This board is quick to bash someone for a bad post, so let me compliment you on a good one. You gave enough detail to give people the gist of the story but avoiding giving away content from Sam to people who didn't listen. Well done sir.

I gotta ask--are you any kin to Rick?
Wish I could get their podcasts to work on my Android phone.... *sigh*
i keep waiting for it to load on my droid thinking maybe just maybe it will happen...but knowing deep down it wont. (similar to brionte dunn recruitment)
Sam and Ira were talking about the new iPhone app and noting that they both have Droid phones. I think they said a Droid app is in the works although that may only be for live streaming.
I use the Listen app (Google? ) subscribe to WTKA, & download the podcasts to listen to
What problems are you having? This is the method I came up with and it works great:
Install Google Listen on your android. Once you have logged in, it should add a "Listen Subscriptions" section to your Google Reader account. So go to Google Reader (www.google.com/reader/) on a computer and click "Subscribe" and enter the url: http://wtka.podhoster.com/rss/3088/
This should subscribe you to the podcast mp3's. In Google Listen, its just a matter of navigating to the wtka podcasts under My Subscriptions and playing the podcasts. The one downside is that the podcasts can be named semi weirdly, and they are uploaded in random orders. So when I start listening, I go through the podcasts and starting with track one and going through to the last track I click "add to queue" and this basically creates a playlist.
Thank you. I'll give that a shot after work today.
Brionte's recruitment is like Dee Hart's?
Long time flirtation with UM throughout the season
Both Out of State
We need Wright so bad! Im so excited I cant wait for MORE defense! I wish we would go after another interior DL. Then I would take a WR and an OL.
In the 2012 class Pipkins, Strobel, Godin and Wormley could eventually play either the nose or 3 tech. Plus, there are a lot more guys on the current roster for D-line spots than we're probably thinking of. I'm pretty sure the team doesn't need any more.
I would say Pipkens is destined for the nose rather than the 3-tech especially with the company he's keeping. Out of the other 3 you listed, Godin is built closer to a 3-tech, whereas Wormley is close to the 5-tech.
Having seen Strobel in person, he definitely is not built to be a 3 or 1-tech, he still almost has a basketball player build. With a college weight program he could easily develop nicely into a 5-tech but it would take a pre-Barwis Brandon Graham effort for him to become a 3 or 1 tech.
Spelling error. It's MOAR defense!
Next year we need to grab a big time LB. Immediate playing time wont work for us for recruiting next year. Start handing out offers to these elite defensive players now.
this upcoming class has a few BIG TIME LBs right? Joe Bolden and James Ross alone are 2 of the highest ranked in the country with every recruiting service. RJS is very highly ranked on most as well and Ringer is even ranked pretty well too.
yeah i agree, i love LBs and any big one we can get is a great plus. but the class coming in is going to be great defensively. Bolden will play from day 1 i think, and Ross will probably get a chance to play a lot too.
That post was a little surprising to me as well. I'd say that LB is the least of our recruiting worries going into next year...
Yeah I know our 2012 linebackers are awesome. I hope they have the speed to get to their coverage spots. I know that was one of issues this year. As for Dunn, I think we consider him Ohio all the way. We have Fitz and the 2013 class will address the offense a little more. I just hope that the coaches lock wright up.
I don't think the speed of our linebackers was really an issue this year.
I have to disagree, especially in regard to Morgan, his complete lack of speed is a major liability.
I think his speed was an issue against guys like Braxton Miller, and I don't know how many inside linebackers you'll find who can keep up with Braxton Miller.
Regardless, I think Morgan will be a MIKE once Demens graduates and, therefore, his foot speed will be even less of an issue.
Perhaps lack of speed is an issue, but let's also remember Morgan played as a freshman. Obviously he's not going to make a dramatic improvement in speed, but this kid is a good ballplayer who will get on the field because he's got great instincts and he understands the game. I see him improving in his ability to diagnose plays more quickly, improving on his angles, and -- as the above poster speculates -- eventually moving to the inside. I think he'll play there and play well.
That doesn't mean he'll be out there every play. One of Mattison's stated goals is to have 18-20 players who can rotate and not suffer any dropoff. But I like Morgan. He's a physical player and I would not overreact to how he looked against Braxton Miller in his freshman year.
is not very fast, but he is a middle linebacker of the future...he is out of position imo but faired very well for his age and the type of recruit he was. the kid has great ability. smart cookie.
