I'm always shocked when anyone leaves Michigan of their own free will. Good luck, coach, and thanks for your service.
Peppers at 10, which seems low.
I'm always shocked when anyone leaves Michigan of their own free will. Good luck, coach, and thanks for your service.
but disappointed he moved laterally and decided to leave this late in the coaching hire process (although who knows how significant a pay raise he got). Why I am not shocked: If you look at Montgomery's resume, he hasn't held a job for more than 2 years, and he was the one coach on the staff who didn't have a lot of ties to Hoke or Michigan. He actually left Indiana after less than a month after being hired to come to Michigan.
We'll find out when this is all said and done that there is more to it than just heading to Oklahoma for the same job. He's been promised something else. You don't leave a rising program that is gaining national recognition and has a chance to start competing for national titles without some other reason...Oklahoma is a good program, but an inferior school and is currently stuck in an unimportant conference.
Somehow--and I don't know how yet--this move benefits Montgomery beyond putting a few more bucks in his pocket.
Great point about him leaving Indiana right after being hired by them.. He's a hired gun.
His coaching will be easily replace since we will still have Hoke and Mattison in addition to his replacement. The recruiting loss might be a little more difficult.
I dunno. It's better that he left after all of the LOIs were signed. If he had left earlier, we might have lost a few commits.
Hate to see this! How will this impact Mone?
Just saw this. I hope it doesn't have too much of an impact on recruiting.
Poop. I don't understand it, but to each their own.
I'm betting he's getting a hefty raise and more responsibility, but on paper it seems like a lateral move. Punch to the gut.
I don't think it'll have much impact on our on the field play (no offense to Jerry, more of a Hoke, Mattison compliment) but recruiting hurts. We need to find another young guy with energy to fill the void. It wouldn't hurt to hire an African-American coach either. I'm just calling it how I see it and this leaves 65+ Fred Jackson as the only African-American member of our core coaching staff.
I agree that we need to replace him with another African-American coach. Some people say it doesn't matter, but it does.
2004 graduate. Former Linebacker. Saginaw Native. Current RB Coach at Cinci, and prior defensive assistant. I'm sure he knows plenty about coaching the DL from his experience as a player and defensive assistant. And I'm sure Hoke and Mattision can give him a little help as he "masters" the position.
There's no rumor here. Just one man's opinion on a good fit.
EDIT: Apparently the current RB coach at NIU, as of mid-January. I'm pretty sure we lured Bacari out of WMU weeks after he accepted a job so it wouldn't be unheard of.
Answer me this: Montgomery was one of the last hires by Hoke, and was coaching at Wyoming prior to Michigan. Do you think we'd be able to hire a better young, up-and-coming assistant coach in 2011 right after the RR era, or right now after we've had all this recruiting success and winning seasons?
This is Michigan Fergodsakes!
Isn't this a lateral move? I'll be upset if Dave Brandon let OU out bid us for him, he was possibly our best recruiter
but Greg Mattison is, without a doubt, our best recruiter.
Who else is left as a recruiter besides Mattison? Does Hoke even recruit? We're SCREWED!!1!
Always Be Cobbling
You rarely hear about a coach making a better impression than Montgomery. I can't recall who exactly, but I feel like I've heard multiple times that people loved Jerry because he was right up front with them. I seem to recall someone saying to the effect of 'Michigan had better not let him get away' because they were so impressed with him
Is this the real QB Demetrius Brown?
damn that hurts. Was a nice youthful presence on a staff that is on the older side.
Huge raise? Not having the dc and hc micro managing your position group? That's the only thing I can think of......very shocking.
Well its certainly not good news, but its still early in the recruiting period to recover. Any ideas on a replacement? Maybe a chance Roy Manning comes back?
this is horrible. we have to be viewed as the last destination. oklahoma? what could they possibly be offering other than money? DB has to step up.
For a guy like Montgomery who doesn't have the long ties to Hoke, it makes sense. Oklahoma probably opened up the bank for him, gave him a better title, and like it or not, the Big 12 is a better conference than the Big Ten right now. Hopefully, Michigan starts paying its assistants better and we're able to attract a good replacement.
i highly doubt that, given their recent defections.
You watched the Big Ten this year, right?
So, you're saying the Big 12 is a better conference than the Big Ten (right now).
After last season... it's like comparing a Ford Taurus and a Dodge Neon.
they offer a quicker route up than we do. Mattison and Hoke are in this for the long haul. That means he'd be waiting a long time.
as opposed to stoops? come on.
is definitely not in it for the long haul. i could see him retiring in a couple years. i hope not, but it wouldn't shock me.
