Per Sam Webb: Jerry Montgomery leaving for Oklahoma
https://twitter.com/SamWebb77/status/305411332541390848
Apparently, Jerry Montgomery has left for Oklahoma...he was our primary recruiter for our three current commitments.
From the Scout article that isn't paywalled: "Contract details weren’t available at press time, but sources indicate that Michigan offered a competitive compensation package to Montgomery, but ultimately he felt the opportunity at Oklahoma was clearly one he couldn’t pass up."
I'm guessing they made him recruiting coordinator, which is something we couldn't match with Hecklinski here.

Good luck coach, hopefully you will be back in the future.

Didnt wanna see him go, but he has to do whats best for him. Bad news nonetheless.

I'm going to be pissed if I ever find out Oklahoma outbid us when the athletic department made 7 million dollars in profit last year.
February 23rd, 2013 at 4:08 PM ^
I'm sure Dave Brandon's first priority is to make sure he doesn't piss off UMxWolverines.

It damn well better be!

But what if OU offered a lot and we didn't match because he didn't think he was worth it? I know we all think our coaches are the best, but what if Hoke and DB sat down and decided there were better coaches out there for 250k than Montgomery? I'm not saying that's the case, but sometime employers don't match offers on purpose, and not because they're cheap.

Cheap ass Michigan

Informative

All that B1G expansion/TV money and we can't afford to keep our D-Line coach? It seems like Brian was right. DB will use the extra cash for useless non-revenue sports and building an indoor rowing facility.

Go away Phil.

the write-up on scout says this:
sources indicate that Michigan offered a competitive compensation package to Montgomery, but ultimately he felt the opportunity at Oklahoma was clearly one he couldn’t pass up.
I think people above may be right about him just getting the chance to have the D-line to himself. Right now I feel like they're basically splitting 4 positions amongst 3 coaches. Maybe OU also sprinkled a DC-in-waiting or a co-DC in there too

Speculating, then I can see it. But Norman isn't Ann Arbor. While Norman is probably the best city in Oklahoma, it pales in comparison to Ann Arbor. Norman and especially Oklahoma summers just suck out loud. And then there is the red dirt...

Ever think that he wasnt carrying hus weight in Mattisons eyes? Assumptions go both ways folks. And I wasnt happy with the DL this year.

The hell, man.

I clicked on the panic button, the more you click, the more it impresses.

The most awesome thing, ever.

Thank you
February 23rd, 2013 at 3:35 PM ^
Yeah, looks like no Cole commitment this weekend. Why does it seem like Montgomery was recruiting every single big time recruit we are in on?
February 23rd, 2013 at 3:37 PM ^
I don't understand this, because
1.) Montgomery will most likely only be in charge of DT's at Oklahoma
2.) Michigan offered him a "competitive compensation package"
3.) He could be in line for the DC job when Mattison retires
4.) Stoops is going to be on the hot seat soon if he doesn't start winning big games/win the (weakening) Big 12.
February 23rd, 2013 at 3:42 PM ^
According to the Beave, he was only in charge of the 3-techs and 5-techs at Michigan.
February 23rd, 2013 at 3:45 PM ^
Yeah, that's what I've heard too. But I really can't see this as more of a lateral move...if he had full control of the DL at OU, then ok. But it's looking like he won't, and we know money was no issue (in the Scout article)....
February 23rd, 2013 at 4:01 PM ^
Apparently OU offered him Recruiting coordinator responsibilities, which can be a great way to build a resume towards becoming a head coach. Michigan couldn;t match that as they already have two doing that job so it makes sense for him to move and at least he's moving now when there is more than enough time to find a replacement and adress recruit relationships.

Hire Mike Hart.
February 23rd, 2013 at 3:52 PM ^
Mike hart played running back
February 23rd, 2013 at 3:54 PM ^
Point?
February 23rd, 2013 at 4:11 PM ^
Are you sure?
February 23rd, 2013 at 3:55 PM ^
Why Hart over Campbell?
February 23rd, 2013 at 4:13 PM ^
I like heart jokes more than soup jokes.
February 23rd, 2013 at 3:58 PM ^
I am 100% in favor of this.
February 23rd, 2013 at 4:21 PM ^
To coach defense?
February 23rd, 2013 at 3:39 PM ^
I'm wondering if Montgomery sees a clearer path to becoming a DC at Oklahoma than at Michigan. He has Mallory to compete with here. This could be a good career move if his intent is to climb the coaching ranks.
And then, who knows, maybe he returns to Michigan as HC when Hoke is finished here.
February 23rd, 2013 at 3:50 PM ^
I don't want a quitter back. Definitely not as a head coach. Steady in Oklahoma and get torched by okst for all I care
February 23rd, 2013 at 4:04 PM ^
Didn't Hoke leave and then come back? I'm okay with how that turned out for us.
February 23rd, 2013 at 4:07 PM ^
Especially if they have ever left for ND. Mattison should just leave now, right?
He's young. He saw an opportunity for himself and his family. I doubt he ran into Hoke's office and called him names, he might decide to walk back to Michigan in time.
February 23rd, 2013 at 4:43 PM ^
You can't find many coaches thse days who spent their entire career at one place. The only one that comes to my mind is Joe Paterno.
As others have pointed out, Brady Hoke coached at other schools, leaving Michigan to coach at Ball State. So did Gary Moeller, who left Michigan in the late seventies for Illinois before coming back.
February 23rd, 2013 at 4:08 PM ^
Mike Stoops is the DC at Oklahoma. Unless he leaves for a head coaching job, Montgomery has no chance of moving up. Also, this leaves us with Fred Jackson as the only non-white coach on the team. Not good...
February 23rd, 2013 at 3:39 PM ^
But he is just a position coach and good recruiter. I have never heard of a program going into a downward spiral because a position coach left. Good luck to him and I am confident we will hire a solid replacement.
February 23rd, 2013 at 3:42 PM ^
How is this Dave Brandon's fault?
Assistant coaches are always going to leave. We've been blessed. Let's just hope we find a replacement that is as good or better.
Go throw a bunch of money at Tosh Lupoi! #dreaming
February 23rd, 2013 at 3:56 PM ^
It's his fault because he chose to be cheap
February 23rd, 2013 at 7:44 PM ^
How the fuck do you know? Reveal your information and source or be gone.
I'm willing to bet that Brandon did whatever Hoke and/or Mattison asked him to do, within reason.
February 23rd, 2013 at 3:42 PM ^
...and maize n' blue through and through. Mike Hart is the guy.
February 23rd, 2013 at 7:22 PM ^
Well Hart might not know much about coaching defense, but he sure wouldn't be worse than GERG
February 23rd, 2013 at 3:43 PM ^
Bring ron english back..hes only across he street..
February 23rd, 2013 at 3:47 PM ^
Fuck Oklahoma.
February 23rd, 2013 at 3:48 PM ^
Well, crapballs.
February 23rd, 2013 at 3:51 PM ^
Soup Campbell or Mike Hart would both be solid choices. Coach Jackson said Mike Hart would be the a combination of Woody, Bo, and Saban at recruiting
February 23rd, 2013 at 3:51 PM ^
a coach now maybe giving him a call.
