"LSU might be willing to waive or lower Les Miles' 1.25M buyout to Michigan"
Schad on Twitter: LSU willing to pay for part of Les' UM buyout
Thanks for clearing that up. For a minute I thought the poster was trying to say LSU was going pay a buyout to itself.
That'd be interesting wouldn't it?
they would make the payment to their Dad, so that is fine...
My question is: If LSU is willing to lower the buyout, do they feel as if they could easily get someone better?
I thought they were going to pay Michigan Less's salary when he moves to AA. I mean, LSU's last 5 years of success were because of Michigan anyway. That IS where Less acquired his coaching abilities.
If they offer to waive it, they are, in effect, buying themselves out...
He also said that if offered the job, Miles would accept.
This might be more exciting if further down on the Twitter feed it didn't say that they would be surprised if Miles took the job.
Yeah I know, really they dont know crap. They could introduce Patterson or Gruden for all we know.
It isn't a contradiction.
The morning post says it his his own opinion that he wouldn't leave a powerhouse with a great recruiting class coming in to go rebuild at Michigan.
The evening post says a source close to Les Miles says he wants the Michigan job.
One was just an opinion before he found out more info.
at five, so this is all starting to add up!
I think Les Miles is the new head coach at Michigan.
...because DB ran the time past Tom to make sure it worked for his updates with the time difference and Tom's busy schedule this week. The Pimp Hand knows to respect.
So do we got Les Miles listed as a 'silent commit' to coach the team?
So nice, I posted it twice?
Does that mean 4PM Louisiana time which is 5PM Michigan time?
This is like your wife telling your mistress that if she's willing to take you, she'll buy the two of you a house. Very weird.
The fact that this makes no sense makes me doubt the content.
It says they "might be" willing to. Changing it to they are willing to is how rumors get out of control.
Typing on iPhone is a major pain in the Bielema.
I can't let that go without an up-vote, or at least an acknoledgment. I'm adding it to the lexicon.
Up vote? Oh, you mean +http 403! Yes, by all means proceed.
You should give it a swift kick in the Dantonios.
because Dantonio <=> balls
Dantonio = sweaty old scrotum wrapped balls with a plethora of rashes and sores dangling from a diseased dick.
with a side of gonorrhea?
With extra smegma.
An HTTP 403 Error to you good sir.
Reading your post transports me back to the 2400 wing of Couzens Hall in the fall of 1990 when I first heard that term uttered. I aksed, "What the heck is that?" It was explained to me...in gag-reflex-inducing detail...and its entre into my vocabulary became a dubious part of the mosaic of my college odyssey. A new term learned...a vile arrow in the lexicon quiver to be used sparingly upon a few worthy targets. A term that is more than a term...a term that casts its net upon an unfortunate swath of synonymous people...not just people, coaches...not just coaches...a coach...a single coach...one who looks like he's in a perpetual state of digesting that very thing while muttering about pride coming before a fall and fall coming before winter and about how little Mike Hart is (while quietly conceding how big Hart's pimp hand was for 4 years).
One should always practice good hygene in the nether region by scraping the Dantonio off of one's Bielema.
Thanks I am going to have nightmares after reading these comments.
Thanks for sharing as I try to finish my dinner.
Damn HTTP Error 403. How are we ever to recognize wit and snarkyness in these times of tribulation?
THis is becoming squirrelier than the 3 stooges.
I don't see now how Les Miles isn't Michigan's head coach. He's got the resume to win and LSU is practically asking Michigan to take him away.
You answered your first sentence with your second.
They must have a lock on Pelini
must be it - they consider pelini an upgrade. Probably trying to be done with the les leaving drama every few years.
cheaper and younger at least. it could be smart to pass the reigns while the program is still strong as opposed to... well, you know.
or RR, wouldn't that be crazy?
That would be a twist i didn't see coming!
Pellini to LSU and RichRod to Nebraska where he reunites with Casteel and coaches Taylor Martinez to multiple MNC's.
That's not even funny.