Maybe he's not in line for DC job after Mattison.
The "destination" idea applies more to head coaches. Assistants regularly leave. Note that Hoke and Mattison also spend a lot of time with the DL, so it's possible Montgomery was looking for more responsibility.
How in the hell is DL coach a destination job for anybody at any program? This guy is 31 years old and has coached at 3 different colleges since 2006, 4 if you count Indiana. This is not a big deal.
But...I don't see this affecting Speight or Ferns in the least. Mone attends the same HS as Houma so I think we' re alright. Oh ya and we still have a D line coach.
I think Mone would be under Hoke since he's primarily a 1 Tech.
Here's the short writeup on Scout about it.
I don't know much about Oklahoma's staff, but I wonder if he is making the move so that he has more control over the D-line. Here he had Hoke and Mattison also helping out, and although I'm sure he appreciated it, he learned what he learned and has moved on. I'm wondering how the staff chooses to replace the position on the staff. Another DL coach? A QB coach?
makes room for him. Go get him. Hoke can coach the Dline, that's where his passion is anyway.
Soup Campbell has got to be in the running. He's in the CFL coaching now (but not a HC). When Hoke first got here, according to Sam Webb back then (if I recall correctly), Soup was his first choice for WR coach. Soup turned him down to stay at Iowa. His answer might be different now.
Where would Soup coach? The offense looks fairly completed. We might need a QB coach, but the other positions are filled as well as defense. Only position left open is DL.
Didnt wanna see him go, but he has to do whats best for him. Bad news nonetheless.
I'm going to be pissed if I ever find out Oklahoma outbid us when the athletic department made 7 million dollars in profit last year.
I'm sure Dave Brandon's first priority is to make sure he doesn't piss off UMxWolverines.
It damn well better be!
But what if OU offered a lot and we didn't match because he didn't think he was worth it? I know we all think our coaches are the best, but what if Hoke and DB sat down and decided there were better coaches out there for 250k than Montgomery? I'm not saying that's the case, but sometime employers don't match offers on purpose, and not because they're cheap.
Cheap ass Michigan
All that B1G expansion/TV money and we can't afford to keep our D-Line coach? It seems like Brian was right. DB will use the extra cash for useless non-revenue sports and building an indoor rowing facility.
Go away Phil.
the write-up on scout says this:
sources indicate that Michigan offered a competitive compensation package to Montgomery, but ultimately he felt the opportunity at Oklahoma was clearly one he couldn’t pass up.
I think people above may be right about him just getting the chance to have the D-line to himself. Right now I feel like they're basically splitting 4 positions amongst 3 coaches. Maybe OU also sprinkled a DC-in-waiting or a co-DC in there too
Speculating, then I can see it. But Norman isn't Ann Arbor. While Norman is probably the best city in Oklahoma, it pales in comparison to Ann Arbor. Norman and especially Oklahoma summers just suck out loud. And then there is the red dirt...
Ever think that he wasnt carrying hus weight in Mattisons eyes? Assumptions go both ways folks. And I wasnt happy with the DL this year.
The hell, man.
I clicked on the panic button, the more you click, the more it impresses.
The most awesome thing, ever.
Yeah, looks like no Cole commitment this weekend. Why does it seem like Montgomery was recruiting every single big time recruit we are in on?
I don't understand this, because
1.) Montgomery will most likely only be in charge of DT's at Oklahoma
2.) Michigan offered him a "competitive compensation package"
3.) He could be in line for the DC job when Mattison retires
4.) Stoops is going to be on the hot seat soon if he doesn't start winning big games/win the (weakening) Big 12.
According to the Beave, he was only in charge of the 3-techs and 5-techs at Michigan.
Yeah, that's what I've heard too. But I really can't see this as more of a lateral move...if he had full control of the DL at OU, then ok. But it's looking like he won't, and we know money was no issue (in the Scout article)....
Apparently OU offered him Recruiting coordinator responsibilities, which can be a great way to build a resume towards becoming a head coach. Michigan couldn;t match that as they already have two doing that job so it makes sense for him to move and at least he's moving now when there is more than enough time to find a replacement and adress recruit relationships.
Hire Mike Hart.
Are you sure?
Why Hart over Campbell?
I like heart jokes more than soup jokes.
I am 100% in favor of this.
To coach defense?
I don't want a quitter back. Definitely not as a head coach. Steady in Oklahoma and get torched by okst for all I care
Didn't Hoke leave and then come back? I'm okay with how that turned out for us.
