaugh didn't end up in Ann Arbor.
I really didn't want to have to hate our head coach with a burning passion. Anyone but Harbaugh.
By the way, he played Michigan like fools, used us (and other teams) as leverage to get more money and left us with our pants down. Looks like I had this guy pinned from day 1.
AHHHHH SEE YA SEEYA SEEYA
Sounds like Miami, Oakland, and Denver provided all the leverage needed. Schefter suggested Harbaugh turned down Miami's offer because it wasn't all about the money.
Sucks. No idea where this goes now.
shit fuck poop
Stop this "Screw Harbaugh" crap. He doesn't owe Michigan anything. God forbid he stay in SF because he doesn't want to uproot his family.
are you serious? He owes michigan everything.
He started for three years at QB, beat OSU, and took us to a Rose Bowl.
So yes, I am serious. He owes the university nothing.
pretty sure beating osu and going to the rose bowl was a team effort. he also wouldnt have had those opportunities without Michigan. I'm guessing by you're just trying to be poetic or something
What exactly does he owe Michigan? What entitlement do we have as an alumni community for him to be our coach?
I - for one - reject any sense of entitlement to a coach who played at our school 20+ years ago. I live by the credo that you have to do what is best for you and your family first, and - frankly - going to the NFL in the Bay Area would beat the hell out of returning to A2 and rebuilding a football program.
I am honestly shocked by the level of arrogance and sheer selfishness that many UM fans harbor. This coaching search has been disappointing, but we as a school are not "owed" anything.
Agreed. There are children amongst us.
Screw Harbaugh for numerous reasons.
(But you're right, family first and I can't fault his decision.)
Did he loose the one chance that he had of ever being a Michigan head coach or will the doors opening once again if he fails in the NFL?
I have to think he considered that in making the decision and became okay with not ever coaching at Michigan. If he didn't think about that angle, he's a bigger idiot than I make him out to be.
This I agree with. He had someday NFL aspirations, and his family does not seem to have been looking forward to Ann Arbor. Leave it be.
We are not in this pickle because of Jim Harbaugh ...
JH can lick my taint.....
"SF not an option", pff! Thanks for toying with our minds, Schefter.
It's not so bad that he's pushing 60, often the catholic church picks an old pope knowing they will die soon. Miles hasn't got a lot to lose coming to M... fix it he's a hero, wallow in mediocrity and he retires. Also, he acts the way he does because he's playing by SEC rules now..he has to do what he has to do to beat Saban who is doing the same things. He'll dial in to M and the Big10.... Good track record (much longer than Harbaugh's), excellent recruiting tool....BEST OPTION
you don't have to dick 18 year-olds over in the process. The oversigning is bad enough. Publicly screwing kids over and then lying about it is unethical.
But the stiff upper lip folks with the serious $$$ are a-skeered of Miles' "irregularities." Hell, it's Louisiana--they won't even notice you if you're not a little goofy.
sniff...snifff...what's that smell?
is it weird that I hope that he fails miserably there now? its sad that the guy wanted to go coach an NFL team for 5 years instead of restoring Michigan to glory and becoming the second coming of Bo. He could've been on an MGoBlog TShirt!
I wanted Harbaugh, even if he was going to be in for only a few years and then head to the NFL on the grounds I thought he'd be an excellent guy to get a system going. The kind of guy who would leave talented assistants behind, etc. I was fine with that. The idea of say his D-Coord stepping up in 4 years when Harbaugh goes to the NFL was not a horrible idea. Plus of course we'd have a coach in the NFL hopefully drafting our guys and making recruiting easier. We could have been a feeder team producing the kinds of players the Harbaughs wanted. That would mean lots of people taken on draft day and make recruiting easier.
Over the past week though it has become clear that if Harbaugh was going to coach here it would be because Stephen J. Ross had either filled his house full of money or put a gun to his head. Harbaugh wasn't going to be here because he loved Michigan and the thought of saving his alma mater. He'd have won, he's too competitive not to try his hardest and field winning teams, but he'd have no long term loyalty. No long term desire to leave a system behind. He'd have come in, gone through the motions of saving us, won a few bowls and then headed to the NFL without a second thought. He wouldn't have used his position has a NFL head coach to make recruiting easier or the like.