Would certainly put to rest all of the "can't win in the B1G" crap. God I hate the new logo, every time I see it, hear it, whatever, I actually spell out B-1-G. It sucks.
And that would suck to have RR land at another Big Ten school and kick our asses for eternity. It would almost serve us right.
With RR at Nebraska we would both be in the Big Ten West together.
That is the main reason for my fear.
Oh great... now I'm going to have nightmares. Thanks.
He's trying to sound smart, let him play.
Don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out, Les.
Why would Les want to leave this Southern Shangri La every few years?
Looks like the gator thinks someone brought their work home with them.
Wonder how that benefits them?
That would be telling. Schools aren't going to forfeit a million dollars without having reason to get rid of him.
this is just strange, all around.
this Miles press conference: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w7rYywMY6oE&feature=fvwk
(but in a good way... I think)
A) Alleva has completely lost his mind
B) (More likely). Les is gone, Alleva knows it and he's willing to cut a favor for a guy who had 6 good years and brought them a national championship.
I'd consider B, but LSU has some huge budget problems. They can't just ignore a $1.5M asset.
Possible, although if Les is making $3.5 million, I'd assume whoever they brought in would be making less. They'd make up that difference in the length of the replacement's contract.
Maybe not if they want a high profile hire. It's hard to get somebody to take a job in the middle of january. But you're right, might be a net positive in the long run.
is as worthless as the rest of the rumors out there. Even if they knew they wanted to fire Miles..which by the way just the other day they were talking about doing what they could to keep him there, why on earth would they wave his buyout while UofM is banging on their door to "talk" to him. I'd bet money the LSU AD has seen the picures or the UofM jet at BR airport, they know what's going on.
If LSU does wave his buyout, the only logical reason for doing that IMO is to save face. LSU has been a top program for 10 years now, losing their coach to us would have to hurt their pride a bit.
It would be interesting to watch them explain it to the legislature while asking for more money.
The economics are an extremely serious issue for LSU which is having budget cuts all over the place on the academic side (the actual focus of a university for any mouth breathing SEC trolls)...
An interesting take on the subject...
C) He knows he can dominate DB as an Athletic Director any day of the week and he is handicapping himself to make it a little more challenging.
LSU's AD knows that and wants Meeechigan to come back to glory and will do anything to help!
he hasn't tweeted it himself, but the espn cfb site says that schad says that miles will take the job if offered.
Did somebody give Schad his phone back? Has he been Tweeting again?
that I miss being able to give an Mgopoint.
Schaad always leaves me hanging (wa wa wa).
What in the hell is going on? Now they're going to pay us to take them off their hands. Shit is getting weird.
One good season (I won't remind you about Alabama and the bowl game) and the local Sparty apparently now has the stones to question the Pimp Hand. LSU fans don't cotton to Les Miles...they think they can do better and pay less money.
Your comment isn't "risky," it's flat-out-stupid. Miles is the winning-est coach in LSU history. Before you try to attribute that to Saban, ponder how Sparty did after Saban left MSU.
Is there another picture with the rest of the cat?
This is why I dont get excited/nervous whenever Joe Schad reports something. That makes 0 sense.
I find it doubtful that Joe Schad knows what he's talking about. National beat guys do well in professional sports, where everyone is so interconnected, but in the college game, it's the local beat guys that have the connections.
Like Mark Synder?
ok, not ALL local beat guys....
Has anyone posted on the fact that Pinkel declined be interviewed for the job? WTF ar ewe trying to interview Pinkel for? We are screwed.
Yeah, that is bad. It is looking like Miles or Hoke more and more every day.
I haven't heard anything about Pinkel from anyone, nor have I heard him saying he was declining any other "opportunities" (or anything vague like that).
EDIT: Never mind, just saw the link on TigerDroppings to the UM Rivals site. Not sure it's relevant, but I'm glad we at least looked into him, even if he's pushing 60.
This is happening, yo.
I need to get back to work.