Especially if they have ever left for ND. Mattison should just leave now, right?
He's young. He saw an opportunity for himself and his family. I doubt he ran into Hoke's office and called him names, he might decide to walk back to Michigan in time.
You can't find many coaches thse days who spent their entire career at one place. The only one that comes to my mind is Joe Paterno.
As others have pointed out, Brady Hoke coached at other schools, leaving Michigan to coach at Ball State. So did Gary Moeller, who left Michigan in the late seventies for Illinois before coming back.
Mike Stoops is the DC at Oklahoma. Unless he leaves for a head coaching job, Montgomery has no chance of moving up. Also, this leaves us with Fred Jackson as the only non-white coach on the team. Not good...
But he is just a position coach and good recruiter. I have never heard of a program going into a downward spiral because a position coach left. Good luck to him and I am confident we will hire a solid replacement.
How is this Dave Brandon's fault?
Assistant coaches are always going to leave. We've been blessed. Let's just hope we find a replacement that is as good or better.
Go throw a bunch of money at Tosh Lupoi! #dreaming
It's his fault because he chose to be cheap
How the fuck do you know? Reveal your information and source or be gone.
I'm willing to bet that Brandon did whatever Hoke and/or Mattison asked him to do, within reason.
Well Hart might not know much about coaching defense, but he sure wouldn't be worse than GERG
Bring ron english back..hes only across he street..
Soup Campbell or Mike Hart would both be solid choices. Coach Jackson said Mike Hart would be the a combination of Woody, Bo, and Saban at recruiting
a coach now maybe giving him a call.
How about Shaun Cable?
Perhaps even Chone Crable?
Do change from time to time. Not sure if you know that.
Have to hire a d line coach? Can they adjust the current staff considering Hoke focus is the d line??
They absolutely must hire a D Line coach. You win!!
Isn't Borges the QB coach? I might be inadvertently making your point for you...
You should check out Roy Manning's coaching bio.
It wouldn't surprise me at all to see Manning hired. Aside from being a Michigan alum and a good coach, he is a young African American man who can likely relate to some kids in a way a that a 50 year old white guy might not be able to...just sayin
What about Tyrone Wheatley?
I would take Wheatley over Hart.
I must say, I'm a little lost here. What the hell does Mike Hart know about being a DL coach?
I love the guy and would love more than anything to see him back here, but uh, as a DL coach? Not exactly what I pictured.
Montgomery was the DE coach, so essentially he micro managed a bit with Mattison and Hoke both also coaching the DL. The thought is that those 2 can still coach the DL and that the incoming coach can really be put anywhere Hoke sees fit. I do agree with the overall suggestion that the new coach should be a young, energetic, and eager African American though and Mike Hart certainly fits that bill.
Rabble rabble Dave Brandon rabble rabble
We don't need him as a DL coach, we already have two, right? He would be a heck of a recruiter and eventual replacement for all-time running backs coach, Sir Fred Jackson.
While this move was not really about $$$ I feel like this would not have happens at an SEC school.
People don't leave for promotions when the path ahead of them is blocked at SEC schools. Weird....must be the only place that that doesn't happen. If he really is being offered recruiting coordinator responsibilities, it's a great resume booster and I would have been surprised to see him stay here when the path ahead is blocked.
I'm sure the staff will find another replacement and I'm sure energy and recruiting ability will be evaluated. Brandon understands what it takes to bring in good talent, so I wouldn;t worry about being out-bid.
It was about money
Look what Cam Cameron is making at LSU and tell me DB would ever pony up that kind of money for an assistant coach. The only reason we got Mattison was because he wanted to be close to his daughter and granddaughter.
Charlie strong? Young, black and coached defense! Dave brandon should give him a call.
Charlie Strong was a D Coordinator at Florida and now the head coach of a team that won a BCS game...I'm sure he wants to come here to be a position coach.
I guess that will hurt us with Mone; and McDowell; and Marshall. And who knows how many othe recruits he was in on, recruits he's going to try and steer towards Oklahoma now.
Most of all, though? It's just embarassing.
sure thats the only way to look at that scenario. It may be a positive theres an opportunity will be coached by the HC. It works for Saban he coaches the DBs if I'm not mistaken.
But not embarrassing...when other schools come after your coaching staff it is a compliment. Look how many have been picked off Saban's tree. His program is just fine. Now if we go the way of Mack brown...not so good.
have this happen all the time. Who wouldn't jump at Coaching the new players we have brought in and the one's in the pipeline!
Your first sentence is correct, your second sentence, more arguably, as well. Notably, though, neither has anything to do with either of the things I said.