I'm all for going to TCU and making a lot of people on that staff very rich if they come to Michigan. As to Harbaugh I wish you the best and if it is ever proven you left Brandon at the altar I hope you get your ass kicked by the Colts in the Super Bowl and have to watch as Hart runs for 100 yards and 5 TDs.
I don't know if SF can ever reach the Super Bowl. The only thing they have going is that they are in a easy division.
I thought Mike Hart already did that
I can't take this anymore. I am so disappointed in DB right now and I don't know that he can totally redeem himself in my eyes.
This just sucks. I'm really sick and fucking tired of getting shit on as a UM fan. I can't wait to see my facebook page fill up with sparty friends taunting me about UM's mediocrity...the worst part is I can't say shit back without referencing glory days.
I know the worlds not over, but I am still pissed.
This isn't Brandon's fault -- Harbaugh obviously just wasn't interested in coming here.
And, as has been reported, some players had lost faith in RichRod after the bowl debacle. Brandon might have been considering keeping RR (as was my preference heading into the Gator Bowl), but after that, he had no choice.
He did what he felt he had to do: He fired RichRod and went hard after Harbaugh, and it didn't work out. He's obviously also vetting other candidates, with Fitzgerald the only known one so far.
Let's see what happens before we flip out. I'm holding out hope for Patterson, personally, but Mullen would also be fine. There are good coaches out there besides Harbaugh.
I just had to get that out of my system. I know there are other good coaches out there, but it remains to be seen if we get one. My biggest fear is we go conservative and hire a Brady Hoke because it's safe (which in my personal opinion is not safe at all, cause if he sucks it up we're going to be in a divided fanbase situation like the RR debacle).
Another part of the disappointment is a longtime UM lover like Harbaugh wouldn't even consider coming home at a once in a lifetime opportunity. That shows the program isn't quite what it used to be if someone like that tells us "Thanks, but no thanks"
I'm in a wait and see mode before completely losing it. Losing out on JH sucks tho
Harbaugh wasn't coming to Michigan if Jesus Christ himself was the AD.
So are you saying that if Bo (JC) wasn't still the AD, that he couldn't have pulled Harbaugh? I am not sure I believe that.
JH threw the football program that he played for and university he attended under the bus over academics. If Bo would have been alive when it happened he would have kicked JH's a**. Not to mention Bo wouldn't have fired a coach after three years.
Either way, all Harbaugh said was he and other players were steered into General Studies so he could focus on football, and he would have preferred to study History.
Since that appears to be true, and it is counter to what our program should aspire to be, I have no problem with it. Especially since he walked the talk at Stanford.
i.e., Jim did not sensationalize the truth, Ann Arbor News did.
Lets re-hire RR
Wish we could. Our 2 best options the next couple of years were 1) Harbaugh, 2) RR. Now they are both eliminated.
Rich Rodriguez proved he was not an option over a 37 game body of work. By far the worst three year period in school history and with zero evidence we were making progress in meaningful games. Get over it and move on.
David Brandon has this handled.
You have got to be one of the most negative people on here. People can talk about RR if they want, you get over it and move on. You're the bitter one.
facts! Shame on NateVolk.
There you go again with your misstatements of fact. Good thing you're not a lawyer (not that you'd want to be one) - a judge would hold you in contempt of court for making a sweeping statement like that.
Dude, Rodriguez is gone. Let it go. Let people complain to feel better and you can simply bask in your own glory that is no more Rodriguez. Here's hoping you never have to be shown that the decision to fire Rodriguez was a bad one.
He coached at UM, so he's a Michigan Man. Should unite the fan base.
Harbaugh goes 6-10 next year and then 3-13 the year after with the 49ers and gets sh-t-canned.
Either way, you go to the NFL to get fired. I don't know why coaches do it.
Its got to be all about ego. He had it so good at Stanford. The school has tons of money and already offered him a great contract. Palo Alto is one of the best places in America to live. He had his own system and own players in it. The prospects for next year were very bright. If anything, I think his best decision would be to stay. But the ego forces him to "go pro" rather than be happy where he is. You know, love the one you're with.
That's just jewelry. Coaching your alma mater at a time they most need you is noble. Coach Michigan, at any time, is motherfucking holy.