Les Miles has very few fans in LSU. HIs clock management and risk taking doesn't sit well with the fanbase down there. If they think they can get someone else to take his place quickly that the fans would like more, I don't see why they wouldn't go ahead and let Les go.
down at LSU, regardless of his mishaps with the clock. Also, knowing ESPN's track record with Michigan, we know that Les Miles will not be the head coach of Michigan next year.
*cough* Pelini *cough*
Wrong. He's popular there. The local polls said something like 70 percent want to keep him.
Whoa, I shadt a little bit in my office chair when I read that.
Is saying that Gary Pinkel turned down an interview with DB, thank god.
I'm with you on that one. Do not want Pinkel.
Hell, if Pinkel was on DB's board, that opens things up considerably to a bunch of other coaches. Methinks that more than a few coaches (or more specifically their agents) are using Michigan rumors to get nice raises.
He also doesn't even bother to claim "sources" told him this "might" be possible.
Sofia Vergara "might" be coming over to my house to rock my world. Saying it on twitter doesn't make it any more likely to happen though.
Yeah, it's worth a try though.
Every indication in the world that Les is loved because his teams have won ball games and that is it. I say this - his relationship with LSU would be exactly what Rich Rod's relationship would have been if he won at UM - winning shuts mouths, but doesn't make the Alumni comfortable. 11-2 LSU with a coaching opening - line up the candidates they could pick from nearly anyone so best to let LM go with no strings to speed up process.
Uh, your avatar might be stolen.
It is the sport of kings. On his home planet.
please. My GF walks in to see me reading the latest on the CC. I am explaining about planes, twitter, and the candidates. Then she sees her second cat today on one of the threads im reading. Doesn't understand most of what im talking to her about, how many people are constanty refreshing. Or checking many links to find and "new" news on our CC.
However watching her laugh at the pics was great! Why kangaroos?
. . . whomever LSU wants to hire to replace Miles.
That'll teach them not to try to confuse us with reverse psychology.
Damn them and their cheap parlor tricks!
who would you rather have . . . Miles or Pelinni?
Neither one would make my list. They are both grenades with the pin pulled.
I stayed up to 1:30 in the morning on Friday/Saturday listening to Louisiana raido talking about how Miles had already taken the job. Supposedly, he hadn't even met with Brandon. Let's not get carried away.
Seemed like a good idea at the time
Perhaps the buyout waiver in contigent upon Miles/Michigan not pursuing any LSU recruits or other members of the Tiger coaching staff.
it does raise a question about his assistants, and what he's thinking. Hiring Les really only is half the suspense, because he's much more the "CEO-type" as Brian puts it. Who he pursues as OC and DC are nearly as important as him being the HC.
I presume Brandon would raise these issues with LM during any meetings they're having.
Makes perfect sense actually (and is bad for us bc it would mean no access to Miles' LSU staff).
Surprised that there is a buyout. Would have thought Les would have had language in contract if he jumped to UM.
I believe I read somewhere on here recently that his buyout is specifically for UM.
I'm sure Les would have loved to have that, but why would LSU have permitted no buy out for the one potential school that Miles would conceivably go to?
If my memory is correct I recall that his original contract at LSU had an exclusion for U of M should he want to return to AA. Obviously, he didn't care if he ever returned to UM after the sailboat incident or didn't have the leverage to place that language in his contract extention. Having a buy out exclusion for a specific school is not that unusual.
That would suck. I would rather have Michigan pay the buyout and have a shot at taking some of those 4/5* recruits and Chavis.
Hoke to Michigan, Miles to SDSU. Book it.
If Brandon is on the plane and if this is really a big misdirection.
to help speed the process for a smooth transition. Don't Les and Patterson have the same agent? Who knows shiite at this stage.
osu is paying for all the plane trips.
Brandon is just barrowing it for a test drive.
to negotiate something where part of the buyout is waived in exchange for Miles not poaching certain assistant coaches? Would such an agreement even be possible?
If it's in exchange for not taking Gary Crowton, they'd be doing us a favor, as any dual Chicago Bears/Michigan fans are aware. He's not John Shoop-bad (currently employed screwing up North Carolina's offense), but he's not good.
