SB Wins Another vs NWU 16-1 Mercy-Rule

Submitted by MGoSoftball on

The Softball Team poured it on to NWU again today at Alumni Field.  It was another near perfect day for a ball game.

Caitlyn was 2 for 3 with 4 RBIs, Romo was 1 for 1 (HR) with 2 RBIs and 3 Runs Scored. Lauren was 1 for 3 (HR) with 2 RBIs and a run scored.  Silo also went deep and long 1 for 3 with 1 RBI and 3 Runs scored.  Ashley went 1 for 3 with 2 RBIs. Lyndsay went 1 for 3 with 2 RBIs.

Haylie was the starting and winning pitcher.  She game up 1 ER off 4 hits.  She struck out 4 and walked 1.  Another fine start for Haylie.

The Big Ten Tournament starts Thursday in Lincoln.  We are obviously the #1 seed.  As it stands today, we would play the winner of #8 Ohio / #9 Purdue at 2pm on Friday.

Great game, glad it was on BTN for our viewing enjoyment!  Just an all-around team win.  Multiple home-runs, good pitching & defense, every single player reached base safely at least once.  Can't ask for more than that, although I would appreciate the announcers being a little less negative about Wagner - all she did was rack up her 18th win of the season, allowing only one run on 4 hits, but the commentators were ragging on her all day.

Romero continues to intimidate B10 pitching.  After jacking a 2-run shot in the first, she was walked 3 straight times, two intentional and one semi-intentional (once the count got to 3-1 and a passed ball opened up space at 1st, they just put her on).  The most remarkable to me was when NW issued a free pass with no outs and a runner on 1st.  That goes beyond respect, that is outright fear!  Having her services will be a huge boost to the team for the rest of this season as well as for the next three!

Boy, I dunno, I felt they were working a little too hard to not seem pro-Michigan today.  They were really nitpicking everything about Wagner's pitching all day the way I heard it.  Maybe I'm oversensisitive about these things, but for someone who only gave up 1 run on 4 hits, there was a lot more criticism than I would've expected.

I didn't see anyone mention this, but today Sierra Romero set the Michigan season record for home runs with 22.  And to think she is only a Freshman.

I did not mention this.  Romo has more single season homers than Dorian Shaw and Samantha Finley and she is only a Freshman.

I will put money that we will have a NC within 3 years.  This year we will lose some very good seniors in Amy, Jacklyn, Ashley and Spidey.  But our core is still very young.

I hope you're right about that NC!  Always tough to say, because there are a lot of great teams out there, but we've got as good a chance as anyone, I'll definitely say that.  With Haylie & Sara in the circle for two more years and the Sierras here for 3 more, I am really, really excited about the future.  As I've been saying, B10 pitchers had better settle in, because it's going to be a long, rough ride for them trying to find answers for the foreseeable future.

Looked up B1G record book.   Conference games only HR record was 10.  By my perusal of conference box scores it looks like that was Sierra Romero's 11th conference HR.

She is still two HR behind the conference HR record for all games - 24, but of course has probably at least 6 more games to play.

I am the only Michigan athlete in the last decade to merit being called only by my first name.

Sincerely,

Denard.

about this on numerous occasions.  It is a softball "thing".  The fans sit much closer to the field in SB.  It is a more intimate setting.  We yell out "Get a hit Amy" or "Come on Sara, throw a strike by her".  This can be heard through out any softball stadium or sandlot field.

So my style is geared more towards the players and SB fans.  I know the players dont mind when I write about them using first names.  I know it is irritating to some casual members of this board and I appologize but I write to honor the players, parents and hard core fans.