Dissed his alma mater again. First time, shame on him. Second time, shame on us.
Where are all the idiots who wanted Rich Rod to fail because they were sure this was Harbaugh's "dream job".
The Detroit Free Press
Personal glory, sibling rivalry, a wife who wants to live in California. Pick one. Have fun with the QB situation there, Jimmy. I'm praying they draft Mallett just for the sideline blowups alone.
I thought the choice was Harbaugh or RR? Now we have neither. Thanks DB!
i know it's over and oh it never really began but in my heart it was so real
Is that even how you spell it? I want a physical, smashmouth coach who won't take crap from anybody. Is that too much to ask?
at least DB called this one right. hopefully he will get our hire right
He's taking over a team that is in the bottom of the league. Haven't had a winning season since 2002 and they don't have any stability in the front office. He is a hard ass ( how well did that work out for Singletary) pro athletes don't respond to that attitude they revolt. I hope he foes well because he's from Michigan but I see him being fired by the end of his third year. The NFL will always be there Michigan won't.
He's also in a division where 7-9 makes the playoffs. The Rams and Cardinals run crappy organizations so it could just be Pete vs. Jim for the division title every year even assuming neither team makes a big leap forward.
Flight tracker showed a jet flying back to Willow Run from Palo Alto late this afternoon.
Time to put MGoBlog at Defcon 2 status. We are at imminent Hoke hiring.
I think I can already hear the bomb sirens going off now...
Fans need to stop the doom and gloom and wait a few goddamn days to see what happens. And then we may have to wait until September till we know if the new coach, whoever it is, is going to work in the immediate future. We aren't going to know if anyone is going to be successful until they have a few seasons under their belt, so I'm not sure why people are freaking out now.
"until they have a few seasons under their belt." Exactly the problem; why are we even in the position of needing to hire someone who needs multiple years to see if they will succeed. Isn't that what we were in the midst of showing?
On the other hand, I believe that the right person (and that's where Brandon is on the spot) could bring success much more quickly. That is, someone who can hold the team together, bring in a decent class this year, and use well the players at his disposal.
Will DB pull it off? I'm highly skeptical but willing to be proven wrong.
Personally I'd rather not wait, not because I'm impatient (even though I am) but because I'd rather our recruiting class was larger than 5 or so people.
That's the exact problem, we need someone almost everyone can align behind for those lean years so we can get out the other side or we ar Notre Dame ...
Quick, name who that person is ....
Miles or Patterson could, I believe. If the fans want to get pissed at a coach for the second time in three years before he even has a chance to step on campus, then so be it. They'll be throwing the whole program under the bus along with him. Does no one see that?
as long as it's not Hoke. DB will make the right hire. As long as it's not Hoke
Both would be tits hires
Gruden over Cowher any day.
If you're looking for a former NFLer, why not throw John Fox in the mix? He's a smash-mouth guy with a focus on defense and took the Panthers to the Super Bowl. That should appease a large amount of the Bo/Lloyd fanbase. He struggled of late but only because his real handicap is that his boss (Jerry Richardson) is a megalomaniac and the front office can't draft for sh-t. (No Michigan players on the roster . . . need I say more?)
Let's hope and pray the Chiefs can pull off a miracle on Sunday.
Auburn football: Offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn a head coaching candidate again
He doesn't need to understand defense, he just needs to hire a guy who understands defense and allow him to coach. I think RR's loyalty to his WV guys and his need to control the DC was his main downfall.
Sure our offense sputtered at the end of the year, but imagine the pressure that might have been lifted off the offense, if our D was able to get some stops.
To me... Affiliation with Cam Newton is a negative. Affiliation with this Auburn team is also a negative. Finally, the most important negative...He's preparing for a Nat'l Title game, so how much time does he really have available to interview for this job/prepare to recruit?
So it goes; another day, another saga.
Miles won't be available because with our field turf he won't be able to find a good meal at the game.
Patterson won't be hired because he doesn't fit the B1G experience meme. Peterson thinks money is the root of all evil and doesn't want a better gig. Urban's too urbane for A2.
Get used to it: Hello, Coach Hoke!
I hate the Rich Rod haters. I hate that Brandon gave in to the haters. This might be FUBAR.