LSU success, over the last few years has been directly a result of recruting and stifling D's. Crowton was bad in Chicago and has done nothing of note at LSU.
Keep him away!
I'll take great recruiting, stifling D and a halfway decent O over mediocre recruiting, wretched D, and an O with "exciting potential."
can't believe lsu would already come out and say it now, but there is precedence for schools to not hold coaches to them.
remember beilein's was reduced- partly why rrod thought he could get his reduced as well.
Wake me when this is over...
if he comes with a Tressel voodoo stick pin doll. Get em right in the sweater vest.
We'll set the Tressel doll up on one side of the room and go after it with a semi-automatic pin shooter. Come on, my North Campus friends, innovate!
I AM having a bear of a time finding cognates to take... would that count for 4 credits of non CSE 500 level coursework? If you can get my advisor to sign off on it, I'm in.
a Full Auto belt fed pin shooter.
I have it! They will waive the buyout because LSU wants to hire rodriguez and there is something in his contract that would allow UM to recoup buyout money if he coaches again within a certain period of time!
This conjecture is brought to you by someone who has went insane as a result of this "process"
is based upon speculation derived from something called a twitter you're good.
First, an admittedly insane theory is posted. Then, someone tweets it to someone in the MSM. Then, that reporter tweets that it is being "discussed." (The character limit is the excuse not to reveal it is being "discussed" as a joke on a blog.) Then other MSMers pick-up on the tweet, only now it is being "reported" because the tweet came form a MSM "reporter." Then ESPN goes live on Sports Center on this new fact which is being "reported" in multilpe sources. This is soon followed by 72 threads on MGoBlog that call the insane theory insane.
See how easy it is?
I hate Michael Wilbon. He is a camera whore, just likes to be on tv, and I don't think Michigan fans are that bad. Would we really throw out Les Miles if he doesn't win 10 games next year? or has immediate BCS success?
He's a cubs fan and went to Northwestern...he's got plenty to be bitter about.
He has to sit next to Tony Kornheiser every day. That would make me suicidal.
Not sure which of the two is worse to be honest...
He definitely exaggerated but I think it's probably fair to say that a segment of the fan base and alumni ran our last coach out of town (whether or not it was deserved is all opinion, but from the outside it looks like we ran RR right out if town). I think more than anything he was saying that after RR we're less patient than ever. Which is probably fair, considering how insane we've been in the past week.
from the outside it looks like we ran RR right out if town
I don't think that's the consensus view. The guy didn't win, plain and simple. After the OSU game, most rival fans were of the "How can you possibly keep this guy?" perspective.
Northwestern grad who usually does not have nice things to say about us.
I wholeheartedly agree.
that anything may be possible at this point
I know Miles is staying put. Hokamania! Hokapacalypse!
someone find out what Herbstreit is saying!
schadjoe: "deal crumbles re UM insists on paying buyout, LSU refuses to accept"
Presser at 11 team meeting at 4
from the world of twits
gots to get this paper done. It's not like there aren't 80 million other rumors out there though so who knows.
Has confirmed the 4 pm meeting tomorrow via twitter - doesnt say what the meeting is for though
that makes no sense. it is now 6. you're saying the presser would be before the team meeting?
They announce at 11, players meet Les is More Miles at 4.
why wouldn't the call an informative meeting first? i.e., "hey guys, i hired les miles as your new coach."
Miles is the featured speaker at the AFCA Convention in Dallas tomorrow. An additional press conference and a players meeting in Baton Rouge is a lot to squeeze in. Granted; he does have known time management issues.
haha, +1 (figuratively speaking)
Wait, I thought the rumor this morning was that there was a team meeting today, and that DB was announcing at happy hour of the coaches conference in Dallas? What rumor do I believe?
All of them forever.
The only way LSU does this is that the alumni and big boosters want him out or don't care if he leaves because they know they can get Pelini.
sort of like how we knew we could get Harbaugh
I'd be a fan of hiring Scot Loeffler as the OC/QB Coach.
Head Coach in waiting
Yesss. The quarterback maker.
