Schad: Patterson receives new contract extension @ TCU

Per his twitter. If true, then FML we're all kinds of screwed. Might actually have to resign self to Hoke or Miles

At this point I have to agree with your buddy. The environment for an "outsider" coach is toxic. They fired RICH RODRIGUEZ after three fucking seasons. It's really incredible to me. After the season Denard had... from a strictly professional perspective you would have to be insane to leave a successful job to come here. It's sad that I type "they" now with regards to Michigan (I graduate in May), but this decision makes me feel like I need to take a step back from this for a while. I still love M, but the decision to fire RR was cronyism all the way. If Hoke is hired... I mean think about that... what a fucking nightmare. The toxic environment we have created here for an outsider coach will severely limit our potential to grow.

I don't know why nobody is even considering Magee. I haven't heard his name come up once.

And then pretty soon applications will go down, and we'll talk about how we used to be better  a better academic institution than MSU, but then nuclear engineering and sheep research became the hot job sectors and we were left in the dust.  We're all going to die anyway, and for many of us we'll be impotent long before then.  Plus my ex-girlfriend was the best I'll ever do.

WHY BRANDON WHY!

... and my dick is small.  Probably gonna get smaller, too. FML.

I'll take a wild guess that our AD is not "retarded" so you can all exhale.  Can we all relax?  This notion of shock over RR's firing "after three fucking seasons" kind of ignores a lot of shit that even those of us like myself who were ok with giving him a 4th year must acknowledge.  It's not like some magical pimp hand from the sky suddenly cold-cocked a coach who was kicking all forms of ass on the field.  I wont go into all of the infamous records that RR broke in his 3 years with M--we all know them by heart.  I would've been happy if he could find one frick'n guy to kick a 30 frick'n yard field goal.

I understand that a lot of folks who are current M students or who are graduating in May are acquainted with RR in a way that others of us are not.  He's the only coach the current students have known.  For others like myself, it's different.  Bo & Mo coached while I was on campus and I've seen Lloyd and RR since.  Lots of different action there--lots of success too.  It's a perspective that lends itself to less surprise and disappointment over the RR outcome.

The decision to fire RR was not cronyism...actually, I couldn't give a crap if it was.  May the best coach guide the team,

Rest assured that the M job is not toxic.  M is not the Detroit Lions organization whose coach, Darryl Rogers once asked, "What does a coach have to do around here to get fired?"  That, my friend, is a toxic job.  Not the M job where the standards are sky high...not by a long shot.

Have a little faith that a man with the extraordinary life accomplishments, education and intelligence of our AD is not "retarded" (may that term burn in hell).  And have faith that the moment M starts winning again we'll all forget about our past adolescent-chick, freak-outs about whether the M job somehow lost its luster.  We'll be fine.

As they say in St. Lucia, "No Problems."

Holy Cow!

It is toxic when you give a BCS winning coach three seasons to change the offensive system and after a 7 win season you fire him. That is a toxic environment to walk into as a coach.

I'm really glad you got to see winning football in your lifetime. News flash, so did I. I am older than 14 years old.

This situation DB has put us in makes us a fucking laughing stock nationally whether you like it or not. You know what I saw on ESPN today? A lot of "Harbaugh did what was best for Harbaugh." Tony Dungy literally laughed at the prospect of himself coaching at Michigan. A mediocre coach at NW told us no thanks. A fairly new and unproven coach at Nebraska said no, there is no way we are pulling the Oregon coach (which I would love). This environment created by DB after giving a coach only three seasons to win more than 7 games is toxic whether you think so or not.

DB has done a lot of robotic corporate speaches, but rest asured he has never been an athletic director before and he has been a complete failure so far in his first major decision making process. This, that is happening right now, is a failure. Our coach was given an impossible task, not given nearly enough time to accomplish it and our golden boy, alumni replacement just told us to go fuck ourselves. Not to mention the timetable will leave this recruiting class a steaming crater in the side of the future of this program. We have all seen how horrible one missed recruiting class can be *cough* 2007! *cough*

Your point on the merit of RR's firing is well taken--I get it.  We could spar all night about his judgment with the defense and special teams or we can focus on the offense only.,,which had its own struggles against better teams down the stretch.  Maybe more time would've ironed this all out--maybe more time would've have RR eventually asking the same question that Darryl Rogers did.  Either way, it's moot.  He's gone.  I thought that DB was pretty clear about the red letter game priority that he placed on the job duty.  You can disagree with his emphasis on this priority but if you're an incoming coach, you know what's expected of you from this AD to keep your job.  If that nugget of up-front clarity counts for anything, it counts to make the job a worthwhile challenge--not toxic.

Did Fitz, a Chicago boy, former player for NU, married to NU gal, self-professed NU lover taking himself out of consideration surprise anyone?  Is it a surprise that JH has NFL dreams?  Dungy's remarks could be interpreted in a couple of ways.

