San Diego Union-Tribune: Frank Clark attacked Philip Rivers
Chargers offensive players were visibly angry with a Seahawks rookie defensive lineman, Frank Clark, saying he attacked Philip Rivers in the pile after another Seahawks defender had sacked the Chargers quarterback in the second quarter Saturday.

Oh boy....
Edit: Actually, the video shows Rivers pulling on Frank's jersey for whatever reason.

Per my comment below, the NFL.com play-by-play of the game shows Frank Clark was not credited with the sack, but that #77 was called for unnecessary roughness. [2nd Quarter SD drive starting at 14:15]
3-4-SD 43 (11:46) (Shotgun) 17-P.Rivers sacked at SD 34 for -9 yards (97-J.Hill). PENALTY on SD-77-K.Dunlap, Unnecessary Roughness, 15 yards, enforced at SD 34.
Having seen the play, that unnecessary roughness was SD #77 going against Frank Clark. From my memory of the play, the video seems to be edited between where #77 moves to #55 Clark, who's still on the ground, and where the ref points to SD #77 (indicating his penalty). It doesn't show #77 tossing Clark around. EDIT: UFR of the UFR: I see that Clark seems to be going back into the pile, and the video may not be cut but the camera closes in so you can't really see Dunlap doing more than trying to pull him back out. But Clark wasn't penalized. The San Diego tackle was.

Rivers looks like he was trying to kick somebody.

to balance this piece of yellow journalism.

So yeah, I see nothing wrong that Clark did in that video. The only one doing anything wrong is everyone on SD's OL who did literally nothing.

And didn't look up until I heard Frank Clark's name, the first time it was called. It seemed like he'd sacked Rivers, and then somebody else attacked Clark pretty brutally, not letting him get up.
Now that I remember, I'm pretty sure there was a penalty called on the SD player (#77, not Rivers). Maybe they knew Frank's off-field reputation and were aiming for him? Since the sack I saw was the first time I heard Frank's name, maybe this other play was later and retaliation for his first sack? Would have to look at the play-by-play.
EDIT: Checked the play-by-play and what I saw must have been the video posted here, but he seemed to be the victim rather than the perpetrator. Clark was credited with 2 tackles and no sacks. The sack here was credited to Seattle #97, but SD #77 was listed as penalized for unecessary roughness. So that must have been the play where #77 took it out on Clark. Looks like Clark was holding on at the bottom of the pile, but the video doesn't show the extracurricular activity that resulted in #77's penalty.

Looks like he shoves Rivers head into the turf as he's getting up, around the 0:05/0:06 mark, after which Rivers grabbed his jersey and tried to pull him back...

From the headline (and Clark's past actions and size change) I was going to suggest that he was on steroids, but then I watched the video and decided that he's fine and Phillip Rivers was at fault. Silly that this is a thing.

I agree it can be hard to support Frank Clark sometimes, but attacking Phillip Rivers (if that even really happened) actually makes it easier for me to cheer for him. Because fuck Phillip Rivers.

If he's annoying because he's a competitor to a fault, sure, but if it's a cheap shot, then Clark is a chump. As we pretty well know.

I don't know. Rivers is due for a few cheap shots. Guy's a bitch.

Rivers is a POS and it's clear as day what happened in the video. The title of the thread makes it sound like there was a huge pile up and Clark was just on the bottom with Rivers punching the shit out of him (which, I couldn't blame him for because Rivers is a complete ass).
Rivers grabs Clarks jersey and Clark just falls on him and then he rolls off and when he's laying on his back with the OL over him you can see him holding the "I'm innocent" hands in the air.
This is awful that it's even a story. Fuck Phillip Rivers.

Not much to talk about here. Cant believe there is an article about this. Rivers is clearly in the wrong here and created the whole thing. San Diego as a whole seem like a bunch of bona fide sissy drama queens. Shamoo and Sea World are still awesome I bet though. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uh5Eigt_dhQ

I assume you didn't see the video, since it's pretty clear all he did was tackle Rivers while his OL kinda stood around not blocking anyone.

Rivers. I watched the video and it looks like he lost his balance and put his hand near Rivers head which is when Rivers seems to grab his jersey. I didn't see anything there so I didn't post it. Garbage attack against Clark.
He is likely going to have to deal with this his whole career. The media and other teams will continue to try to throw him under the bus. I have no faith in Goodell being reputable in reviewing the film. I wouldn't be surprised to see a fine even though I don't think he did anything.

Where's the video?
August 30th, 2015 at 3:58 PM ^
For some reason it won't let me rip the embed from here, but the feed from the game and commentators are all there in this link
Honestly I've watched it several times and I don't see anywhere where he did anything wrong. I specifically looked just for anyone throwing a punch and couldn't find it and still can't see much of anything. This whole thing is getting blown up for no reason other than to spin up more drama. If anything it looks like Rivers deserved one but never got one. And not even the guys on tv said anything at the time through a few replays, so it clearly wasn't focused on in the game.
August 30th, 2015 at 4:00 PM ^
Teh refs are also standing directly over Rivers and Clark and they clearly didn't see anything flag worthy, let alone newsworthy.
August 30th, 2015 at 3:51 PM ^
Is it just me or are the Chargers always crying about something? If the video is the play they are referring to, Frank should be the one who is pissed at Rivers, not the other way around.

I've watched the video a few times and really can't see Clark doing anything, besides being held. Seems like they're trying to make something outta nothing.

"That guy was on top of Philip, and that's our quarterback," Dunlap told the newspaper. "I protect the quarterback at all costs."
Except for, you know, pass blocking when the ball is snapped.

Rivers was mad that Clark pushed down his head unneccessarily at the end of the sack while Rivers was already down, in a preseason game. Rivers then, on his back, proceeded to get into Clark's face and then his tackle came and protected him. I'm not really sure why people are getting on his case since we chastised our o-line for doing nothing when DG got wrecked against Notre Dame.
Clark also immediately put his hands up once Dunlap got involved. It's a little different when it's a 6'9'' man and not your girlfriend.

keep moving, people. Totally generic play.
