High optimism from Sam. I have heard that Scott is suddenly much more likely to be in the class than KJ Williams. I'm kind of surprised that he expects Jamarco Jones and Adoree to join the class
Sam Web On the Final 5 Spots In the '14 Recruiting Class
Love Sam, but I don't think be knows anything but high optimism. If he ever gives a percentage shot at landing a recruit, I'd cut it in half. At least.
I think Adoree Jackson's nickname, if he commits to us should be Adoree "That's Amore' " Jackson.
for your insightful response.
Well ya I mean I would like this very much too
Obviously Sam knows far more about recruiting than I'll ever hope to know, but I see Adoree' Jackson as a major stretch right now, and most every insider has Jamarco Jones in a buckeye jersey at this juncture. Tay Scott seems to be a Michigan lean, and it appears to be only a matter of time before Malik McDowell pulls the trigger. Michigan insiders seem to be strangely confident about Da'Shawn Hand recently, with both Sam and TomVH going so far as to say Michigan is in the lead for his services. I'm growing in confidence about Hand because it seems like it's trending in our favor.
Has Sam really gone so far as to say Michigan is in the lead for Hand? I think he has been pretty careful about not saying that.
Agreed he always qualifies his statements regarding Michigan's position with Hand by saying Hand has not outright acknowledged any leaders himself.
If I remember correctly (and if I heard correctly - WTKA isn't always that clear on my daily commute between Ionia and Lansing), he said something to the affect of, I don't see Michigan as the far and away leader for Hand. To me this implied that he thinks Michigan is a leader but not by much. He's still choosing his words carefully, but again it sounded like that's what he was implying.
I think Jackson is less of a stretch post Peppers. Supposedly Jackson's interest is picking up and he talks to Peppers frequently. What likely needs to happen is for Hand for commit, which will create more hype and a higher projected ceiling for the program. If Hand commits while Jackson is still fairly open minded, I think we're in a good spot.
It seems like both peppers and Jackson have a good understanding of how much the rest of their teammates affect what they themselves can do on the field. Teams can't run it all the time and expect to win, an if the cb on the other side of the field is just as good as you, you're gonna have plenty of opportunities to make plays. If I was Jackson, I'd be thinking I have a chance to be part of what could become the best defensive backfield ever, not just because of Peppers, but the rest of the d and Mattison as well.
That is true and what I would think too buuuuuuut, to play devils advocate, he could also wind up saying well Peppers has one slot locked, Dymonte has another slot locked up and playing time back there will come at a premium. It ain't like we have bringing in scrubs.
I don't think that's how it will go, he and Westphal could definitely find starting slots in that commotion and a starting 4 db set of Peppers Dymonte Parrker and Adoree is effing ridiculous
I can see us taking one more. It is pretty clear that the coaches want more depth at OLB.
I want the last spot to go to Darrion Owens. I think he is similar to Winovich in a way that he has played some safety in the past, but will be a OLB in college.
Seems more likely than jackson
I'm a little confused by that.
I think Sam said that he was going to discuss Jackson and Westphal on tomorrow's recruiting roundup.
the odds are good that we have more than five spots to give out, but of those spots, these are the guys we are hearing about most, and thus seem most likely.
A Jamarco Jones steal would very much sting the buckeyes....
It would be more than a sting.. more like a gut wrenching bite. The meltdown would be great.
must have been a serious blow. . .
I hear rumors starting already that Urban is "starting to cool" on him.
that his butt may have too much wiggle, for Urban's taste......
If Peppers and Adoree' Jackson end up signing with Michigan, I think we're going to see some transfers at that position...
It's interesting that Parrker Westphal isn't listed. Much like Tommy Doles and LaQuon Treadwell, it seems like Westphal is waiting for a reason not to commit... I'm not saying he won't, but it's a little strange that he hasn't done so already with spots dwindling.
Also, I think Jamarco Jones will end up at OSU, even though I think he would fit better at Michigan.
I also get that Treadwell/Doles feeling from Westphal... numerous visits, says lots of positive things, but not pulling the trigger despite the class filling up... I think he ends up elsewhere.
My theory on Westphal, and how Hoke operates, is that he tells Westphal that only, say, Jackson and Smith can trump Westphal's committment...ie he is third on the committable list, whereby if Jackson or Smith go somehwere else, that Westphal can committ, and thus, he "waits".... my theory would explain why Westphal hasn't committed, and answers your thought. That Hoke won't accept a Westphal committment yet, until the other two ahead of him decide, presuming theyve given a timeframe suitable to Hoke.
