Nobody would be mentioning Gruden were he not currently an entertaining sportscaster. Please.
January 8th, 2011 at 9:46 PM ^
In fairness, I think it has to do with him winning the Super Bowl. But there's no plausible reason to believe he wants this job.
January 8th, 2011 at 9:42 PM ^
Why do people think we are going to make a "statement" if we hire Miles? There is a reason that a lot of LSU fans are happy that he might leave. People know that the only reason he is leaving LSU for UM is because he went here. So I don't think it's some huge "statement" by hiring him.
PLEASE NO LES MILES! PLEASE!
January 8th, 2011 at 9:48 PM ^
"There is a reason that a lot of LSU fans are happy that he might leave."
Um. Maybe because every team has fans that want a new coach? There were a lot of people calling for Urban Meyer's head before he retired, that doesn't really prove anything.
I'd say that there is a reason his AD came out and said that he will do everything in his power to keep Miles, and that is because he wins games.
January 8th, 2011 at 9:52 PM ^
Many there do not like him for some of the same reasons that have already been listed on this blog. He was the laughing stock of college football earlier this season including much bashing from people on this very board. Yet now we are to believe he is the answer for Michigan? No, thanks. LSU can keep him.
January 8th, 2011 at 10:07 PM ^
but the interest in him is probably and indication of our desperation at this point.
January 8th, 2011 at 10:16 PM ^
He was the laughing stock of college football earlier this season
Is anyone laughing now? Once again, a Miles-coached team won 11 games and is going to finish in the top 10.
January 8th, 2011 at 10:36 PM ^
It just that you and others are able to look past his complete lack of integrity for a few wins. Do leaders do things just because everyone else does something or do they forge their own path? The constant defense I see for Miles screwing over his recruits is "well everyone in the SEC does it". That is just pathetic. But hey he was 11-2 right? That is all that matters for an upstanding school like Michigan?
January 8th, 2011 at 11:15 PM ^
and you know what, we'll end up getting a michigan man who doesnt rub anybody the wrong way who is exactly what you want..... and doesnt win more than 8 games a year and you'll start complaining about not enough wins. shut the fuck up
January 8th, 2011 at 9:46 PM ^
But I'm officially done bashing any potential candidate. I hated all the crap Rodriguez got, and I'm not shoveling any more.
January 8th, 2011 at 9:59 PM ^
or the way he left OK state to go to LSU. However he does have a pedigree for success in the SEC. LM could turn it around the quickest,

January 8th, 2011 at 9:52 PM ^
i think its pretty obvious that les miles is probably going to come here... that video that is linked shows that he was not committed at all to LSU... i think he will be introduced soon... the announcement will be made before the OSU game so he can pull a tressel and announce an upset victory over OSU in ann arbor next year...
Im not sure how to feel about it just yet... as long as he doesnt oversign players I think i would be pretty happy with the hire
January 8th, 2011 at 9:54 PM ^
In fairness to Brandon in this ESPN article, link below, it says Michigan started contacting LSU before the cotton bowl. So Brandon is def keeping this all quiet.
January 8th, 2011 at 9:58 PM ^
DB has boxed himself into a corner. Now, with the clock ticking and recruits fleeing and panic rising, he knows he needs a name hire or bust.
January 8th, 2011 at 10:39 PM ^
I don't care if fans like you are panicking. I'm sure Brandon isn't panicking (or feels he has boxed himself into a corner), given that only three days have passed since he fired Rodriguez. The level of impatience expressed on this site is mind-boggling.
January 8th, 2011 at 11:11 PM ^
The impatience is mostly due to recruiting. If we don't get a coach fast, recruiting will be a disaster. And we can't afford a bad recruiting class.

Also, most teams make a cc in December. DB has chosen to wait until late in the game. He gambled on JH and lost. Now recruits are fleeing and the margin for error is narrow. That's why he's in a corner. Plus, he clearly was somewhat unprepared. For a guy who claims to keep his own counsel, and who purports to be fully plugged in, he hasn't explained why he suddenly pulled an about-face and hired a search-firm. Hence, anxiety and impatience.