HC in waiting is a bad idea. Causes recruiting restrictions (see Will Muschamp rule).
Also, are you Crex's unborn child?
Can you fill me in? I know that Texas tried this and it fell through. What the heck happened? Can just hire in as OC and tell him he would have a good shot at it?
Yes - this exaclty.
Abort, abort, abort.......
They know he is more of a negative than a positive at this point...
If what Brian said was true, and Brandon is interviewing Miles as we speak, with this comig out, we could hear about our new caoch within 24 hours.
But does anyone think that part of the waiving of the buyout includes not trying to bring any currently committed recruits with him?
LSU would be in a much better situation with their top 5 recruiting class and a high profile coaching hire than it would if they lost Miles, the recruiting class went kablooey, and the coach is left scrambling for recruits.
This sounds far fetched, but I have trouble believing that LSU would waive the buyout without gaining something...
The only problem with this is its not in writing and a players comitment isnt in writing either. The only way i see this is the contracts language is poor, pelini is going to go to LSU or it's in milies contract that he can waive a portion to go to Michigan.
A coach can't control what recruits do. And coaches who leave on good terms typically leave the recruits be. And recruits don't tend to follow a coach in significant numbers.
This is what they are saying on the Scout LSU Board and the Tiger Droppings Board they are willing to wave part of the buyout if Miles leaves the recruits there
That adds some context. Thank you. (Can't vote)
i could live with that
although impossible, i'd much rather have Magee.
Can't get enough of those first-down inside handoffs to Smith?
Schad just tweeted that Petersen is staying at Boise. Officially announced.
confirmed by TomVH
I have confirmed there is a players meeting tomorrow at 4 pm, but can't confirm what it's for.
Michigan or LSU players meeting? I think Miles would at least say goodbye to the guys he's leaving.
There it is.
I clicked your twoolf link it said that page doesnt exist.
I don't know what to tell ya, it's there for me....
Is of Les Miles wearing Michigan gear. It says "We want" in the upper left, and "Les Miles" in the lower half. I think it's safe to say most players would be at least accepting of Miles as their coach. I'm all in for Les at this point fwiw.
If the current rumors of Les to Michigan are true, Herbstreit would have had possibly the earliest inside scoop of all time.
My productivity since new years
to still be above zero.
WHAT IS YOUR SECRET???
At least you had a steady decline, my production tanked starting New Years and has set up shop at the bottom of the chart and will continue to be there until the day after NSD.
The media knows we are desperate for news so they are just conjecturing about all this. They know didley...Only Bo knows didley. I will believe a story when it is official. I would be happy with Miles but would prefer Patterson. I don't think Hoke will be a wise choice. We need a name guy who can bring in top recruits over the next few years...Michigan needs to have top 10 recruiting classes every year.
That Les Miles is Bo's doppelganger?
as replacement HC or something?
Have they been picked up or are they just waiting for RR to get a new job. I would assume he will bring along all of his cronies. Miles would probably hire Fred Jackson back and I would assume GERG just retires or starts modeling senior citizen hair care products.
My guess: some LSU guy said that they couldn't afford to give him a pay raise, so they wouldn't match a UM offer - but it got garbled into the purple monkey dishwasher story in the tweet:
From what ive seen and heard LSU seems okay with letting Les go prob from pressure from their fan base and Les looks like hes interested or maybe feeling the heat that he might take the Michigan job. Lest finish the search and get ready for 2011!!!!
Spoke with family member tonight who is high up in the food chain at UM and stated LM was offered job and will be announced tomorrow. Rumor was his wife was on campus yesterday also(not so sure about that though).
his wife was on campus yesterday
Pics, or it didn't happen.
I heard from someone high up in the food chain that Les to M is done and tomorrow is a formality. Take it what it's worth, but, worth seconding this post.
Check out Wolfman's FB profile guys.
ZOMG, it's gonna happen. Please end soon!
Les looks good in that hat tho...
FWIW, he's since deleted that picture.
Also fwiw, he loves him some dogs.