Has anyone ever thought about will happen when Fred retires? I'm wondering if Tyrone or Mike will get the running backs job. Someone will be left out and I can only imagine the blog when that happens.
I'm rooting for Mike Cox.
Is Glen Steele interested in coaching?
Now that is an idea! He his a teacher and HS football coach, I think in IN. Never know!
Upvote this man.
OU's D-line play has been atrocious the past few years, so success there, both in recruiting D-linemen and in coaching them, will be ascribed to coach Montgomery.
Lets hire Dashawn Hand's hs coach.
Sparty just beat us to it. Mark Hollis just read this post and has issued a press statement letting the world know that "we pioneered that idea, it's not exactly rocket science at this point".
As noted by others here, we don't really need a defensive line specialist... So why not use the free coaching spot to hire a special teams coach? Maybe one who is at least comfortable with the idea of trying a rugby-style punt formation? But they must be fluent in The Brunette Technique.
It took me a good minute to get the reference.
Best of luck to Coach Montgomery, definitely sucks.
LGBT peeps just snapped their fingers and twirled their wallet chains at you!! Lol!
BUT IT"S DAVID BRANDONS FAULT!!!! He should just pay Mongomery whatever the hell he wants!!!!!! We should just pay all of our football coaches in the gazillions cause we're Michigan!!!!!!! Also, while we're at it, we should just nuke China!!!!!!!
Well, it looks like I shouldn't be so cynical and give more credence to such rumors. I scoffed at this early in the week. I always thought he would leave, but for a co-DC or DC gig. He did well here, and we may see his name as a DC or even head coach in the near future.
Lets stop bitching and crying about him leaving and discuss who his replacement will be. I think it will be Glen Steele.
Toney Clemens! What too soon
Is he related to Roger?
No, but he is related to Samuel Langhorne
Jerry Montgomery coached 1/3 of the defensive line for 2 years and a lot people assume he was the DC in waiting? I'm really happy that those people don't work for the Michigan football program. Holy shit.
Bring on Les Miles! But only if Saban can't be lured here.
.. get a QB coach now? I think we are set at DL.
I agree, I think we should pick up either a Special Teams Coach or a QB Coach
What about Hulk Hogan? I bet he could recruit well.
I prefer the Steiner brothers.
Jerry did good work at Michigan. Sad to see him go, but I wish the best for him. It's the nature of the beast.
I know that this would not be the usual approach, but what about offering the job to a successful high school head coach at a program that has tons of talent? This would be especially interesting if it could open up a pipeline to a school or area where Michigan has not had much success (a big time program in Georgia or the like)
If they go the alum route, I would vote for Cato June.
Thanks for the great work at Michigan. Good luck to him in the future. Now we need to find the next Michigan Man.
but someone who knows DLine please.
For Jerry, he gets to build his resume. Coaching is a small fraternity based largely on relationships, so Jerry adds Stoops as a sponsor in addition to Hoke and he interacts with more B12 and some SEC staffs.
For us, Hoke can hire for specific needs now that he has 2 yrs with this staff and full recruiting cycles. Maybe we really need a coach with ties to VA/Carolinas or some other area to recruit better.
I see alot of posters saying we should hire a specials teams coach or a qb coach but michigan already has Dan Ferrigno coaching special teams and Gorges Al coaching the qb's.
On another note: How many HC's coach a position other than QB's? It seems like Hoke is the only coach u hear about who coaches a position group other than quarterback.
Charles Woodson, anyone?
Not really worried bout it. We got plenty of options and I am confident Hoke and Mattison will find someone legit.
How about Kate Upton?
consider. JM is a relatively young guy, and as stated in an earlier post has never stayed at a post loonger than 2 years. He probably has designs on a head coaching job one day. Michigan and Oaklahoma on the resume probably does not hurt in that case.
Oaklahoma may offer a chance for diversification of responsibilities that Mich alone MAY not. Maybe a Coordinator posistion, assistant head coach posistion. His recruiting foot print may expand for future purposes ie head coaches with a broad national recruiting base is probably preferable to a relatively limited base.
Ususally most articles mention Hokes influence on the DL coaching. Montgomery may not resent that but now he is the DL headliner now, which also looks better on the resume. Maybe it's time for JM to step out of that "shadow" take the lessons he's learned from Mattison and Hoke and branch out and apply them. At this juncture too much is unknow and speculation is all we really have other than. OU offered a young coach that has a history of moving an opportunity he could not pass up. On the surface to Mich fans it looks like a lateral move but obviously not in his eyes. He was offered a competative compensation package.
