SB: Win over Western

Submitted by MGoSoftball on

The Softball Team had another great game tonight at Alumni Field.  The Western Michigan Broncos made the 100 mile trip to Ann Arbor only to get smoked by the Lovely Ladies in Blue 8-2.

The game ball goes to Kelly (Christner) who went 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored and 3 RBIs.  One hit was a HR.  Silo (Lawrence) went 1 (HR) for 3 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBIs.  Tera (Blanco) went 1 for 4 with a solo blast.

All-American Watchlist Sierra (Romo) Romero went 0 for 3.  She did reach base twice via a BB and error.

Haylie (Wagner) was the starting and complete-game winning pitcher.  She gave up 2 runs (2 ER) off 4  hits.  She had 10 strikeouts and only 2 walks.

We open a 3 game home stand against Iowa.  This should be 3 wins.  Iowa is 10-24 and have been blown out 12 times this year.  It should be a good series where Coach gets some of the bench players some rips in front of the home crowd.

It is great to get informative recaps of the softball games. Nice job with that!

As for me, I feel like when we refer to female athletes by their first names in situations where we wouldn't with male athletes*, we undermine what they're doing on the field by making it cute. First names are how you refer to little girls on the playground. Last names are for athletes who are better at sports than I am.

*I understand there are exceptions. See Denard, for example.

Michigan can take the all-time series lead against Iowa this weekend. Iowa is the only B1G team Michigan doesn't have a winning record against.

The series is 53-54-1. In the 90s/early 2000s the B1G was Michigan and Iowa. They met in the World Series in the 90s, too.

I like Michigan's chances to grab that series lead this weekend.

Christner has really come on as the season has progressed, I must say.  I can't say for certain, but I felt like early on in the season she was struggling a bit, and I was wondering just why she was occupying that 2-spot with some other, seemingly more potent bats in the line-up.  She's really hitting well now, though, and has her batting average up over .400 after this game, good for 2nd on the team (3rd if you count Vargas, who has only started 7 games).  She's also in a 4-way tie for second in long-balls with 8, and has also pushed her OBP over .500.

While writing the above, I kept noticing Vargas' place on the various lists.  While she has only played in 17 games, starting 7, her number are strong indeed.  She's hitting over .400, slugging over .900, and getting on base over half the time.  Obviously she hasn't faced the same pitching gauntlet that some of the other players have, but regardless, those are fantastic numbers for a freshman to be putting up.  They may come back down to earth a little as the sample size gets bigger, but she has more than done her job stepping into the line-up with Sweet out.