Plus Morgan as a true freshman, RS Frosh Antonio Poole, and 1st-year LB-ish types in Beyer, Clark. (I sure wish Kellen Jones would've worked out in the list, too).
This year's and next year's class (Ross, RJS, Bolden, Ringer) will give us a nice 2-deep over the next few years. You obviously don't turn down a stud LB prospect in 2013's class, but I don't think it's a desperate position of need for the '13 class.
We've already handed out 30 offers for next year.
Would be a great pick up, but I think we cannot let it make or break this class. If we continue to make progress like this on the O-line that should make good runners look great. Games are won in the trenches and I love some of the big nasties we have got on both sides of the ball in this class.
Don't get me wrong, he has offers from us, ND, Wisconsin and other major schools--but for a guy with high elite grades from a lot of the services, you aren't seeing the Bama's, SC's, LSU's OK's of the world offering him. Just seems curious given that other players at that position with lower grades have those kind of offers.
If they don't get Dunn in this class, I can see Hoke pooping gold and making Ty Issac their top priority next years class.
Hoke builds it, they will come!!
Isaac might be better. He would have good timing of coming in during Fitz' final year then take over the following...
If no Brionte and Ty Isaacs comes how many records do you think he can take out behind the line that will be assembled?
Is it just me, or does "Ty Issac" sound like the name of a Michigan RB. Not sure if that makes sense but the name just fits the mold perfectly for me.
Without giving away too much of Sam's comments, it is my personal view that Dunn will end up having a great career blocking for Braxton Miller at OSU. The kid loves OSU like many of us grew up loving Michigan. Add to that the fact that he does seem to be pretty starry-eyed by Urban (and, as a 17 year old, who wouldn't be - the guy is has 2 NC rings, and is probably one of the hottest coaches in the country).
In the end, this is not a smart choice, if his goal is to play in the NFL, but it may work out for him. I would think that he would take a look at our insane OL recruiting hall - made up almost entirely of 4-5* giants - and realize that running behind these guys (along with a stud QB like Morris to force safeties to play off the line) for most of his career could land him a possible Heisman, and a likely NFL career. But, kid is 17 and heart often trumps head for the young.
Are these round ups pay walled?
No they are not. You can listen to them anytime. I would recommend listening to them if you want some decent information on recruits, especially if you can't wait until Ace does his weekly update.
Dunn can't fight the feeling. A little bit of a sales pitch is all it took from Urban to convince Dunn to play in the spread. Not a bit deal, the kid's dream school is OSU.
it is a conflict between the head and the heart. On one hand, he is a BIG OSU fan. He grew up on OSU football. Just like Sam said in his post, can you imagine growing up following Michigan and then being faced with the choice of going to the school that you grew up following or going to your school's arch rival? It would be tough for sure. Sheeeeeeeeeeeet, that would be tough. Not to mention, you have the second coming (at least according to all the media) as your head coach.
Obviously, playing behind a talented behemoth O-line in a pro-style, RB-friendly, system, under a RB coach that put plenty of guys into the NFL, would seem better for one's pro prospects, but if he is as talented as every recruiting guru seems to think, and he develops at the college level, he will get to the NFL regardless where he ends up for college. In addition to Michigan's offense/coaching, I think he is also tempted by Michigan because some of his close friends, and his cousin, are going to end up there.
Academics and the setting should be another reason. Who the hell would want to spend 4 years in Columbus? Ann Arbor is, hands down, way better. No argument.
That's the way I read it as well. Apparently Hoke and co. are still visiting tomorrow, but having Dunn dump his official with Kalis and go to OSU this weekend is a pretty good indication of where he's going to end up.
I'm sure Ohio fans thought kinda the same thing when he was standing on our sidelines while we played them (the team he was committed to)
but that was pre-urban - is seems like since he received his phone call from Urban, he has shifted back to OSU.
Oh well. I would love to get this kid on the team, as he perfectly fits where our offense will end up, but if he doesn't come here, we will be fine with Fitz, Hayes ans Rawls. Plus, it allows us to sell an open depth chart to a top 2013 back. That said, I would really like to get Dunn, both for the fact that he looks to be awesome and to keep him away from OSU.