I'm just not ready to flatline the M job just because every guy whose face the media chooses to thrust a mic at doesn't gush about us--at least publicly.

Let's just relax--your remark about stepping away from the computer is a good idea--we should all do it for a little during this whacked time.  Enjoy your upcoming graduation and rest assured that the successes that the guy on your avatar enjoyed will make their way back sooner rather than later.

(and I'm relieved that you're not 14 years old or else I'd have felt wholly inadequate for graduating at the ripe old age of 21)

Harbaugh won only two more games over his first three years than RR did here. 3 years is not enough time and the university turned its back on the coach so quickly that no coach in their right mind "Michigan Man" or not would come here to that sort of treatment.

A quote from Patterson about TCU:

"TCU let me grow as a coach"

"They gave me an opportunity to be a head coach and to do what we've been able to do. We've come a long way in 13 years and it's been fun to be a part of it. I feel like I'm just a member of the staff."

Those are things Michigan gave RR neither the time nor the acceptance to do.

We are down to the bottom of the barrel this morning as far as coaches who want to come here and you know what? We deserve it.

If you were a successful coach at another program without any ties to Michigan, would you:

A)  Continue on at your current position in which you are worshipped and will likely be able to coach as long as you want to.

B)  Switch to Michigan, where the last outsider was never completely supported by the fan base, and only got three years to prove himself, despite there being an argument (no matter how weak you think it is) that a 4th year was warranted.

Decisions... decisions...

and the defense got progressively worse. I get it Rich Rod is a great guy and a very good offensive coach but some people need to face the damn facts. He does not know or seem to give two nuts about defense. As a head coach that is absolutely unacceptable! I know most fans are aware of this but maybe some people forgot our defensive rankings the past 3 years:

Total FBS                Big Ten

2008: 66th               9th

2009: 82nd              9th

2010: 110th             11th

That is a total joke! A  3 - 3 - 5 in the Big Ten???  Come on now . Hoke, Miles, anyone who knows a lick about defense will be a step in the right direction for this program.

Harbaugh's defense at Stanford year 3 was 90th in the nation. Why is it that we hold RichRod completely responsible for having a horrible defense in year 3 with no excuses acceptable but Jimmy gets a pass because the team went 1-11 3 years earlier and he has a tougher time recruiting and blah blah blah. If RichRod can be held responsible, lets hold every coach to the same standard.

While Miles is eating grass and pushing himself closer to a cardiac episode, the coach we should be pursuing is leading his team towards his second FCS championship in his third championship appearance. Nobody seems very happy about the idea of Les Miles, so I submit that, FCS aside, Keeler has the qualities we're pursuing, and would be more acceptable to the masses. And to anyone who dislikes his FCS pedigree: Tressel. Booya.

All this web traffic over the last 3 years has to be good for Brian right?? I know I've been clicking on this site way too frequently throughout the day recently.

Panic mode is easier though considering the circumstances and that at least 3 coaches listed among potential targets have brushed us off without a second thought.

DB: Hello rita, is Rich home

Rita: Sure he is Dave, hold on a sec while i get him for shug.

RR: Hey Dave hows it goin', just got back from zingermans

DB: Hey Rich i was wondering What you were doing for next couple years, i might have been a little hasty.

what does he care? the school usually pays the buyout. What kind of school offers their coach who has a contract for 6 more years an extension for 2 more? This is a panic move by TCU, plain and simple. I'm not saying we're getting Patterson, I'm just saying this isn't the end of days scenario.

PurpleStuff, I've already addressed the fact that you're an asswipe in the past but just for kicks... "These are for show, conveniently timed so that no one can FOIA the contracts and find out the buyout provisions that really establish how much of a commitment is being made both ways. Stanford's a private institution and isn't vulnerable to the FOIA either but still, if Harbaugh sticks around it's not going to be because of anything the Stanford AD can offer but chooses not to." Well, there you go. Brian Cook has no idea how "it" works!

because contracts actually take, you know, time for the parties, their agents/lawyers etc. Unless you think he's shuttling himself back and forth between two different conference rooms negotiating two contracts at the same time (which would probably be considered in bad faith in the eyes of the law)

Isn't it possible TCU just gave Patterson and his lawyer the contract, which basically only ups his deal by two years and includes a buy out, while Patterson was off recruiting and/or possibly talking to Brandon. Doesn't mean he is or isn't, but it's silly to say there is no way Patterson is talking to Brandon because he just signed a deal with TCU.

No information is certain, but the different articles I've read indicate he was very involved in the contract talks, and that he is not going anywhere.  He was at home watching the Cotton Bowl.

Here are two of them.

With Michigan and Stanford among notable coaching vacancies, Patterson is staying put in Fort Worth.