January 9th, 2011 at 12:15 AM ^
Hey, feel free to panic. I think it's foolish, but I think it's also foolish to have concluded three days after Rodriguez's firing that Brandon has backed himself into a corner and "was somewhat unprepared."
Also, there was no about-face. Brandon said at the press conference that he wasn't going to form a search committee. Forming a search committee is not the same thing as hiring an outside search firm. Bill Martin formed a search committee three years ago. A search committee is a group of people (such as former players) that an AD pulls together to help identify coaching candidates and provide advice on who to interview and perhaps who to hire. Brandon is not doing this. He is doing what any CEO does when searching for a top-level executive: hiring an outside search firm, not to help him identify candidates, but to do a lot of the leg work that is involved in these searches, such as making initial contact with candidates or their agents to gauge interest, vetting the candidates, and providing advice on contract negotiations.
If you're concerned about how long it's going to take Brandon to hire a coach, you should be happy he's hired a search firm. Doing so will speed up this process. It would have been bad news if he had formed a search committee, because that would have slowed the process down.

Urban Meyer doesn't fall all over himself when the clock gets inside a minute left in a game!
Time, after time, after time!
January 8th, 2011 at 10:00 PM ^
And I've no doubt that Urban is just sitting there by the phone, hoping for a call from Michigan.

miles has averaged 10 wins a year in the SEC West... better than hoke's resume at least... still bitter about harbaugh
January 8th, 2011 at 10:07 PM ^
with Miles. My only concern is age. Who will he groom to take over when hes done but I guess we can cross that bridge when we get to it. A younger coach who is less proven or an older proven guy who can build now and leave it in good condition...I'll take him.
Go Blue!!!
January 8th, 2011 at 10:24 PM ^
...Harbaugh later?
I really like Harbaugh, but I don't think now is the time for him to make a hero's return to Michigan. But in five to seven years, with NFL HC experience behind him, the time may be right for Harbaugh to return to his alma mater.
As for Miles, at least he went outside of the IMCT for many of his ideas. His offense is wide-open enough that he may even get Denard to stay. His age doesn't matter. The internet/information explosion seems to have changed the marketplace. I don't see many coaches staying for ten years at any school in the future.
The employment market is now too fluid for any coach to spend his entire career in one place. A good coach will have more offers every season than a hot girl during prom week. Whoever pays the most will get the most. And, of course, demand the most.
January 8th, 2011 at 11:16 PM ^
Miles now, Harbaugh later and a combo of Brady and Hart after that.
January 8th, 2011 at 10:07 PM ^
Here's something to chew on...
If Miles leaves, what are the chances LSU goes after Mark Dantonio?
They've hired an MSU coach once before, and it worked out pretty well for them. And Dantonio has to know his stock is unlikely to ever be any higher once MSU starts playing a real schedule again next year.
January 9th, 2011 at 12:20 AM ^
Dantonio is old, has a heart condition, and has never won a bowl game at ytMSU. There are better coaches out there for LSU to poach.

"Go to bread."
January 8th, 2011 at 10:09 PM ^
Say what you will about Miles's character. If he comes to Michigan, we'll suddenly be glad we have a lot of recruiting spots still open. They will fill up fast.
January 8th, 2011 at 11:04 PM ^
Over fill.

I don't think we'll need Broekhuizen or Gibbons after the new kicker arrives.

DB: Les, why should Michigan hire you? You're probably too old, you've got a shitpot full of issues with the NCAA, you breed controversy, heads will asplode, kittens will be sacrificed.
LM: I won a National Championship and I know how to beat Nick Saban. Say - don't you guys play him in 2012.
DB: When can you start?

I like how ESPN reports pretty much every rumor. That way, when something does turn out to be true...they totally knew it ahead of time!
January 8th, 2011 at 10:37 PM ^
Les Miles = oversigning and negative recruiting. Please track down the Outside the Lines episode on oversigning if you're not convinced . If he's a better fit at Michigan than Rich Rodriguez, I...don't even know how to comprehend that.