One thing I wonder about with Hayes is whether he will remain an RB or move to slot receiver. I imagine he'll want to play whatever position gets him on the field the soonest, but it would not surprise me to see him out there as a WR.
Help me understand why everyone is drooling over Dunn so much. We have higher rated recruits coming in who aren't getting near the love that Dunn is. I understand that RB is a very important skill position, and that we haven't had a super recruit at RB in a while, but it's not like he's the second coming of Adrian Peterson. Plus, Fitz looked fantastic down the stretch, and seems like he almost has breakaway speed, something that Dunn apparently lacks.
I just don't get it, other than the joy of stealing an OH stud from OSU.
In my opinion he is a highly rated running back that would be a good compliment to Fitz and even Denard. He is a powerful runner with pretty good size and speed. Fitz showed us his ability to make guys miss and get into the open field, but Dunn would be a guy that would be able to pound the ball and get the tough yards. I would be upset if Dunn sticks with Ohio, but I won't take it to heart as that is part of the game.
he's a beast. A shiftier version of A-Train, someone we don't want to play against. Any 4 or 5 star studs that commit to us from Ohio means we won't have to play against them, if they choose the Buckeyes.
From what I can tell, he's pretty much exactly A-Train, but with maybe a touch less top-end speed. Dunn has great balance and can break tackles, but I wouldn't characterize him as shifty. In his day, Thomas was actually rated higher as a recruit than Dunn is.
If you ask me, Dunn looks like a really good recruit, but is a cut or two below surefire hellbeasts like Marcus Lattimore and Trent Richardson. I'd still love to have him come to Ann Arbor, obviously, but he's not a game-changing type recruit, IME.
The real reason that Michigan fans are so interested in him is probably that it's a chance to steal a good player from OSU, but I don't think Michigan fans think he'll necessarily be a superstar. Personally, I think he looks like Anthony Thomas...who was a solid running back but not a legend. He racked up a lot of career rushing yards, but that was partly because he played consistently over his four years.
I was just as impressed with Wes Brown. Dunn would be a very nice recruit, but not a game changer.
Hopefully the kid thinks about his future. If you want to study igloo architecture, you can't pick Arizona State.
Well, Phoenix was the home of Frank Lloyd Wright, and ASU has a lot of influence from him. Might not be the worst place...
Taliesin West was Frank Lloyd Wright's winter home/studio.
Very cool place, would recommend the tour if not done. Also, stay at the Arizona Biltmore if you like that style of architecture.
Waaaay OT, of course
I let the first Wright is an AZ thing go, but now have to stand up for Oak Park, IL and point out that was ground zero for him and his prarie style. AND he ate his hot dogs with all sorts of tomatoes and relish and shit, and ate nothing but deep dish. Chicago woo!
Good recommendation, as I've actually stayed at the Arizona Biltmore. Very nice place, and cool architecture as well.
I like Dunn a lot based on the clips I've seen. I think he looks like a guy who could help wear a defense out with the violence of his running style. He'd also be a very nice threat to have on 3rd & 1...I'd want him a great deal even if his other choice was Florida, though stealing him from OSU does of course make the idea of getting him all the better.
that linebackers are not a huge need. Not only with the guys coming in this class I think some guys stepped up this year who will not just hand over there starting jobs. More important than recruits is that in year one these coaches showed they can coach kids up. That being said i think we can expect more recruits to develope into stars and less complete bust.
I just think we are too far behind now, and this recent development sealed the bag. Whatever, he is really good, but we got Fitz for now and RBs don't have to sit and develop as long as many other positions. Hopefully we get some insane backs next year. Also when we got the line that we do coming in, I could probably run behind them for 4 ypc. At least that is what I am hoping for.
The sheer lack of depth we have on the O-line it would not be the end of the world if we used that schollie for another O-lineman.
I think the reason why people on this board are obsessed with Dunn is because of the flip of Kalis and the fact that Ohio's recruits are open game. Plus we all know that Hoke has pursued very hard after Dunn and for a very long time. His heart is at OSU so thats where he will end up.
