SB beats WMU; 8-0 Mercy-rule

Submitted by MGoSoftball on

The #12 Michigan Softball Team (32-7) defeated WMU 8-0 in a classic mercy-rule win.  Coach Hutch took the opportunity to get bench players into the game.

We scored all 8 runs in the first inning.  Caitlin Blanchard went 3 for 3 with 3 RBIs and a run scored.  She continues to impress and has her batting average about .400.  Amy Knapp went 2 for 3 with 1 RBI and a run scored.  Amy had a triple today.  Ashley Lane went 2 for 3 with a run scored.  Lyndsay Doyle went 2 for 2 with 1 RBI and 1 run scored.

Haylie Wagner was the starting and winning pitcher.  She pitched all 5 innings and gave up 0 runs off 3 htis.  She struck out 6 and walked 0.

This was a great opportunity for the bench players to get some reps.  Coach has the Freshmen performing key roles and Coach does a great job of cycling the players in the line-up.   The bench players received some quality reps today.

The Bullies of the B1G are what I affectionately call Michigan. 5 straight conference titles and beating the snot out of everyone in the Midwest earns them the title.

Softball plays an insane amount of games. I'm amazed how quickly the rack up games. Don't the best teams regularly end up with 60 or 70 wins?

which is a team I've seen up close and personal recently. Look for some ridiculous score, 15-0 in five innings wouldn't surprise me depending on which pitcher they start. They were also on the road fairly late today, which might have added some stress to their routine.

Seems like we've been doing a great job lately of jumping out to big leads and then cycling in some bench players to get them game experience.  It's great to do this, and also drives home how annoying the mercy-rule is (Hutch has expressed her opposition to it on a number of occassions as well).  A) Michigan at least is clearly not running up the score on anyone, we're playing through the bench, and those lost innings are coming out of playing time for players who don't see a ton of action, and B) if Michigan can score 8 runs in an inning, so can another team.  No lead is safe in modern softball, this isn't 1990 anymore, and softball no longer has soccer scores all the time.
