The ND game is big, and a 6-0 start would be awesome. Lots of momentum heading into EL.
Scheduling a Winner
Let's not get ahead of ourselves. Even if we beat ND, SDSU and Northwestern are not gimmes by any stretch of the imagination.
Nah, I'm cool with getting ahead of myself.
ND is huge. It's the 2nd game under 2 new systems, it's primetime, they want to end the losing streak, and recruits will be there (some choosing between us and ND.) Northwestern and Sparty look to be tougher road games then Iowa and Illinois surprisingly.
I think it is ^Mattison
There's going to be a ton of hoopla surrounding the game with perhaps College Gameday being there, it being the ESPN night game, and the fact that there are going to be A LOT of recruits there. I'd circle that as the game of the season because I think it means a lot for THIS TEAM in terms of their confidence as well as a gauge for their season in addition to future seasons (with potential commits).
UM will beat SDSU. Remember all of the trepidation over facing UConn last season? Yeah.
Northwestern could be a challenge. I think they might be a pretty good team this season IF Persa has fully recovered from his injury.
Let's not get ahead of ourselves.
Hi, you must be new here. Nice to meet you.
If we lose to Sparty this year, I am going to move to Haiti for the rest of the football season. At least they won't have Sportscenter. We have a countdown clock and a DC who isn't bat shit crazy so I got that going for me, which is nice.
If we could beat one of ND and MSU, obviously I'd like to win both, but if we could take out one of those two we'd have a really good shot at starting 7-1. We finish with four tough but winnable games, and going 2-2 in those would put us at 9-3 regular season. I could dig that.
Up 10-2. I know its a bit of a stretch but the schedule is in our favor. The only games I'm really concerned about are Nebraska and Northwestern.
Not ND, MSU, Iowa and Ohio?
Nah, those are nothing to be concerned over...
Notre Dame. I'm not concerned with Iowa in the least bit. Ohio State depends on which qbs is starting for me too be worried.
All of those games are going to be tougher than you think. While I'm optimistic, ND, MSU, Iowa, Nebraska, and OSU are all very very tough games that I could see us losing. However, if everyone takes to the system and we get some momentum, have some good luck with injuries, and have a few bounces go our way, I could see us having a really nice season especially with ND, Nebraska, and OSU at home.
Don't kid yourself though, the defense will probably be stable enough compared to last year, but to go 10-2 or something like that, Denard is going to have to be even better this year and win some tough rivalry games a la ND 2010 to challenge for the B1G title.
I'm being really optimistic though. I think 8-4 is more realistic but you never know.
Is this Tom?
Before Pryor, osu used to be really good at beating people with an extremely average qb. I'm still quite worried.
I think I may concur
I detest Sparty as much as anyone here, but Haiti?
Haiti isn't far enough. I could imagine myself moving to Haiti, then throwing Haiti on to Mars if we lose to Sparty again. Seriously, I don't know if Mars is far enough away.
I should have thought it out a little better Haiti won't work at all. I would probably end up running into one of their recruits. With their global reach in recruiting, Mars really is the only place that makes sense.
you will still be seeing MSU recruits
Sparty is coming off an 11 win season, and we're coming off a 7 win season where we got stomped by every good team we faced. I don't want to lose to sparty, but doing so is not the end of the world considering we're installing a new system on both sides of the ball.
No, I'm Pretty sure losing to State would suck donkey balls.
I can't imagine losing 4 in a row to Sparty. We need to win that one.
Exactly on the last point about us. If we say MSU was almost an 8 win team, then we can also say that UM was almost a 4 win team.
We will double improve this year on D. I say that because i think our past defenses are grossly underdevoloped. I think matty will be able to work out the kinks that the other coaches failed to pay attention to. I look for big will campbell cam gordon and josh furman to play big roles one way or another. And i look for mike cox to emerge as our back and to rush for over a 1000 yards and 10 tdz. You can call me crazy but we got worry about nebraska ohio and notre dame past that we could really end up with 9 wins. I am just jacked about our new coaching staff. I think rodriguez did a poor job devolping our defensive players.