Troy Woolfolk changed his profile picture on facebook to Les Miles in Michigan garb! .....no HOKE!!!!!!!!
I really hope we made a run at Gruden and Patterson. LM was not worth firing RR over
Can we just get a coach who will recruit defensive players like this? You always have to start early right?
If it wasn't poor form I would steal it! I guess I will have to wait for Pryor's future mugshot!
Honestly, you probably won't have to wait too long.
The chances of that are better than him returning next year to OSU!
I love that kid, do you know him?
The waiving of the buyout is a negotiation for the contract they plan to counteroffer with, not waiving what's currently in place.
SO by tomorrow night we will hopefully have a ...BREAKING NEWS.... HELLO The New U of Mich. Coach is.....
We will just have to wait & see.
T-wolfs facebook pic is les miles in michigan gear strong statement from a team capt
do we know if he is a kidder? I have to believe they had pretty strict instructions (If they were informed)
like to encourage all the old hands to take their sorry, fat behinds off and screw themselves. And yes--for the 100th time--firing the guy who went 3-5-7 wins and had everyone back without having a replacement so you can hire a guy who can't even speak with a translator is wretched stupid. Not what I expect from my school. Anyone who doesn't like these sentiments and who writes--for the f*ckteenth time--that the oversigning jackass will reform once he hits the B10 or that I'll like him once he wins--scr*w you, too.
At this point the program is like a 3-year-old who sh*t the bed; now we're flinging it at the walls and calling it filet mignon.
It's just business.
You could get a good look at a t-bone steak by sticking your head up a butcher's ass...
Sad on two counts. That Brandon probably buys into the Michigan man BS and that Hoke and Miles might've been the only two guys willing to come here anyway.
The only thing that makes sense is the following: Brandon has known that RR was going to go for some time - back to December at the latest. But he could not approach JH or LM until after bowls. He also did all the due diligence and determined that all of the constituencies and considerations supported a LM hire more than a JH hire. He also cannot afford to embarrass JH so he prepared a response at the RR presser to say JH to the pros, because he had already planned to go with LM. BH was never really in the picture except as a backup. But in order to (1) treat RR with dignity; (2) allow the bowl games to get played; (3) allow JH to save face (and permit a possible future hire), and (4) to get LM hired, he had to let these things unfold this way.
I am an employment lawyer. This does not qualify me in any particular way, except to say that I have been involved in executive hiring before and it is rare indeed that these kind of moves are not choreagraphed in advance. I think Mr. Brandon's years in the corporate world have served him well. This may have been set up months ago this way. I would be highly surprised if there is not a timeline somewhere on DB's lawyer's computer with this kind of thing put together in great detail. There may have been surprises along the way, but I'd put money on this. Admittedly, a small amount.
of DB's complete screw-up and piecing together--from the remaining body parts--an almost-convincing CYA narrative (or cover HIS ass narrative).
I really do understand your frustration - the scenario could seem like a screw up. But think about it. Do you honestly think that DB, a creature of the corporate world, has not been thinking of contingency plans for months and months with the single most important corporate decision he has to make? He has undoubtedly been considering his options since he took over - during practice-gate, after losses to B10 rivals, etc. I am absolutely sure he had a very short list of candidates long ago. I am actually also convinced he decided to hire Miles long ago. What we cannot be sure of is whether he told Miles that long ago (assuming I'm right, which is, admittedly, a big assumption).
But to me, all of the "DB is a screw up" crowd really is ignoring the basic reality of who DB is, what he knew his number 1 job has always been, and how he had to have been gameplanning this long ago. Again, he may have had bumps in the road, but to me this is really the only thing that makes sense.
Finally, if I were a betting man, I think that Miles has known he was going to get hired long ago, but he will take that to his grave. I mean my God, these guys played football together. This is like the mafia. The outside world will never, ever be inside.
if you find Miles repugnant and think RR deserved one more year. Appreciate the thoughtful response, however. . .
I am ready to start taking bets Michigan doesn't field a B10 contender for another decade.
How on Earth could a man who's won nearly 80% of his games in the SEC ever win at Michigan?
