Sam Webb on Watkins/Crawford

Submitted by MGoShoe on
As mentioned in Tim's latest Wednesday Recruiting, South Fort Myers (Fla.) High teammates Sammy Watkins (Scout's #3 WR) and Dallas Crawford (Scout's #29 CB) attended the Spring Game. According to Sam Webb's latest in the Detroit News, they both came away with a favorable impression and will likely add Michigan to their list of official visits. It turns out their coach has a Michigan connection as his uncle Rich Hahn played on Michigan's 1964 Rose Bowl team. They appear to be saying all the right things that would make us think that there's a chance they would spurn the Florida teams and head north.
"Academics first," Crawford said. "Building a relationship with the coaches, the players, and playing time. Those are the biggest factors." "First, great academics," echoed Watkins. "I'm looking for that, and then the team where I fit at with their schemes the best and where I feel comfortable at." One factor both say won't play much of a role in their decisions is distance from home. "I do not really have a preference," insisted Crawford. "It is wherever I feel comfortable. If it is in the South, it is in the South, but it is near Canada like up here, then it is near Canada." Watkins feels similarly. "I think I can handle it," he said. "It's the game of football. You're going to go other places and you're going to get the same weather."
Michigan's recruiting philosophy continues to stress the positive.
Both players have tentatively added Michigan to their official visit lists. According to [Coach] Redhead, their positive visit experience -- especially their interaction with the coaches -- is the major reason why. "Michigan did not say, 'We're going to put you here and I promise you that you are going to play,'" Redhead said. "They never said any of that. They are 100 percent honest, which is good. "I've known a few of them (the coaches) for a long time from when they were in Florida coaching. It is very, very positive. They just said if you are willing to work, willing to do the right thing, and play hard, you're going to have a good shot of playing. That's all that you can ask. In my position as their coach, just be honest with them upfront and help them make a well informed decision."
And they may end up being a package deal.
"We're looking to make it happen," Crawford said regarding the possibility of attending the same school. "We want it to happen, but if it does not, then it does not. We've just got to do what's best for each of us."

The fact that Coach Rodriguez can still get interest from these top flight recruits despite his W/L record is really a testament to how great a recruiter he is. I can't wait to see the level of talent he will be able to get once he starts winning here.

there's an inference--likely unintended--that the Florida schools don't feature strong academics. UF is a little different, being the #15 public ranked U by US News & etc. W. Vanderbilt UF is the only school that would qualify for the B10 academically. Also--beyond the weather--people are a little mystified by the attraction of Florida, but both Gainesville and Tallahassee are extremely nice towns--Tallahassee is ranked above A2 as a general overall great place to live in one online source I chanced on a while back. There's also an interesting kind of love/hate for Michigan at UF, because the president--Bernie Machen--worked at UM but came away w. a huge chip on his shoulder (politics have something to do w. this). They aim to BE UM, one of my profs once told me, and Machen has tweaked the UM repeatedly, including in his comments when UF went to the championship game. And RichRod seemed to be hinting lately that UF was using negative recruiting against him. . . I just put this out there because the fact that these kids are looking for strong academics doesn't necessarily rule UF out in most kids' or parents' minds.

...was (by definition) yours. I did not intend to imply that there's anything wrong with UF's academics. That said, the fact that both kids mentioned academics so prominently is likely a positive development for Michigan as U-M clearly features strong academics. And yes, most mentions of academics by top tier recruits should be taken with two grains of salt.

that when someone brings a little knowledge to the table in a positive way they end up getting negged. Dumb. I've just seen many posters go WTF Florida often enough to think a little info might not hurt 'em. I guess the internets are the wrong place to go looking for rational, though.

...tend to get canceled out. Most people know UF is a good school, but among the best public universities that also have traditonally strong athletic departments, IME there's a big drop off from the rarified air of UC-Berkeley, UVA, UCLA, U-M and UNC to the rest. That distinction is only important to the very rare recruit. Regarding your last sentence, that's generally true, but you find it here a hell of a lot more than you do most other places.

Agreed. I lived in Tallahassee for a year. True, it was 15 years ago but Tallahassee is no Ann Arbor. The only way it ranks over A2 in best places to live is in the weather category (and even then it's unbearably hot there in the summer).

There's criteria for success that doesn't correlate to the rankings. Most students could be sucessful at most colleges if they apply themselves to the offerings. The fact is and has been, since I attended at least, that a BA or BS from Mich tells the world that; you can compete, you can hang 10 on a bell curve and that you can integrate at a large institution. Sounds like the same can be said of athletes wrt football at least in the RR era. I like the honesty and openness of the RR era. This recruiting tack is going to and has already served Michigan well. I have friends that teach at Florida. It's big and there are issues there like any other school. I do think Michigan has more classes and breadth of subject to offer the UG. Unfortunately it is a long row to hoe to take advantage of that and be successful in athletics as well. I'm really impressed with the scholar athletes that we have been able to attract and the success they have achieved (Leach, Omahmeh, Roh and Mesko - just to name a few.) This type of player is not new to Mich - Stephan Humphries put the smack down on fellow pre-med students when I was in school. I do think this is one of RR's recruiting niches though and I am glad to see him sell it positively.

and am finishing a doctorate at UF. Michigan is by far the finer school, in my opinion. (Also, Florida is hurting financially and it's hard to see the blood flow stopping anytime soon, while M's endowment grows and grows.) And Ann Arbor is a miles cooler place to anyone who cares about culture than Gainesville (or Tallahassee, for that matter, though Tally is prettier). I love the fact that RR can sell academics, too. I was just trying to supply some perspective. . .

...1964 finds us on the cusp of a significant cultural shift. This is inexact, but based on a simple review of official team photos from 1961 to 1970, the number of African-Americans on the Michigan football team did this:
YearAA Team Members in PhotoTeam Members in Photo%
19612395.1%
19622375.4%
196343611.1%
196463915.4%
196574316.3%
1966104323.3%
196763915.4%
1968125621.4%
1969137816.7%
1970186826.5%
Not a surprise, but the decade of the '60s saw a clear trend toward more African-Americans on the Michigan football team.