Maybe that's because Rodriguez had nothing to do with developing our defensive players.
His biggest fault was whiffing on Casteel and hiring GERG.
It is really hard to develop players on D when they are literally on campus for about a month before the season.
There were times that the average age of our defense was barely above the age to vote.
Im not arguing that RichRod did not develop defensive talent, however that was not his job as a head coach especially with an offenisive focus. His job is to coach and develop the offense while hiring a guy to tend to the defense (this was his failure, hiring GERG). Thats what assistant coaches and coordinators do, they isolate one side of the ball.
As for the players you mentioned, there is almost no question in my mind that you picked some buzz names. That being said, I dont see any of those guys taking significant strides this year. I think Will Campbell will be serviceable, but to be honest Im more excited about Richard Ash and Jibreel on the defensive line. At linebacker, I think Marell Evans will suprise people, and Jake Ryan will probably be taking the starting spot from Cam at some point this season.. I also look to Demens to take some strides in pass coverage.
In the defensive backfield, if Carvin Johnson doesnt take a huge leap I wil be shocked. Same goes for Courtney Avery.
I've thought about this. Who do you put where? Cam has been good at SAM but I think he could play WILL better than Jake Ryan (but maybe not) so I would think it went SAM - Ryan, MIKE - Demens, WILL - Cam. But Cam and Jake could be switched.
This gets me thinking, how amazing would it be if your LBs were actually named Sam, Mike and Will? And then how confusing would it be if they didn't play their corresponding positions?
If I wasn't worried all the computers in the world would crash by logging onto MGoBlog.
Well I hope the season starts the same as the past two years. I'll just take a different ending please?
Phil Steele actually ranks UM's schedule as the 17th most difficult for 2011 FWIW.
That was before the whole OSU thing, but we do have a hard schedule. MSU and Nebraska will be top 25 teams throughout the year (probably), ND, OSU, and NW could all be ranked when we play them too. Iowa will still be ok despite losing some pieces. That's 6 tough games. I think 2012 is the year we can win 9 or more.
2012 is worse neutral/at Alabama, at ND, at Ohio and at Nebraska. Odd years are our good years.
Air Force. We shouldn't underestimate them.
Never underestimate the power of the Air Force. The new F-22 and the F-35, plus all the smart bombs, dude we could be in trouble.
Damn forgot about Bama. That is going to be a brutal schedule. Hopefully we can win a few big games.
I think all of you are being way too optimistic. There are GREAT teams in the B10 but we are not among them yet. Things have been bad for 5 years now, but we are Michigan and they can't get worse, right ? This is not flipping a coin where the odds of getting more heads or tails in a row gets ridiculosely high, this is sports, non random, where the inertia of breaking out of a series of bad years is much higher than going bad after good years ( the situation we find ourselves in now ). IT CAN GET WORSE before it gets better. I will be satisfied with 7 wins and expect 6 and 6. In 2 years I expect to be a GREAT team, when Hoke gets to play with Hokeplayers.
I agree here. We won 7 games with squeakers in 3 of them last year. Against the top teams in the big ten, we were only in it for very small times, so expecting us to get better with new systems on both sides of the ball is possible, but not likely. I'm almost positive we'll improve on defense, but on offense I'm sensing a drop off (only for a year). The question will be whether our defensive improvement outweighs our offensive drop.
But 5 years?
Ooh I skimmed over that part of his comment. Yeah 5 years ago was 2006, and we were a very good team in 2006. I think we benefitted somewhat from a weak Big 10 in 2006, but an 11 win team in any conference is a very good team.
Who is the ranked first on that list?
V. Tech is #1
USC, South Carolina, Wash St, West Virginia, Illinois all get mentioned
think we will win at least 10 games if are defense plays better. Shoelace will show everybody that he is a great passer. GO BLUE!!!
Anyone who thinks this season features a cakewalk schedule is in for a rude awakening. On this schedule, I can spot no more than 4 gimmies in Western, Eastern, Minnesota and Purdue. That's it. San Diego State will come in featuring a very good senior QB, a lethal passing attack, and a metric asston of motivation. Illinois is on the road, and will be a tough matchup with Scheelhaase back at the helm. All the others are tossups or clear underdog situations. Really, I would be downright thrilled with 8-4, but I am expecting 6-6 or 7-5.