George W. Bush was also a creature of the corporate world. As were the CEO's that got us into the Mortgage Crisis. Just saying...
Interesting theory. You could be right. Except I think Rodriguez had a chance to actually save himself. I didn't believe that after Ohio State. He accomplished nothing of substance football wise with those practices and the bowl game further weakening any chance for him to stay.
Brandon acts unconcerned about the time this is taking, because he is. I think he is totally on the level; meaning what he says is actually what he is doing. Which is why he is so hard for everyone to figure out. We are so conditioned to look for the hidden agendas of everthing.
Long term, how Brandon treated Rodriguez and the players, and how he has approached this with such secrecy sets great precedents for Michigan doing things the right way.
DB stated in an interview (can't recall with whom ATM, I'll look for it) where he said that he had been putting together a list of coaches for a year (which goes back to before he took the AD job) because he knew this day would come. Doesn't sound like he actually had any confidence that RR could get it done here.
Brandon would have done this regardless of his level of confidence in Rodriguez--it's called succession planning, and it's SOP in the corporate world.
Even after he hires the new coach, he'll continue to maintain, as he calls it, "a dynamic list" of coaching candidates--just in case.
I think the article you were referring to was this one by Chris Balas:
“I’m grounded in the world of business,” [Brandon] said. “One of the things you do as a leader in business is put together succession plans. Those are not always anticipating terminating someone, but you anticipate the possibility someone could quit or decide they don’t want to be in a role. Thing happens to people.
“I’ve always thought if you have people in positions important to your organization, you should be thinking about back-up plans. That’s just what I do, so I have a list of people I’ve become interested in and think might be good candidates. My job now is to reach out to some of them and have conversations and ultimately get to a conclusion.
“It’s a dynamic list. It has been over the last year. You put people on the list, you get to know them a little better some come off, others go on… it’s not just a hard and fast list, but a list that’s evolved and will continue to evolve. With this announcement today, I can tell you already there are people, now that we’re in a search mode, coming forward expressing interest. I’m going to look long and hard to see who those candidates are, and do what’s best for the future of Michigan football.”
I wasn't aware of this article, but this is exactly what I was referring to - succession planning. But in this case, the candidate chosen has so much history that it only seems logical to me that this has been orchestrated for some time. I saw the comment about Fitzgerald and Pinkel, which does raise the question about whether DB was really conducting a "search." But it is very common to conduct "searches" in the corporate and higher ed world when the person to be selected is a fete accompli (sp?). In order for DB's "search" to be plausible, it would make sense that there be candidates. Why have a search: to preserve the illusion for RR´s sake (he could save face with the team and the outside world until the bowl game), to preserve the illusion for JH´s sake (so that JH could play the bowl game and then JH could make his own choice and not get rejected by UM), to preserve the illusion for the outside world, and ultimately to save face for DB whose credibility is on the line.
But it's not the one I'm thinking of. In the article I read, Brandon specifically said that he "knew" this day would come. Good find though.
I totally agree with you regarding Brandon and his character and the long term impact it will have on our program. I would think he is gaining the trust and respect of his fellow AD's as well as prospective future employees. The only thing I would change would be using the word "discretion" in place of "secrecy"
I don't know if I totally agree about LM being the main man in your theory but I really like your point about JH being a future hire.
JH goes to the pro's and gets canned or burnt out dealing with the pro players, by that time Les Miles has got the program back on track and is ready to retire. JH can come back and doesn't have to go through the rebuilding phase and is able to reap the rewards of LM's hard work. He has made the big bucks, satisfied his urge to coach in the NFL, and finishes off his coaching career in AA with a few NC's.
i like what i'm hearing!
How do you explain the Pinkel/Fitzgerald requests?
Take my wife... Please
but there is a players meeting tomorrow at 4pm, the reason is unknown but the meeting has been confirmed.
Maybe miles doesnt oversign cause he wants to but he has to in order to compete in the sec
I have just been listening to the ESPN affiliate in Baton Rouge and they said if Miles is fired they owe him a huge payout, something to the tune of $13M. Others have said that he was on the verge of being fired this year but it didn't happen because he overachieved with this team.
