Saturday Sports OPEN Thread

Submitted by Mr. Yost on

This is actually a pretty decent day for sports, however, I'm not sure anything really deserves it's own thread outside of the Army AA Game.

That said, we can use this thread for all of the games today. Here are some games of note:

1p: U.S. Army All-American Bowl (HS Football)
1p: BBVA Compass Bowl - Houston vs. Vandy (CFB)
2p: FCS National Championship - Towson vs. NDSU (CFB)
2p: Michigan State @ Indiana (MBB)
2p: GT @ Maryland (MBB)
2p: UConn @ SMU (MBB)
4p: Duke @ Notre Dame (MBB)
4p: Temple @ UCF (MBB)
4p: Oklahoma St. @ Kansas St. (MBB)
4:30p: Chiefs @ Colts (NFL)
5p: UVA @ FSU (MBB)
8p: Saints @ Eagles (NFL)

It looks awful on TV.

They're doing everything to get on TV, they're getting ready to take out seats in their stadium and create a "beach club" with sand and everything. Apparently they're going to be a sand volleyball court as part of it.

Sort of off-topic considering the game is tomorrow, but does anyone else think that Marvin Lewis could be on the hot seat if the Bengals lose tomorrow? I'd have to check, but I'm pretty sure he has never won a playoff game, despite a handful of appearances. I would think the Bengals fans out there are getting a little bit restless.

Bengals have only own like 5 playoff games in their history and this is the first time they have ever made the playoffs 3 straight years. Now, if they get blown out or look completely unprepared to play, then maybe he goes. I can't see it happening though.

I'm not a Bengals fan but I'm surprised how long he's lasted already. He's 0-4 in playoff games and their teams always seem to underperform expectations. Granted their history isn't very glorious but I feel like they could have done better. Ownership must love him.

USA U-17 is playing Canada Pacific for Gold in the WU17 Challenge in a half hour. Two Michigan recruits on the roster; Nick Boka and Brendan Warren have both played great tournaments.

We're outscoring teams 43-6 through five games. I expect them to win the gold.

Edit: Ferris St vs Colgate is 5:07PM start time

Not sure what they are showing on BTN. I think they assumed Minnesota would be in the Championship game, but lost Friday. So 8:00pm game is the 3rd place game.

Edit: Colgate beats FSU 3-0 tonight. #1 spot could be Minnesota, St. Cloud, Providence come Monday.

What a weekend for them, beating the #1 and #2 teams in consecutive nights. There aren't really any college hockey history buffs but I would bet that's the first time an unranked team has beat the top two teams in the same weekend or consecutive games in years and years. Maybe ever.

Expect them to come flying up the rankings. I'm downright shocked they pulled off the double upset. The odds of them winning that tournament were probably something like 200:1

For those concerned about the imminent fall of the SEC, never fear.  Vanderbilt is here to ease all of your worries.  Yes, ladies and gentlemen, the Commodores are the New Best SEC Thang.

One of the more glaring stats from this game, as we come up on a Vanderbilt 3rd and 15, is that these teams are a combined 2-23 on third downs so far in this game.

EDIT: Make that 2-24. Vanderbilt managed to get a few yards on a standard "Shit, no one's open....gotta run" draw play.

...he's a douche to the inth degree for thinking we're the reason his program was a POS. I mean HE, my friends is a bitch. Tom Crean is the kind of guy that deserves to be punched in the face just for being Tom Crean.

IU alum here. His comments concerned Jeff Meyer's actions while an assistant coach at IU under Kelvin Sampson. Regardless of what Meyer may have done at Indiana (and I hold Sampson largely responsible for, yes, wrecking our program), Crean should never have confronted him, and indeed he apologized to Meyer right after the game.

Apology or no apology, that was such a crazy confrontation. It was the 2nd game between the two teams, his team had just outright won the B1G championship, Oladipo is laying on the ground in sheer joy, and he starts screaming at Meyer?!? I definitely lost all respect for him after that game. I just cannot imagine what he was thinking in that moment.

So NDSU with the current roster would be bowl eligible in the FBS, easily (I think Sargin has them 40-something in all of D-1).  They haven't lost a game in more than two full regular seasons; they could have lost this one and still been, honestly, the best FCS team by a ways.  I know from Appalachian State who was in the same place a few years back (when they definitely DIDN'T play Michigan) that this kind of dominance doesn't always last, but if you are NDSU's AD are you at least exploring going up?  They'd be immediately competing for conference titles in the weaker FBS conferences even without the recruiting bump they'd get, and there seems little left for them to do at the FCS level (seriously at some point does going undefeated get old?).

is wearing an earring as part of a deal he made with his team in the preseason.

He looks ridiculous, but good for him for keeping his word.