I mean it speaks major volume as to the recruiting efforts that these coaches are putting forward. A guy who has grown up a buckeye, committed to the buckeyes long ago, and these coaches are selling Michigan that well, that the kid steps back and not only re thinks his committment, but stands on the sidelines of that schools rival, in the biggest game of the year for both schools........I find that just a"maize"ing
Nobody should spend even five seconds feeling bad when he signs with OSU. If lightning strikes and he comes up to A2, that's more frosting on an already heavily frosted cake. I'd rather have another highly-rated OL, DB, or LB anyhow.
Eh we are pretty set at LB for this class. But I wouldn't mind taking a 5* OL (Garnett) or DB (Wright) if we miss out on Dunn. If we do miss out on Dunn, we have to recruit Ty Issacs, etc. hard next year.
I dunno guys, but Id rather have Wright over Dunn. Itd be nice to get both, but Id be more upset if we didnt land Yuri. He is a big, physical corner, and we need those. We have nice depth in the secondary already, but damn, imagine having Wright and Countess lock down WRs for the next 3+ years.
I aslo think Ty Issac might be a better prospect too. So, like some of you have mentioned, itd def would not be a huge loss if Dunn went to osu. I think we all enamored with the fact that we could potentially steal another big recruit from the bad guys. That is great and all, but Id rather have guys that 100% want to be a Michigan Wolverine. Plus, if Dunn does commit to them, we could hopefully have room for another OL.
Well glass half full missing Dunn gives an extra spot to wait for Diggs/Diamond/Garnett (5 stars)
I'm just getting really tired of the Brionte mania, and I'm really sick of seeing a player's recruitment turning into a competition between fanbases and somehow being turned into a signal of progress.
I want people to remember some things:
1. Brionte is gonna pick what he feels is best for him, and he is going to incorporate factors into his decision that has nothing to do with the style, strength, or direction of the football team.
2. Michigan is recruiting at a level that will bring talent to the HB position. Getting worked up over the relative talents of Wes Brown, Greg Garmon, Brionte Dunn, Ty Isaacs, or whatever HB commits Michigan brings in over the next couple seasons is ridiculous. This is doubly true with the quality of OL commits they have coming in and with the flashes Rawls showed in his limited time.
3. Urban Meyer will not be bringing along Dan Mullen, who is a spread QB guru. Florida's offense collapsed when Mullen left, and he was the QB coach that helped turn Alex Smith into a dominant college quarterback. This is not a "Meyer will fail" point; Meyer is very likely to succeed without him. What this does mean is that it is way too premature to determine that Dunn will not play a substantial role in Meyer's offense. When you consider that spread option teams generally look for a inside/edge compatibility between their QB and HB, it stands to reason that Braxton Miller will take on the Percy Harvin edge threat role, and Dunn could take on the interior Tim Tebow rushing role.
4. Al Borges has made very dangerous 1000 yard rushers out of his last two backs, Hillman and Toussaint. These two backs are almost identical: 5'10, 180lbs, very shifty, with a low center of gravity, and good speed. They are not much like Brionte Dunn.
My advice would be: 1. Don't get your hopes up too far. 2. Don't worry about it too much.
This is Michigan fergodssakes!
I echo your same sentiment. I think folks are forgetting that months ago this kid was a pleasant surprise in regards to his interest and would be considered a "bonus." By no means is Dunn a make or break recruit for this class. Sure, he is an excellent talent and running back is a position that good depth is necessary, but if he wasn't to land, this would not set the program back (see: 2008 QB).
If Dunn doesn't commit, at the very least it does not raise any depth questions with any future recruits who perhaps don't want to wait behind him, like a Ty Issac or Wyatt Shallman (I think I remember reading here that the coaches offered him as a RB).
Fitz is only a sophomore and we still have Rawls and Hayes in waiting. So we're set for now and can focus on 2013 for a running backs. Let's get another haas for the trenches. I'd love to land Garnett.
I guess I'll play spoiler:
Dunn is taking an official to Ohio this weekend and could not succeed in convincing Kalis to join him.
This makes sense.
He came to Michigan two weekends in a row (right? Nebraska and Ohio games?) and got in home visits by an assistant and our head coach. He knows our pitch. He's seen us win in person. He saw the rivalry from our perspective.
Now it's Urban Meyer's turn.
Slight correction, he will get an in home by Coach Hoke. It is scheduled for tomorrow, last I knew.
You have 6666 mgopoints. I am honored that you chose to correct me with that post.
Ed: Now it's 6667 and I have to edit this post and make it useful and relevant.
