Saturday Flyover Alert: Practically an Airshow

Submitted by BlueBarron on

This year, the University is celebrating 100 years of the aerospace department (of which I'm a grad, yayy). Here is the flyover schedule for Saturday, it's awesome (with pictures because I'm an aviation photogrpaher):

B-17 'Yankee Lady'

B-25 'Yankee Warrior'

This here's 'Panchito' but similar color scheme to 'Yankee Warrior'

P-51 Mustang, F-86 Sabre, F-100 Super Sabre

Not necessarily flying together. I've heard the F-100 will do an afterburner pop over the stadium, which is really cool. Might make ya jump.

Boeing Stearman

Lockheed Electra Model 12

T-34 Demo Team

There are also three helicopters listed:

Enstrom 480B
Eurocopter
Sikorsky S58T

And that's all I'm allowed to say ;)

EDIT: Also, don't expect these to all fly together. An F-100 can't really fly slow enough to stay in a good formation with a P-51 (see Thunder Over Michigan Airshow 2013). I've heard that they will start doing flyovers at about 3:15.

I think we've proven that's not true. We owned Iraqi and Afghani air immediately and only sort of owned the ground several years later. In a WWII context, that's a largely true statement. Today, not so much. The Marine Corps "Small Wars Manual" was right, it's nearly impossible to defeat a determined insurgency.

That's great . . . it is practically an airshow. And I'll assume some current generation stealth fighters or bombers are what you can't officially say.

Only thing I wonder:  how will the Brandon Haterz twist this and complain? Some people aren't happy unless they're whining and complaining about something.

Option 1:

IN MY DAY WE DIDN'T NEED NO DAMN AIR SHOWS - THE AIR SHOW WAS ON THE FIELD! IT WAS WANGLER TO CARTER - YOU DIDNT NEED NO DAMN RA/18/ATTACK DOO HICKEYS FLYING ABOVE THE FIELD.

Option 2:

THIS SEEMS LIKE AN OBVIOUS MARKETING GIMMICK TO GET BUTTS IN THE SEATS - AND I DON'T MEAN JAKE. TOUGH IT OUT SON, YOUR KNEE'S GOT OTHER LIGAMENTS. NEXT THING YOU KNOW WE'LL HAVE THE PLANES PARKED NEXT TO THE STADIUM AND YOU CAN GET YOUR PICTURE TAKEN WITH THE PLANE AND A NOODLE FOR A DOLLAR

Option 3:

It's too loud near my house that I bought without noticing the 100K seat stadium!

Option 4:

Complaint about combination of military recruitmnet/sports and/or wasted resources be it money/fuel/hippies/etc.

I ran out of sarcasm...

A corollary to to Option 4 is that this is politics, and anything political doesn't belong at Michigan, or shouldn't be posted on the board.

Other than that, excellent job . . . as I wrote my post, I was thinking of the noodle and the halo and the fireworks and the "get off my lawn" contingent.

It is safe to say that fans in general are not pleased with the current state of UM Wolverine football. To keep up interest Dave Brandon and the Athletic Department are pushing every button they can push to try to keep up interest. The to-do check list reads like this:

1. Rock music - check

2. Even louder rock music - check

3. Deafening rock music - check

4. Promotional hot dog give away - check

5. Promotional T-shirt give away - check

6. Package ticket discounts - check

7. Options 4-5-6 combo - check

8. Buy a ticket - get a ticket to other event promo - check

9. E-mail blizzard to current ticket holders - check

10. E-mail blizzard to UM faculty and staff - check

11. Fly overs - check

12. Gimmicks - rocket guy - check

13. Theme half time shows - get clearance to play expensive contemporary pop music- like Beyonce - check

14. T-shirt guns - check

15. Lucky winner drawing at the Staidum - check

16. Them pre-game shows - get calendar and see what we can salute next week - check

The only box he can't check is the one he wishes were on his board - the one labeled - good winning football team.

All of these efforts just show that beneath the solid corporate business veneer the Athletic Department is seriously worried - a bad season this year could lead to a major downturn in next year's renewals and the effect snowballs. Behind the usual smiles, handshakes and business as usual facade they are probably churning a lot of stomach acid.

We just have in hang in there and enjoy these benefits - and hope we don't have a long stretch like the period from 1949-1969 when Michigan was good but not really ever great.

Go Blue - if we lose to Utah, I will still go to the games but fear a long shadow has fallen over the land of Bo.

Taking a regular feature of Michigan athletics and making it better isn't usually something people complain about Dave Brandon for. It's when he tries to 'create' the future that we get frustrated because 'create the future' really means 'doing what Penn State and other conference schools already do.' Something innovative but uniquely Michigan will be welcomed - book it.

Yes, Brandon should be held responsible. He has made some bone headed decisions. Being held responsible, however, doesn't mean that all his decisions are stupid. It seems that there are some who reflexively here "Dave Brandon," and their first thought is, "what moronic, money grubbing thing is he doing now?" When you try to paint things as either "bad" or "good," you get into trouble. There are some things that Brandon should get credit for, just as there are some things he should be castigated for.

If Brandon is a good executive, and not totally tone deaf, criticisms need to help him change some of the things he has done. But you know, I do agree with several things Brandon is doing. Time doesn't stand still for anyone. You have to make changes with the times, while being respectful of the past. I don't think that Brandon should be crucified for trying some things that don't work. It wouldn't help if he was paralyzed by the fear of opposition. For me, the biggest problem would be if Brandon fails to listen to criticisms and to accept that some of the things he has done have failed.

My frustration is with those who are simply seeing negative in everything right now. The so-called "haterz" are those who will criticize EVERYTHING that Brandon does.

Let me use an analogy. A lot of people love to wax poetic about how wonderful Wrigley Field is. Wrigley Field does have it's charms. But the reality is that the facilities were not updated, are cramped, and are not an enjoyable place to play. And as a fan, there are lousy things about the park. Now, you don't need to tear Wrigley Field down, but you do need to acknowledge that there have to be some updates and changes.

Brandon is making some of those changes for Michigan, and it isn't a bad thing.

I wish I could flyover in my 210; the FAA frowns on that kind of stuff!  <BigGrin>

FWIW, I have flown in a P-51 and it was definitely a cool experience; there is a good chance I may get to fly in it again next Saturday (in California though)..

Looks to me like the Army Air Corp is showing up in AA on Saturday - that's freaking awesome.  FWIW - my dad was an airplane mechanic in WWII and was stationed in Northern Africa & Italy (and even served under Patton for a short time) working on P40's before we came back stateside and went to U of M Dental School - Class of 1950.