Loved the Brock Mealer video though. And the home page banner is great.
Why assume the haters got rid of him. I personally liked the guy and also felt he needed to go. Don't have to be a hater to want him replaced....
I am getting season tickets... to the Raiders. Death to the Niners!!!!!!!
We need some COWHER POWER up in this piece.. like woa
so harbaugh to the niners......and it's friday... and there's a mostly full keg in my house... and no one else home....
one ticket to blackout city, please
Can you fill your keg with Four Loko?
Bring on A World Held Hostage: Day Three Point Two!
I can see Stanford going out and signing Hoke.
There are a couple of top schools hot for Hoke, including Michigan, after his impressive job of turning around the SDSU football program.
Hoke would be able to do a lot with the Stanford football program, considering that he runs a pro-style offense and uses his running game much like Stanford does. His mentality is a fit, and there would have to be minimal turnover in terms of staff or style of play.
The only problem is, again, that Michigan may have him on the hook already.
Did the 49ers satisfy the Rooney Rule?
They interviewed offensive coordinator Hue Jackson during the period of time when it looked like Harbaugh would be taking one of the other 477 jobs availble to him.
Could Brady Hoke be our Jim Tressel? After reading the Mathlete's great diary, it seems hard to argue with his success. He's not a hare; he's a tortoise -- slow and steady. Tressel had great success at then 1-AA Youngstown State but many in Buckeyeland thought he was 'beneath' the OSU job. His only 'crimes' were coaching at YSU and wanting to be the OSU coach (OK, insert jokes about YSU violations here).
So, Brady Hoke has success at two smaller programs -- not the championship success that Tressel had, of course, but in the FBS -- and wants to coach Michigan. Would he be so bad?
And by the way, yes, I've been drinking, and I now have Hoke goggles.
47-50 is not four national titles.
But it's a bit easier to be a big fish in a small pond in 1-AA/FCS.
I'm not a Hoke lover, by any means. Just not a Hoke hater, especially after reading the Mathlete's diary. And by the way, Mathlete, congratulations on the impending arrivals! Way to do it with style, and my best wishes to Mrs. Mathlete. I'd post something on your diary, but I no can has iPhone.
Dude's won one MAC West title. That's a pretty small pond and he hasn't made a big splash.
that girl looked pretty good last night, too.
Why didn't I look into TCU for undergrad??? I'm dumber than I thought.
The pic would be the same except for the platter of cocaine on the table in front of them.
is referred to in hushed tones as the colored girl. I am not sure he will fit in at UM.
The more I read about Hoke and his love for Michigan, the more I want him.
If that's the qualification we're looking for, let's just fucking hire Brian and be done with it.
Brian already has about a million MGoBlog readers to help scout each opponent and analyze his team in extreme statistical detail. And make really witty comments. I'd be happy with that hire...
We need to save this response for all the "he's a michigan man!" / "he loves michigan, won't go anywhere else!" / "need someone who understands the history!" posts. Past history to this institution should be nowhere near the top criteria for hiring a coach. It can certainly factor in but should not be a deciding factor. I hear that Mike DeBord loves him some Michigan football and he was an actual coordinator (not a mere position coach) under the immortal Lloyd! Send the plane and a bag of cash and lets finish up this process!
Have you done your research on Brady Hoke?
He has more than the love for Michigan Football and wanting to be back in Ann Arbor. From 1995 - 2002 he was Michigan Defensive Coach, and in case you have forgotten or are maybe too young this would have been during a time when Michigan had a top defense and won the National Title.
Go into internet explorer and type is name, the online encyclopedia will give you his bio if you don't know what it is.
People still use IE?
"One good season"
Kind of undecided on Hoke
He's 47-50. Under 500 and you're advocating him for the Michigan job.
And thanks for the condescending attitude.
Not saying I'm a big Hoke supporter, but Gary Moeller was 6-24-3 at Illinois, and he worked out OK (minus the bender). And Bo never had a 12-1 season in his 6 years in the MAC. He was 9-1 one year but just 6-4 and 7-3 in the two years immediately preceding his Michigan hire. Like the stock market, past performance is not a guarantee of future results, particularly when those results came at bottom feeders.
