Satisfaction = reality/expectation

Submitted by CLord on
Any half sane M football fan is beyond satisfied with everything associated with the program from when Hoke and Brandon departed to the present.  The reality of the Harbaugh hire and thereafter all obviously far, far surpassed all reasonable expectations.

But as Harbaugh's first season arrives, the bliss we've indulged will mature as we behold the season and that's why I post, because I find myself horribly conflicted about expectations and satisfaction.

The Smeagol part of my brain says lower expectations, be OK and comfortable with 7-5 or even 6-6 because:
1. It will be a year of transitioned schemes, and thus growing pains.
2. Aside from 49ers yr 1, Harbaugh's first years haven't been instantly uber.
3. We have a new starting QB running a new system.
4. Our RBs/receivers/OL are totally unproven.
5. This year OSU is elite as opposed to just usually very good, and MSU is very good as opposed to well, Sparty.
6. Most importantly, Harbaugh deserves some latitude and time to "implement" and I don't want the Harbaugh love train disturbed unfairly be anything that happens in year one.

The Gollum brain says hell no, Harbaugh, increase expectations.  8-4 or better because:
1. This cupboard is not bare. 8 returning starters on both sides.
2. Hoke recruited well and horribly under-coached his talent, and with Harbaugh and staff, our talent will play at and well above its level.
3. MSU/OSU at home.  PSU still weak.
4. We bring a seasoned Big 10 QB in to manage the game while the staff gets the most out of the OL/receivers/RBs.
5. Harbaugh/Drevno/Durkin/etc.

So, get fired up?  Or Stay Calm and Hail On?

Thoughts welcome to better calibrate these conflicted expectations and thus satisfaction as we behold the reality of this upcoming season.

The last few years we've played a max of 3 good teams in a season. This year I count maybe 4 since Minnesota is away. We can be very mediocre and go 8-4. If we're a "good" team our only tough games should be MSU and OSU. No way do we go 6-6.

Is a 29-20 record over the next four seasons and to make a bowl two years from now. But only if you have a Andrew Luck as QB. This is exactly what you should expect. This is what has been proven and demonstrated. No more, no less.

This team is not dissimilar to Harbaugh's first team with the Niners.  Game manager QB, highly talented defense.  If we can get Frank Gore type production out of our RBs (a question for sure, but there's no doubt the talent is there), then it's not farfetched to think this team could have a 49ers-esque turnaround in year 1.

Disagree. Not saying my equation is necessarily spot on, and I implied that reality as it is perceived because one's reality really is only whatever they perceive it to be.

But by your equation, if I expect a national championship season, and a national championship season happens (as perceived), then (NC season - NC season) = 0 satisfaction.

By my equation, satisfaction would be 1.

On the other hand, if I expect 0-12 and it happens, my satisfaction would still be 1, so my formula isn't  perfect either.

14-0.

But I think that every year.

Mostly I want to see personal and team improvement. My expectations are that they'll win MOST if not all of the "games they should" and may get an upset in too. But really I want to see the machine forming this year, that players improve and the team plays better as the season goes on. I want the Michigan team that plays OSU to be able to kill the Michigan team that plays Utah.

A national championship 3rd game against OSU, with Michigan winning The Game, The B1G championship game, and the Natty by a combined 152-0 (and Harbaugh going for 2 in all 3 games).

OSU goes 11-1, only loss to Michigan. the B1G ADs have a meeting and deciding to right/continue the wrongs of the 1970s they vote to have M and OSU play again for the B1G championship. After winning again, Michigan is the #1 overall seed but OSU only falls to #3, seeing as every other team in the country has abotu 3 losses, and OSU's only two losses are to #1 Michigan.

Also agree ... I want to see the "improve every day" mantra take hold and show fruit.

That does not mean I want losses ... it just means I don't want crappy Akron-like wins.  The Akron win in 2013 was as satisfying as eating cotton candy for dinner.  The warning sirens of what was to come were loud and clear.  What was to come ... came and went.  It was ugly.

The only way Michigan progresses to real competition with the likes of OSU is to, as Harbaugh preaches, get better every day.  I'll take an 8-4 season this year with a clear line going up to a 10-2 season with a handful of sloppy, undisciplined Akron-type wins.

Have you seen an ophthalmologist lately?  I think they can help with that thing going on with your eyeballs.

Any Michigan fan has to be fired up about this season.  After all:

Harbaugh!

Eight returning starters on both sides.

One of the four tailbacks is going to break through a very improved o-line.

The coaching staff has improved for every facet of the game.

I completely agree about expectations, and will try to temper mine.

But - I feel better about this team's returning talent and coach than I did about 2011. 11-2 happened. It doesn't always have to be pretty, but if we can find ways to win behind defense for a month I think our running game can round into form to make us a competitor against every team on our schedule.

Parallels are there. Harbaugh inherited a team stocked with players, following a beloved, but less than great Head Coach (Dear Mike, please don't kill me. Your eyes are crazy and you're one of the best Bears ever).

Harbaugh's definitely walking into a pretty good situation

While Harbaugh assembled good staffs at prior CFB gigs, I doubt he had the open checkbook at San Diego and Stanford that he enjoys here.  Maybe someone can refute this with, like, ... facts, but my sense is that the staff overall here is better than what he's enjoyed elsewhere on the CFB level.  A top-shelf staff should accelerate improvement.

Also, the defense is already pretty good (assuming 2014 translates to 2015, given the number of returning contributing players).  That's a good foundation upon which to improve.  And the OL finally has some maturity.

For those reasons, I think this will be an 8 win season with a decent bowl game.  Which is much better than what Harbaugh did at San Diego and Stanford.

Another reply because you're so right about the expectations bit. I was thrilled with the outcome of this hoops season because my expectations after departures and injuries reached a nadir of "get better and compete." We did that, and it was fun to watch.

I'd be shocked if we lost more than 4 games. 11-1 at best, 8-4 at worst. I'm sticking with 10-2. The Utah game is going to be very telling IMO.

Jim Harbaugh will not tolerate mediocrity.

I can't remember ever being more excited for a season to start and I have sky high expectations this year.

We return a bunch of starters from a defense ranked 7th in the nation last year (ahead of MSU, btw), and we're adding Peppers and Lyons (although losing a few key guys too). I think this D is going to wreck some teams this year with guys like Taco, Wormley, Mone, and Bolden coming of age. That should provide Harbaugh a bit of breathing room to get the offense going.

I care about the trajectory.

I don't actually expect to see a "Harbaugh" team early in the year.  His time and his staff's time with the players is very limited.  He's not going to totally transform them in a month and a half of having them for a few hours a day.

But I do expect to see a Harbaugh team by the end of the year - tough, organized, competitive.

So in my mind, I'm heavily discounting losses in September.  An 8-4 year with 2 losses in September is a 10-2 season to me if the other 2 losses are close and competitive.

I'm not going to freak out over losses to Utah and BYU if we are taking care of business against Minnesota and Penn State, and are tough against MSU and OSU.

But at least beat either MSU or OSU and screw at least one over. As far as the season goes, steady improvement and developing an edge would be sweet. I could live with 8-4 in year 1 and taking off from there