Hello, Baby Seal U.
Would qualify, because you couldn't miss more than 2 teams in a given schedule (unless you WERE on of those teams).
My attempt at being positive.
WMU- No tape for them to work with. So hopefully this is boring as hell show noting/shut it down in the 3ed game 27-13 game. W
ND- They play a Skip Holtz S. Florida team and I suspect a tough game week with no way to hold anything back. BH is putting a premium on ND/MSU/OSU. Dagnamnit we win this one the pressure will be on Brian Kelly's season and future with MSU the next week. We unleash a true Spread/Manball game. ???
EMU- Great week for a rebound or flat game. W
SDSU- They play Wash St. the week before, not saying WSU is big but it's still PAC-12 then traveling to the Eastern time zone vs. UM plus think Gruden vs. his old Raider team in the SB. UM should know SDSU weaknesses. W
Minnesota- I just hope they don't lose to whatever Dakota team they play before UM for S.O.S.. W
Northwestern- They play Ill the week before. Dan Persa scares me, NU O has always gave UM's D fits. ???
MSU- They come off a bye after playing OSU. Red letter game for both teams. Can't. Lose. Four. In. A. Row. UM has a bye week after so they'll be plenty of rest for our guys meanwhile Sparty gets Wisconsin the next week. W
Purdue- UM recovers two Onside kicks, coverts a fake punt and a fake FG. F-you Danny Hope. Purdue plays Ill the week before. W
Iowa- They play Minnesota the week before. A big game for the Legends division with a home game vs MSU the next week. ???
ILL- Bye week after playing PSU, maybe Zooker will have lost his team by now plus can now UM play Defense. W
Nebraska- is coming to an end of a "Welcome to the B1G, take it up the ass schedule" and has just played PSU on the road so maybe they don't have much left in the tank with Iowa to finish the season. ???
OSU- Just played PSU at home and it's "The Game" ....24-12 (sound nice like '69), please take cooler's with you when you leave. W
8 wins for starters, but being that I would worry if UM played the sisters of the poor the above is pure BS on my part and I believe nothing till the final whistle.
TV better not screw up the scheduling and let us play the game at noon. A nice 9 am Pacific time kickoff should having them getting up nice and early mental clock wise.
And MSU, dread schedule. They get 2 weeks to prepare, and I don't like how many times we've lost BEFORE a bye.
Yes, we get ND, OSU, Nebraska at home ...
What does that mean?
It means we play ND, OSU, and Nebraska. None of those three figure to be easy to beat, and we can talk about having trouble with Northwestern, Illinois, MSU, and Iowa.
That's 7 games I'm unsure about, so I'm not expecting anything too great this year. I'm expecting around 6-6 or 7-5. Despite the hardest games being home (exception: MSU) we must remind ourselves that the offense will look almost nothing like last year's offense and the defense, while it should improve, still returns most of the starters that managed to rank 110th in FBS defense in 2012.
This was entirely more pessimistic sounding than I wanted it to sound.
ND was a better team than we were last year. A QB injury is the reason we won that game. They will be very good this year. We, on the other hand, will be going through a transition on both sides of the ball. If we somehow beat ND this year, and dont take another mid-season nosedive, and perhaps even get better throughout the season, then the rest of the schedule looks very good. But ND will be a very tough test. Make no mistake about it.
*ND was a better team than us and they were going through a first year transition. That is not the case this year to add to what you said.
Western Michigan = W
Notre Dame = L
Eastern Michigan = W
SDSU = W
East Dakota = W
Northwestern = W
Michigan State = L
Purdue = W
Iowa = L
Illinois = W
Nebraska = L
Ohio State - W
An extra loss (Illinois, or OSU) seem equally likely.
Michigan didn't suck against mobile QB's. We sucked against competent QB's. This is why Tolzien lit us the hell up. Hell we got crushed by PSU's ginger wonder, and were lit up by Indiana's QB. The difference is that they weren't able to stop us.