Bill Lynch's Ball State team was 5-6,5-6 and 6-6 in his last 3 seasons. When Hoke took over it wasn't until his 5th year that they "improved" back to that level. Can we please stop trying to embrace Hoke....
He was titled Associate Head Coach several years here. I do think he'd do ok, and while I also tend to think he's slightly underqualified, it's his W/L record that scares me. I know he started from shit at both of his last stops, but man, I don't know.
I know that he is not popular here, but I would be very happy with Hoke.
Why, you ask? Oh, you didn't ask? Well I will tell you anyway.
First, Hoke is a defensive minded guy. He will make it a priority to recruit Big Ten sized linemen.
Second, Hoke is a great recruiter. Even Brian - hater of all things Hoke - would not dispute that.
Third, Hoke does love Michigan. Put that together with his recruiting abilities and I think that we very quickly start re-taking the state (and OSU) from our rivals. And, having worked in SDS, he probably has some good west coast ties.
Fourth, he is a tie to our better years. I know, not popular on this site. But, we have an incredibly rich tradition. We need to tie the steaming pile of wreckage that is our current program to that formerly great program. Otherwise we are just a steaming pile of garbage that used to be great.
Fifth - staff. I have no doubt that Hoke would bring in great asst. coaches. Louffler is now unemployed. Soup Campbell would likely return. These guys are great recruiters and even better coaches.
No, Hoke is not sexy - as a man or as a hire. But, he would be a great coach here. Remember when Lloyd wasn't an exciting hire - we won a NC, followed by several Rose Bowl appearances.
Could you point to proof of Hoke's recruiting prowess?
Also, Carr won with Moeller's talent, not his own. Carr utterly failed to do anything notable with some of the best talent in the country every year after the NC.
right now with what I have seen from the media, I will not believe it until I see Jim Harbaugh in front of a 49ers logo at a presser. "Sources" are not "sources" anymore, it just means that somebody has heard something from somebody. NFL live with the same claim, let me see him in 49ers hat (he put a 49ers hat on, and sexually assaulted co-eds for much of the 1980s - ba dum dum).
They've scheduled a press conference for 6:30 eastern. They've hired a coach and only one name has been linked to that job.
Hoke Kitty on the banner. I look at it and it's so ridiculous I've laughed more than once . . . right before I break down sobbing.
I hope the portion of the michigan fan base who wanted RR fired so JH could be our new coach, feel like idiots right now.
No matter what after the Gator Bowl.
there was a large contingent that would entertain RIch Rod being fired only IF Jim Harbaugh would be the next coach, because we felt Jim could unify the fan base and move us out of the dark ages.
Then, the losses, particularly the bowl loss exposing the much vaunted offense, and showing no defensive improvement pretty much sealed the deal. Rich would never really be able to lead at Michigan without some very solid reason to believe things would change. Brandon probably was pretty clear on what that meant (massive staff overhaul, and adapting schematically) and Rich was loyal to his staff.
DB dropped the ball big time. His timeline screwed everything up, including recruiting.
Convinced myself I could get behind Harbaugh, if RR got the boot. I will fully support whoever the next coach is, but damn the list of guys available that stir excitement is shrinking. I'm not sure what the best solution is to this problem, I just need something to root for goddamnit. Somebody tell me what to hope for.....
When the music stops where does he land??
I still hear music although espn is trying to turn off the sound.
great office video
the more I realize that what I really want is not this specific coach or that specific coach
what I really want is this
I want mid/late-november, cold-weather poundings of OSU...
I don't care who it is anymore, they bring us that and I will be glad to see them on the sidelines
this isn't the time or the place to discuss your sexual desires (...I want...cold weather poundings...)
I am sticking to my story that his wife wanted to stay there and she wouldn't move to the midwest. He, in my book, is officially whipped.
I feel the same way. I wanted RR to get a 4th year with a whole new defensive staff and if that wasn't the case then I wanted JH. I think our best option whether people like him or not is Brady Hoke. He is a "Michigan Man" and would love to coach here. I will be all in for whoever DB hires and I hope you will all do the same. We all know what happened last time our fanbase was divided over a coach.
How well will Hoke bring in the high level recurits? I think Jim, with all his star power, would have done great recuriting. Hoke... I am not so sure.