What we don't know: Was he encouraged by Hoke to move on for the sake of JM's upward mobility (hokes blessings)
Did JM initiate the contact?
Was the compensation package an empty jesture or actually a good faith effort? (doubtful since Dave Brandons comments on Mich assistant compensation). I'm sure these and other details will surface in the comming months from some thoughtful insider type.
JM intiated the contact when he was recruiting players for us. It was more Oklahoma looked at Michigan's D-Line and said, "Well, we can't get Hoke or Mattison, so let's get Montgomery."
Our brand takes a hit if it really came down to a bidding war.
HOWEVA, if there's one position where this hurts least, it's Montegomery's. Hoke obsesses about the D-Line (remember when he gave a seminar on it), so I'm confident that he'll find an adequate replacement who knows his stuff.
I would have been more worried if Curt Mallory (M alum who coaches the secondary) made a lateral move. Or Dan Ferrigno (TEs and kicking game). Those two had the biggest impact on our defensive turnaround in 2011, along with Greg Mattison and Hoke.
Montegomery will be missed. He was a good coach for us. But it wasn't like Hoke had him for seven+ years and now has no idea what to do. Montgomery was one of the few guys on the new staff that didn't come from SDSU with Hoke.
can get a good gauge on how great the 2014 DL commit if suddenly they have an OU offer.
Good luck to Jerry.
We will find out how big a loss this is next year. If our d line play goes downhill, then it was not good letting him go. If our d line play gets better, then not such a loss.
I know this may mean nothing, and I'm not sure if it's been stated before (didn't see any reference). But from the TomVH chat/questions he asked the incoming class, this struck me:
3) Which coach on Michigan's staff -- other than Brady Hoke -- were you the most impressed with during your recruitment?
Running backs coach Fred Jackson -- 6
Defensive coordinator Greg Mattison -- 6
Wide receivers coach Jeff Hecklinski -- 5
Linebackers coach Mark Smith -- 2
Offensive line coach Darrell Funk -- 2
Ond vote each -- offensive coordinator Al Borges, special teams/tight end coach Dan Ferrigno, defensive line coach Jerry Montgomery
Only one vote for Jerry Montgomery. So while having Coach Montgomery leave is certainly a buzzkill, at least he wasn't on the top of that list. Makes me feel a little better about this. I think we'll be OK.
I am offering my energy to the universe in hope that they pull the brilliant stroke and bring back Vance Bedford. Sure, he is the DC at Louisville, but offer him a raise and the opportunity to replace Mattison down the road. The defensive backfield becomes a strength in short order.
He developed Charles Woodson fergodsakes.
• In 2012, the defense finished in the top 25 for the third straight season. The Cardinals were ranked 23rd in the nation in total defense and 16th in pass defense.
• Louisville finished 23rd in total defense in 2011 after ranking 14th in 2010. Bedford's defense was 10th nationally against the run, 17th in scoring defense and 21st in sacks in 2011.
• In 2010, Louisville was 10th in pass defense and seventh in the country in sacks.
• In 2009, he helped the Gators to a 13-1 record and a win over previously-undefeated Cincinnati in the Sugar Bowl.
• His secondary was one of the best in the nation, finishing seventh in the country in interceptions and second in the nation in pass efficiency defense.
• Joe Haden, a first-round pick by the Cleveland Browns, was a consensus All-American in 2009 and was also named a finalist for the Jim Thorpe Award, given to the nation's top defensive back.
• During the 2008 season, he guided a secondary that ranked third in pass efficiency defense and 20th in pass yardage defense. The group also tied the school record and led the nation with 26 interceptions.
• His unit returned seven interceptions for touchdowns during a four-year stretch, equaling the team`s total from the previous nine seasons combined.
• Developed three young talents in Mike Brown, Charles Tillman and Nathan Vasher.
• Led the nation in pass defense in 1997 and ranked 20th in 1996.
• The Wolverines` 1997 national championship secondary set an NCAA record allowing just 8.8 yards per completion and finished fifth nationally by allowing just 133.8 passing yards per contest.
• His secondary in 1997 led the Big Ten and finished third nationally with 22 interceptions, and Charles Woodson became the only defensive player to ever win the Heisman Trophy.
Luck. No problem with him leaving if he thinks its best for him and his family.
Is the Ole Miss DL coach available? Seems to be a good recruiter
With 2 DLine coaches as head coach and DC I am sure Montgomery felt crowded, but I am sure Hoke & GREG can find a good coach soon.
Glenn Steele is the new DL coach. Book It.
