SB wins again on Lane's W/O infield single

The SB Team won a thriller today vs NC State at the Judi Garman Classic at Cal State Fullerton by a score of 1-0.  We finished the highly prestigious tournament 4-1.

Haylie Wagner was nearly perfect today after a few bumps and brusies after returning from injury earlier this month.  She pitched 8 innings, faced 29 batters, struck out 6, walked none and had 2 HBP.  She scattered 5 hits and did not allow a run.

The winning run was scored in the bottom of the 8th.  In NCAA the International Tie-breaker is used.  This places the player who was at bat the previous inning when the last out was made, gets placed on 2nd base.

In this case it was Nicole Sappingfield.  The first batter up was Sierra Romero and she singled to RF pushing Colie to 3rd base with no outs.  Sierra stole second and NC State intentionally walked Sara to set up the force at the plate with no outs.  Brandi Virgil pinch ran for 'Sara.  Ashley Lane hit a hot shot to 3rd and the 3rd baseman could not make a play which scored Lyndsay for the win.

Hats off to NC State Pitcher So. Emily Weiman who pitched very well today.  She pitched all 8 innings and gave up the one run but she struck out 8 and walked 1.

What a wonderful weekend for the ladies.  The VT game was puzzling but they bounced back to win 4 in a row against tough teams.  Great job ladies.

a low scoring game and ties happen regularly.  I have even put a quick bench player in to bat when there were 2 outs of a tie game (last inning) so I could control the next inning.  If the bench player struck out then I would have her starting off at second base the next inning.

I have NEVER asked a girl to strike out or not do her best although I have been accused of that.  It is just strategy.

But seriously, we will get challenged for sure.  There are 3 teams that will contend for the title.  The new format favors us because we have two dominate pitchers.  A few other Big Ten teams have a platoon system as well, most do not.

The B1G is not known as a strong conference.  Last year only two teams (us and NW) made the tournament.  Most of the best players are from warm weather states.  They dont want to build snowmen for recreation, although we have an Ace up our sleeve in Coach Hutchins. Kids would crawl to play for her.

I disagree with your assessment that the new schedule favors us; this year it is a series of single games. That favors teams that have one stud pitcher. A double-header schedule favors a team like Michigan, which has always used two pitchers, even when the #2 is really not all that strong.  In the end, it saves wear/tear on the stud and the stud often comes in to relieve the #2 starter. An example of this was the Tay,lor/Speierman year.

I'm impressed with the increased strikeouts by Dreisenga. Last year she was much more of a pitch to contact pitcher and since UM's defense is never top notch, that's a risky situation to be in. And, she was the clear #2 last year; ideally, we have more of a 1a/1b situation this year.

there are 3 games not 2.  I would agree with a 2 game schedule back to back would not be a problem for 1 Ace.  However, 3 consecutive games is just too much at this high level.  We play Indiana for a double header but all others are 3 games.

We do not play Wiskey who has the best OOC stats in batting and pitching.  Wiskey will be one of the 3 teams that contend for the BTT.

Yes, there are 3 games per weekend, but that was true last year as well.  The only change is that last year the games were Saturday-Saturday-Sunday, and this year the games are Friday-Saturday-Sunday.  The games are more spread out, so there will be less work for the #2 pitchers.

are spread out over 3 days.  That is a problem.  Double headers are not used this year as in past years.  Single games does not help, it hurts.

I prefer my pitchers to pitch back to back in a DH.  They are warmed up and loose and I like to go with the hot arm.  If I had only one Ace, I would not like to pitch in three consecutive games.  It is just too much for that pitcher to get loose and warmed up.  It takes a lot of energy to get warmed up.  Some pitchers can throw 50-100 pitches to warm up.  That is the equivilent of a complete game.

So if a team has only 1 Ace, they will throw many more pitches in single 3-game series than a 3 game series with 1 DH.  It is all about the number of pitches thrown REGARDLESS of whether those pitches are in a game or warm up.

So 3 single game series helps those teams with a good #2 because that pitcher will get MORE not less pitches.  This format helps us and not by a little but a lot.
