Saturday Night Drinking Thread

Submitted by BrownJuggernaut on

I started drinking, came to MGoBlog, and realized that this thread wasn't up yet. I had a Jack's Abbey Octoberfest to start, and I'm currently having a Sam Adams Summer Ale. I might switch to Gansett Summer after this, or I might shut it down. On TV is UFC 150 with NFL Network (Houston-Carolina) as back up. It's good to watch football, but:

So... three weeks from right now (like this very moment), we will be watching Alabama and Michigan. Hot damn.

You guys ready for it? I can't wait. Go Blue!

That's awesome. I remember when you brewed this batch several weeks ago when I was about to brew my first batch. I was shooting for a pale ale but I think it morphed into more of a pilsner. Had my first bottle a couple nights ago (testing 2 weeks after bottling) and it was great (light and refreshing). I hear that after week 4 they're the best and ready to drink??

I think he's probably referring to "hop water" or "IPA light" because he may have used too much water for the recipe... I always "cold crash" my beers to clarify them and the keg or bottle condition and the yeast survives.

I brewed a peach lager yesterday on Mexican lager yeast (WLP890). Too bad I have to wait 12 weeks for this!

an Irish Red that I brewed with three pounds of smoked malt.  I'll use four or five pounds next time.  Still good though.  I just kegged a blonde ale that is pretty good, and should get better.

Tonight I'm drinking Vat 33 IPA from CJs in Commerce Township.  Beer and food are both pretty damned good there, as is the talent.  Happy Sat night, everyone.

I am settling in with some Paulaner Premium Lager and switching between the Tigers game and the final night of the Olympics. I returned home a few hours ago from a dual birthday party celebration at Weber's - my son's 5th and my father's 70th. Both birthday.

but not always available.  Centennial is like the horny girl down the street...she always seems to be available when you need her.

My GF lives in Grand Rapids, so I'm able to go to Founders a lot.  Regardless, we are SO lucky here in Michigan.  Did you know there are over 110 breweries in Michigan now, with another 10 or so on the way before year end?  Awesome for us craft beer lovers.

Yeah and I just saw that Former Founders head brewer is going to Perrin. That should be good, it's the guy who started dirty bastard and Kentucky breakfast stout. Should lead to some interesting developments.

Your gf lives in Grand Rapids? Have you been to HopCat yet? If you haven't, and you like beer you need to go. It is the best beer selection I have seen and the food is decent too.

My GF actually LIVES IN COMSTOCK PARK, so we drive by Perrin every couple weeks to see if any progress.  Probably this fall.  Didn't know it was a Founders brewer, but not surprised, and yes I'm sure it will be great.

Hopcat has great selection, but their own beers aren't so great (a couple are okay).  Have you been to Michigan Beer Cellar in Sparta?  It's about 15 minutes north of the city, and quite good actually.  Schmoz is decent too.  Also, there are two more breweries (Mitten and Elk) opening in GR before year end.  Very exciting.

Old Boyz Brew House (Spring Lake) and Odd Side Ales (Grand Haven) are also very good.

I have to give them a try next time I am out that way. I have family around spring lake so I will be heading there for sure.

I live more in the Flint area, so we are spoiled by The Redwood Lodge who has some great beer that isn't mass produced. If we go north on 23 we hit both black forest and Frankenmuth brewery who have some decent selections as well. And both Dragonsmead and Kuhnhenn are close by as well. I don't know if you have had it but Final Absolution is a very good Belgian trippel, and under the kilt is good but it's no founders db.

I love the fact that we have all these great breweries, that we can discuss and you always learn more about it. All Ohio has is great lakes and thirsty dog! Ha we win again!

The food is still really good, but it was better a few years back. The beer is still top knotch. Have you been to Alex's market on Grange Hall Rd and I-75. One of the best selections I've seen. And there is a restaurant in holly, called blackthorne, it's not well known but they got a real good selection of beers. Last week they had some Dogfish Head 120 minute IPA. The food is good enough, but let's face it to go for the beer. Check it out for sure

in late June, but ControversiALE wasn't available, that I remember.  WAIT, that used to be "Hangin' Frank", right?  That beer was/is AWESOME!  Bartender told us the whole story about why they changed the name (don't know if you're aware or not).  Great stuff.

You're right about the name.  I never had it when it was called the Hangin Frank but I remember hearing the controversy around the old name (hence the new name).  I'm from northern Michigan so I always try to make it to Short's whenever I go home.  Awesome, awesome place.  I highly recommend the pub to anyone in the area.

Sailing today, which is to say I've been drinking all fookin' day.  Since about noon, I guess.  Molsons and Labatts early, Oberons later on.  Truly it's a Pure Michigan weekend, with sailing today and heading up north tomorrow to hang out with a friend at his cottage.

Wailua Wheat from Kona Brewing.. Enjoying the last few days of vacation before heading back to Oregon and I am really looking forward to the start of the season; watching Michigan football and tailgating at Oregon games. Man I miss being back in Michigan.
