Sam Webb: Michigan Targeting a Committed B1G QB

Submitted by KennyGfanLMAO on

In the most recent MGoVideo, Sam Webb reported that Michigan is looking for another quarterback for this class and is targeting a quarterback who is already commited to another B1G school. He said the player "doesn't want his name out there yet, but Michigan is all over him, and the player is certainly reciprocating the interest."

I figured since it has been a slow day so far on the blog, we could speculate on which quarterback Harbaugh and company are going after. One of the higher rated QB's committed to a B1G school is OSU commit, Torrance Gibson. Any chance he is the mystery player?

Discussion time!

I haven't watched senior film to re-rank them (and I generally won't), but I did watch his. I honestly have no clue why he doesn't have more offers. Personally, I hope the coaching staff reaches out to him. He de-committed from SMU, maybe because they went 1-11, but now he seems to be in a bit of a No Man's Land. I've pinged a couple recruiting people, and they haven't been able to give me a good answer, either.

It was based on how well I thought the player would fit in with Hoke's desired offense. So there's some wiggle room in there for a different system. With the way Harbaugh used Kaepernick and others as more dual-threat guys (whereas Hoke seemed reluctant), I would probably move some of those guys around a little bit.

It has to be an Ohio St commit thus not wanting his name mentioned. The death threats would be all over the twitterverse if their name was to be leaked.

This is going to be very interesting going forward. Gibson would be a serious kick in the dong. I like it!

2015 B1G QB commits, non Early Enrollees

Ohio State: Torrance Gibson (DUAL, FL, 4*, 74th overall); Joe Burrow (DUAL, OH, 3*, 379th)

Penn State: none

Nebraska: none

Wisconsin: Austin Kafentzis (DUAL, UT, 3*, 529th); Alex Hornibrook (PRO, PA, 3*, NR);

Michigan State: Brian Lewerke (PRO, AZ, 3*, 413th)

Northwestern: Lloyd Yates (DUAL, IL, 3*, NR)

Indiana: Austin King (PRO, GA, 3*, 790th); Andre Brown (DUAL, GA, 3*, NR)

Maryland: Gage Shaffer (PRO, WV, 3*, NR)

Illinois: Jimmy Fitzgerald (PRO, IL, 3*, 911th)

Iowa: Ryan Boyle (DUAL, IA, 3*, 930th)

Purdue: none

Minnesota: Demry Croft (DUAL, IL, 3*, 798th)

Rutgers: Michael Dare (PRO, NJ, 3*, 684th)

Of those, I can only remember the following prior Michigan connections:

-Torrance Gibson named us to an early top-15 (we were 13th or 14th iirc)

-Brian Lewerke was a name that was being floated around as a QB candidate shortly before Malzone was offered, I think he had professed some nominal level of interest

-Ditto Jimmy Fitzgerald, although I think he was just sort of a name rather than a guy who was actually contacted/pursued by the old staff

-Austin Kafentzis is a name that rings a bell for me, but I don't believe we ever pursued him.

with Harbaugh. Smart, close family, good size, very good passer, decent runner, super competitive (he cried and stated disgust with 2nd place in Ohio Div III) - almost Andrew Luckish. And UM is clearly diving into Ohio with offers the last few days.

Bellomy is one of the best QBs in the country during practice.  Unfortunately for him Gardner and Morris were slightly better so he hasn't seen the field much.

Just wait til he gets a chance.  He's like Cardale just a little bit faster and stronger.

Ok. Disclosure...I know the Bellomy family on a personal level, and they are great people. I know that fans are down on him, based on the Nebraska game, and recent helmet issue, and I understand that. However, I am hearing that Russell is fired up and throwing the ball really well in offseason workouts. He just wants a chance to compete. He has had some really bad luck..thrown to wolves against Alabama freshman year, then a kidney injury, followed by an ACL the following year. He just wants a chance to compete. I hope with JH the best man starts regardless of name, stars, or hype.

I sooo hope it one from either ohio or msmoo. That would make me very happy. Have had to work with a douchy ohio fan all week and I really need some smack talk ammo. Fuck him and all the suckeye gear he has worn all week.

The OSU quarterback's were all tops in their respective classes coming into college. They would likely do well wherever they ended up. The same could said for Andrew Luck, especially so. Quarterbacks like Luck come around once in a blue moon. God made him what he is, not Harbaugh. That's not to say Harbaugh is not a good quarterback coach. Just saying, folks tend to get a little carried away making coaching conclusions when the athlete themselves are not considered in the equation.

Honestly, what Urban has done with Cardale is truly amazing. I watched him play in Ohio State's spring game last year and Jones was unbelievably incompetent. To then have him beating Alabama and Oregon just completely boggles. It's also another pretty good piece of evidence that coaching >>> measurables at the QB position.

^^^^Yes this
As much as we all hate Urban, he's a great coach. His system WORKS.
Glad we got Harbaugh...it'll be a challenge to unseat Ohio based on what they have built now. I have no doubt they'll be beatable. We just have to instill the hatred and intensity into the team. An unmatched hatred and intensity, that only Jim Harbaugh can teach...

Could be OSU QB commit Joe Burrow. Apparently there was friction between him and Tim Beck, which is why he never considered Nebraska. He was reportedly set to meet with Urban and Beck this week, probably to discuss some things about the Beck hire.

harbaugh understands the importance of a mobile qb. luck, smith, kaepernick. hell, even he himself was quite the scrambler. burrow would be a nice steal.

Not sure if this was posted anywhere else, but Jake Ryan won the Tillman Award at the Shrine Game for his character. The award was presented last night.
