Scheduling

With the cfp showing it likes fewer losses than championships and strength of schedule should we cancel our upcoming home and homes against p5 teams? Had 2016 psu played akron instead of pitt they would have been in the playoff over osu. Had 2017 osu played kent state instead of oklahoma they too would have been in the playoff over alabama. So it seems the best schedule is one that minimizes losses, we get plenty of schedule strength from our division. Edit: the big ten plays 9 conference games while the sec and acc play 8. Plus in 2020 and 2021 we play washington and virginia tech both years. I'm all for playing a tough schedule but some point the schedule might work against you when the committee rewards fewer losses over conference champions. In the big ten east our schedule will always be tough enough. We don't need to make it brutal by playing two non conference p5 teams when the committee doesnt care.

Easier said than done. In 2020 and 2021 we play washington and virginia tech both years. You dont think it might be a good idea to cancel one of those series?

MSU is irrelevant. "Fly on the windshied" was what was posted last year.  There were also threads prediciting the demise of Penn State after Barkley.  Other teams are not the issue today.  We're going nowhere unless we start from scratch and earn it.  That means load up top Offensive and Defensive lineman who play with attitide.  Also, lets find a QB who can make things happen with his feet.  I don't care how many damn stars they have, but I want guys who play pissed.

I still don't understand why the AD traded a home game against Arkansas for an away game at ND. That has to be one of the stupidest scheduling decisions I've ever seen. Yes, I know it was to smooth out the revenue stream, but at the expense of a probable loss when Michigan can't afford one. Michigan is staring at 3 borderline unwinnable games next year because of it. ND, MSU and OSU on the road are almost certain losses. And I don't see how this team beats PSU or UW at home. Stupid, stupid decision.

"Borderline" unwinnable, genius. MSU and OSU will be much better next year. That is a given. ND will have a whole summer to prepare for Brown's defense. Look what S Carolina did to it in just a few weeks. Brian Kelly isn't stupid. He'll be ready. What have you seen that gives you confidence that this current staff will have this offense remotely prepared to take on those teams in hostile environments? I'll give you a hint. They won't. If Michigan's defense goes from being superhuman to merely really good, those are losses.

The Big Ten is getting tougher and tougher. Schedule cupcakes out of conference. We have to run the gauntlet next season. We could be improved and still finish 7-5.

I'm glad they scheduled Pitt and lost in 2016.  There's no part of me that wanted to see them make the playoffs.  Why?  So I can hear Kirk Fowler go all Gus Johnson and say PSU winning a stupid football game cleans away the turd stains of turning a blind eye to child molestation?

Just recruit the players and hire the coaches that can win the games on the schedule.  I believe the players are there, including all the freshmen than had a rough first bowl game.  Wake me up when the offensive coaches are there.

Wisconsin wasn't even really in the conversation after they lost the championship game because they didn't play anybody, so this logic doesn't really hold, and you don't make good football teams by avoiding challenges.

Again, they dont play msu, psu, and osu every year like we do. Plus according sagarin wisconsin had a tougher strength of schedule than alabama. Alabama being in is a joke. The only good team they played they lost to. Our schedule will be plenty tough without having 2 p5 non conference opponents like we have in 2020 and 2021. This isn't about re litigating who made the playoffs, but rather about learning from who thr committee likes and who they don't like and trying to shape a resume they will like. Based on the last two years they like fewer losses over championships and even head to head.