It's only fair and fitting that the last voice in Dunn's head comes from the school he grew up wanting to attend and their new coach that is trying to harden a soft commitment. I am not at all worried that Hoke won't be the latest person in his ear and would have been very surprised in that instance. The news of Dunn taking an OV to OSU after Hoke's visit isn't a good or a bad thing.
I am not sure if you are being sarcastic or not, but you are welcome. Nice picture by the way. I uploaded a new one, but is not showing for some reason. Weird too since I did it yesterday and on my iPad at home it showed up just fine while on the internet.
Edit: Now it is showing up.
Michigan will be his last official, mid-December, per @TomVH
Actually, TomVH said that he was surprised Dunn visited OSU this weekend instead of UM & that IF he visits the following weekend that will be more telling.
My personal opinion, after the switch this weekend; things are not looking good for us. From the ESPN premium info, it sounds like the kid is truly confused and Meyer is whispering sweet nothings in his ear that he wants to believe...
If that holds true, that would be a good sign, IMO.
Didn't Dunn attend THE GAME on an official as our guest and stand on Michigan's sideline in full OSU gear? That tells you all you need to know IMO. Who comes in on an official and rocks the enemy opposing team's stuff? GO BLUE!
No, he attended the game in like a flannal shirt or something, then took his picuture on the M with Dymonte Thomas and Shane Morris, which becaame his twitter profile picture.
I believe that was after the Nebraska game.
The thing with Dunn for me is not how he will affect Michigan whether he comes or goes, but just the satisfaction of Ohio not getting him. I feel the same with Gunner Kiel and ND. We don't need him, but I just want him to go anywhere other than ND. Does that make me a bad person?
Wouldn't matter much if he went to ND... if the way Christ and Rees turned out is any indication
It will still make my ND friend completely insufferable from signing day until they lose to Michigan in South Bend. And, unfortunately, the ND game is kind of late next year, I believe.
I just looked up the St. Edwards High School profile on Rivals to check out the tight end that Sam was talking about - and wow! I knew St Edwards was a power house but their line is incredible.
Sam Gant TE 6'6" 240 lbs - committed to Boston College
Tyler Orlosky OL 6'4" 290 lbs - committed to West Virginia
Kyle Kalis OL 6'5" 302 lbs - comitted to Michigan
Sean Connelly OL 6'7" 290 lbs - offers from MAC level schools
Not to mention:
Greg Kuhar DL 6'3" 265 lbs - committed to Northwestern
All those bigs on one high school team is crazy!
It's "Grant" not Gant.
that none of these players are staying in ohio? And tsio's line is not great, nor deep.
The only one with an OSU offer is Kalis, and the only options other than OSU are MAC schools or Cincinnati. It's not surprising that they're leaving Ohio.
Regardless of what Dunn does, virtually anyone we throw out there at running back is going to do pretty well because of the offensive line we'll have.
Does Kalis redshirt?
Yes. I don't think he's good enough to start, and there's no reason to play an OL if he's just a backup. They'll be able to get backup snaps out of Mealer, Miller, etc.
Adrian Arrington...but faster. Boom Fred Jackson'd!
Did Pittman decommit from MSU? I thought I heard he is gonna visit Ohio.
He is ike Dunn but for msu and ohio. committed but seeing what its like else where. Pittman might want to stay with msu via the fact noah spence is showing uber interest in ohio. if Michigan didn't have the oline coming in that they do, I would fear for Devin and Shanes lifes. Spence and Washington on the same line is going to be impressive ( if Spence goes to Ohio)
I'm not sure why there are so many negative Nancys in regards to Dunn's recruitment. He visited UM our last two games, we're in great shame folks. I don't see his official to Ohio this weekend as a negative sign at all. Hoke visits thursday and makes his pitch, then he'll hear Urban's pitch and realize it sucks. Then he comes back to AA for his last official visit, Hoke n crew will have the last shot to close him. There's a saying in sales that the first person to speak loses. Well, that's Urban Meyer, Hoke will close the deal. This sets up perfectly for UM IMO. #notconcernedwithohio
I would be less of a negative Nancy IF Dunn had a scheduled Michigan OV next weekend. There is no guarantee he will be coming back to A2 after his weekend in CBus.
DUNN will be a Buckeye
