Sammy Watkins: Nerd Killer

Submitted by MGoAndy on

Rivals Top 50 recruit and Michigan target Sammy Watkins is featured in a rather strange video of a nerd getting wrecked by athletes over and over again.  Relevant footage at 1:35.

Yes, it's a 90 lb. nerd that he just blindsided, but you have to like the ruthless, nerd crushing killer instinct.  Northwestern doesn't stand a chance.

that emo kid got rocked at the end.

This video is worth watching because at the end of the video a kid with wierd emo hair gets absolutely lit up.

Wow... Watkins did not hold back.

with weird hair.  I just don't really like that kid's hair.  Pretty sure his hair cut came with a free Thursday album.

I would also argue that if I saw someone with Don Draper hair today as pictured above it would be so conservatively retro that it would be weird.  And I would be cool with that.

I must say that is a little disturbing.  He could have (and probably did, from the looks of it) seriously hurt the kid.

What does it say about Watkins that he thinks it's funny to blast an unprotected, 90-pound kid like that?  Yes, Watkins is a teenager, but all the other teenagers that fake tackled the nerd in the video were light on him.

Would you laugh if the nerd was your kid?  Would you still think Watkins's actions were appropriate?  I doubt it.  What if the kid was seriously injured?  Would it still be funny?

In the real world, where I live, Watkins's hit was entirely unwarranted, especially because I highly doubt that the emo kid asked to get blasted in the manner Watkins blasted him.  Indeed, unlike EVERY OTHER KID in that video, Watkins ran right through the emo kid.  This tells me that the emo kid didn't say to the kids doing the hitting, "Pummel the shit out of me."  Instead, he probably said something along the lines of, "Tackle me and make it look real, but don't hurt me."

Sammy Watkins is a football player.  He knows or should know the potentially severe effects a devastating hit like that can have on someone.  He knows or should know that people who are smaller than him and not wearing pads or a helmet are even more susceptible to injuries in these situations.  It doesn't take a bright or remarkable teenager to understand these facts and act accordingly.  In light of that, what he did to the emo kid was wrong.

Nobody is contesting whether the clip is "made up" or not.  The issue is the hit, and the hit was not "made up."

Let me frame this a different way.  Let's say you and I are filming a movie that involves a fight scene.  Before that scene you say, "Punch me in the face; make it look hard, but don't actually punch me hard."  Then let's say the director rolls tape and I purposely deliver a knockout blow.  Would that be funny?  Right?

I submit that the answer to both questions is clearly no.  You gave me permission only to go so far--to "make it look hard" but not to "actually punch...hard."  You did not give me permission to sock the shit out of you.  Therefore, my action in doing so would have exceeded the scope of my authority, and it would be wrong.

This video presents a situation no different from the hypothetical.  Sammy Watkins likely had permission to "hit" the emo kid; he did not likely have permission to sock the shit out of him (and even if he did, he should know better than to sock the shit out of someone in this situation).  By socking the shit out of the emo kid, Watkins exceeded the scope of his (likely) authority, and what he did was wrong.

I like how the emo kid gets up after a few seconds, but if that happened to a world cup athlete they'd be down for twenty-five minutes.

Any kid who thinks, "I wanna make a video with a bunch of athletes knocking me out of my shoes" deserves to be knocked out of his shoes by a bunch of athletes. Mission accomplished twofold: he got knocked out of his shoes by athletes, and I laughed. Hey, at least he was wearing a helmet.

...but Watkins let him off easy.  That was more of a flying hip check.  Imagine what would have happened if that had been a fundamentally sound shoulder tackle with both feet dug in for leverage.  If Watkins had gone full bore, that emo kid might still be lying in a hospital bed somewhere.

I don't know.  If he likes lighting up classmates, Michigan State is going to go after him hard.  I heard they've lost a few in that department, so they need recruits to bring up their numbers.
