Apparently, Jerry Montgomery has left for Oklahoma...he was our primary recruiter for our three current commitments.

From the Scout article that isn't paywalled: "Contract details weren’t available at press time, but sources indicate that Michigan offered a competitive compensation package to Montgomery, but ultimately he felt the opportunity at Oklahoma was clearly one he couldn’t pass up."

I'm guessing they made him recruiting coordinator, which is something we couldn't match with Hecklinski here.

But what if OU offered a lot and we didn't match because he didn't think he was worth it? I know we all think our coaches are the best, but what if Hoke and DB sat down and decided there were better coaches out there for 250k than Montgomery? I'm not saying that's the case, but sometime employers don't match offers on purpose, and not because they're cheap.

the write-up on scout says this:

sources indicate that Michigan offered a competitive compensation package to Montgomery, but ultimately he felt the opportunity at Oklahoma was clearly one he couldn’t pass up.

I think people above may be right about him just getting the chance to have the D-line to himself. Right now I feel like they're basically splitting 4 positions amongst 3 coaches. Maybe OU also sprinkled a DC-in-waiting or a co-DC in there too

Speculating, then I can see it. But Norman isn't Ann Arbor. While Norman is probably the best city in Oklahoma, it pales in comparison to Ann Arbor. Norman and especially Oklahoma summers just suck out loud. And then there is the red dirt...

I don't understand this, because

1.) Montgomery will most likely only be in charge of DT's at Oklahoma

2.) Michigan offered him a "competitive compensation package"

3.) He could be in line for the DC job when Mattison retires

4.) Stoops is going to be on the hot seat soon if he doesn't start winning big games/win the (weakening) Big 12.

Apparently OU offered him Recruiting coordinator responsibilities, which can be a great way to build a resume towards becoming a head coach.  Michigan couldn;t match that as they already have two doing that job so it makes sense for him to move and at least he's moving now when there is more than enough time to find a replacement and adress recruit relationships.

I'm wondering if Montgomery sees a clearer path to becoming a DC at Oklahoma than at Michigan.  He has Mallory to compete with here.  This could be a good career move if his intent is to climb the coaching ranks.

And then, who knows, maybe he returns to Michigan as HC when Hoke is finished here.

Especially if they have ever left for ND. Mattison should just leave now, right?

He's young. He saw an opportunity for himself and his family. I doubt he ran into Hoke's office and called him names, he might decide to walk back to Michigan in time.

You can't find many coaches thse days who spent their entire career at one place. The only one that comes to my mind is Joe Paterno.

As others have pointed out, Brady Hoke coached at other schools, leaving Michigan to coach at Ball State. So did Gary Moeller, who left Michigan in the late seventies for Illinois before coming back.

But he is just a position coach and good recruiter. I have never heard of a program going into a downward spiral because a position coach left. Good luck to him and I am confident we will hire a solid replacement.

How is this Dave Brandon's fault?

Assistant coaches are always going to leave. We've been blessed. Let's just hope we find a replacement that is as good or better.

Go throw a bunch of money at Tosh Lupoi! #dreaming