Reducing that 1.25M buyout to get out from under that bigger payout doesn't seem too dumb to me!
No, it would be dumb. They don't have to fire him at all. If he leaves, he pays - not them.
I think the previous poster is referring to what would happen if LSU fired Miles for some reason. His contract says that if he is fired without cause, LSU "might be liable under certain conditions" for liquidated damages of $18.75 million. See this amendment to Miles's contract.
Somewhere--I can't remember where--I read some speculation that LSU might want to get out from under this provision, and this might be a reason they wouldn't be that unhappy to see him leave and might be willing forgo all or part of the buyout Miles would owe them if he leaves for Michigan. Sounds far-fetched to me, but I'm not sure what to believe anymore.
The eliminating of the buy out is probably in exchange for the lack of raiding of the staff and recruits.
that's what i heard but i don't know how the kid's could be held to it.
Chengelis is reporting that Joe Schad says Miles is the front runner for the Michigan job.
If I forward this to a friend, I'll be reporting that you're reporting that Angelique is reporting that Joe S is reporting...
But then again. I know nothing.
"it's a wonderful place"
None of of LSU's supporters has an LSU jet like the M jet and the Domino jet, and they're afraid they're going to be bombed.
So they're figuring maybe they can lease a jet with a cool paint job if they save some of the dough they're spending on Miles.
Definitely the ticket.
If you look at LSU recruiting class they are all from LA. Can this guy recruit nationally, because 1 the state of Michigan does not have that talent and 2. If I live in another part of the U.S. I'm thinkin Les who
Yeah, if you didn't watch any college football at all. Or if you watched him win a national championship or maybe watched his Tigers win the Cotton Bowl last week.
He did pretty well at Oklahoma State, not exactly a recruiting hot-bed.
The rest of the Big 10 is laughing at us right now and I bet some of them are Soooo happy not to see Coach Rods offense again. I still say 5 to 10 years from now we will look back with disgust that he is not here.
Now I don't care who you are that there is funny
They'll stop laughing the instant Les signs. They do not want to compete against him.
And, by the way, I don't know a single opposing fan who feared RR.
Amen to that. Every OSU, MSU, Wisky guy I know just LOVED being able to count Michigan as a win instead of a the toughest game of the year.
Lord knows dantonio, tressel & beilema all benefiteed heavily the past couple years in recruiting.
I just talked to an evangelical believer in RRod and his comment was. "We'd have won a national championship in 2yrs if we'd kept him." I just laughed and told him I had a device that would run his car on macaroni & cheese, as long as it was kraft and was mixed and aged precisely. If you're going to just blindly believe stuff in the face of evidence you might as well pick important stuff.
The rest of the Big Ten has been laughing at us for three years running now. That will stop if Miles is hired.
I'm wondering if John Chavis would come with Miles to Michigan? He's a proven DC. God knows we need a good one.
I really hope that Chavis would come, but I am doubtful. He coached at his alma UT for twenty years, then has been at LSU for two. I really think that he won't leave the south east, but hopefully I am wrong. I would love to see the chief at Michigan.
you average out to a sane interesting person.
This can work out as long as Les is not allowed to speak more than 10 words without John Beilein also speaking on the same topic.
Les Miles can save recruiting, and turn this program around!
"Dee who? Sorry, young man. We're going in another direction."
I can't believe some of these RR guys on this board. Great guy, good coach but he has put this program in a place we have never seen. He wasn't going to work ever. Get over it for christ sakes.
Not sure if this was posted already or not......meh, I give it two "ha's"
That says a lot. That the school he "has done so much for" doesnt want him, I'm concerned that we dont either. I want this coaching BS done ASAP, but I'd rather have Hoke.
They'd only offer to lower the buyout if Les has told them he wants to leave.
Maybe part of a nice, no poaching our recruits clause maybe?
if the tweet is true, sounds like LSU is happy to be getting rid of him....hmmmm
