SB Closes Tourney with a Win
The Softball Team closed out the USF Tourney with a win this morning against Samford 4-0. The temperature is 73 deg under mostly cloudy skies.
Senior Amy Knapp, Junior Caitlin Blanchard and Sophomore Sara Driesenga were the offensive heroes today. Amy went 2 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI. Caitlin also went 2 for 3 with an RBI. Sara went 2 for 3 with an RBI.
Freshman Sierra Romero continues to shine by going 1 for 2 with a run scored and an RBI. She also had 5 assists on defense.
Sara was the winning pitcher. She allowed no runs and 6 hits. She walked none and struck out 5. She also had a HB.
Also we had a first-time player today. Her name is Kelsey Susalla and she HAILS from Garden City, Michigan. Kelsey helped her high school reach the State Finals twice. Kelsey is listed as a utility player but today she played 1B. She is a left-handed batter. Welcome to Michigan, Kelsey. We hope you have 4 years of success on the field. But more importantly, we hope you have even more success in the classroom. The entire State of Michigan is proud of you. Thanks for going Blue.
Overall, a very nice performance this weekend by the lovely ladies in Blue. Coach Hutch was able to get a good look at the Freshman recruits and she has got to be exstatic about their play. Coach was also able to get the other Freshman some reps as well. The 1-run loss to USF was disapointing but considering that we sputtered at the end of last year; this weekend was a complete success.
Haley Wagner did make the trip with the team. There were some comments in the previous posts about her remaining back in A2. I could not confirm any other details about her status. It could be that Coach Hutch wanted to get Sara in the circle and get some quality time early.

Softball schollys are different from football. Most schollys are not full-ride. Typically only pitchers and catchers get full rides. The rest is spread out over the rest of the team.
The number of softball programs per division and the number of shollys per team ( ).
D1: 286 (12)

D3: 392
NAIA: 205 (10)
JuCo: 470 (24)
Each school determines how much it costs per year to attend full time including books, fees, room & board, transportation etc. Then the number of schollys times the yearly cost equals total amount given to the team. The coach then determines how to spread the love around.
I have seen medical redshirts be handed out but rarely do schools give out redshirts.

This is similar for all other non-revenue sports as well.
It always bugs me when people start talking about paying players but they don't even realize that football and basketball players have the added benefit of full-ride scholarships. Most student athletes have partial scholarships.