And this would explain why Tommy Doles didnt committ, and then all of a sudden went with NW.... ie he is told that, say, he is fourth on the list.. and Bushell-Beatty and whoever were ahead of him yet undecided at the moment, and that he can either wait, or not.
I do not think Hoke would recruit Westphal in that manner.
i have witnessed (and i am sure many others have, too) brady and mattison interacting with recruits and their families and it seems very much against the atmosphere BH is trying to build. it would be damn near impossible for someone to tell me "we like you 4th best" and then turn and try to hug my mom without getting a facefull of purse.
I think Hoke and staff would gladly take a commitment from Westphal right now. I think they have put a few kids on the backburner in the past, but I don't think Westphal is one of them. While he's not a 5* DB, he's still very good. ESPN has him as a top 100 player.
ESPN knows best this year.
Yeah, I think U-M would be elated to get Westphal; not sure what the hold-up is, but I think he'll commit if there's a spot for him when he finally decides.
I think it is more likely that Westphal is waiting to see where A. Jackson goes, than that Michigan is waiting on Jackson before they'd accept a committment from Westphal.
The one thing recruits have consistently said about Hoke & Co. is that the staff is honest and lets recruits know where they stand. I think there is good chance that M has told Westphal that although the plan is to take 2 CBs in 2014, they consider Jackson an elite prospect and will take him regardless if he wants to come. If so, then Jackson's decision could be a major factor in Westphal's thinking.
So far as I've seen, Westphal is the only other corner that M is recruiting besides Jackson. That means if Westphal doesn't want to have to out-compete both Peppers and Jackson for a starting position, then he can probably afford to wait and see what Jackson does before making up his mind. If Jackson goes Blue, then Westphal can go to Northwestern or wherever else will gladly take him. If Jackson doesn't commit to M, then Wetphal can take that second spot for himself knowing the position is closed.
I think, in a general sense, Brady Hoke wants kids who want to play for Michigan. In that respect, I think he'd be more likely to do first come, first serve between a top 100 guy and a top 10 guy than hold a spot for the top 10 guy only to never have him commit.
While that makes sense, I think it's gonna be hard to tell - we could also see moves to WR, couldn't we?
We have Jones, Dukes, York, Chesson, Darboh (and then walk-ons) after Gallon and Dileo graduate. Then we have Ways and Harris in the fold for 2014.
I could definitely see Jourdan Lewis moving to the slot, maybe even Reon Dawson seeing some snaps on offense.
That's seven scholarship wide receivers, not counting any other additions in the 2014 class (Scott, Williams, etc.). I don't see a dire need to change kids' positions. Yes, I think one or two of those cornerbacks could play WR if needed, but competition could be almost as fierce on that side of the ball with Harris, potentially Artavis Scott, and any other breakout receivers.
If Michigan does land Tay Scott, plus already having Moe Ways and Drake Harris, does that have any effect on George Campbell for the class of 2015? Or not just because he's that good.
Would probably help with Campbell considering they are HS teammates and play different WR roles. They would make each other better being on the field together.
From everything I have heard landing Scott would help quite a bit with Campbell as the two go to the same school and have a friendship.
Campbell would be a problem for Ways, not the other way around, and as noted, Scott projects more to the slot position.
Green also seemed like he had no reason to hold off on commiting last year and he still ended up in the class.
Ummm...okay? I don't know what that has to do with anything.
Green was the #1 running back in the country according to some, and virtually any school would have taken him up until National Signing Day (or beyond). Westphal isn't that talented.
Secondly, Green wasn't a heavy Michigan lean last spring. Treadwell put it off and put it off and put it off, even though Michigan was strongly leading very early in his recruitment. Westphal's early comments about Michigan put him much more in the Treadwell category than the Green category.
True, but also remember than T. Howard is Westphal's coach. That may make a difference in the end.
I have not forgotten.
A lot of things "may make a difference in the end."
Let's not get arrogant about who knows more about high schoolers, ok?
Stupid double post.
At this time last year, Treadwell was thought to be a lock and Green was thought to be a VaTech lean.
I get the Diamond, Treadwell feeling from both westphal and a little bit from mcdowell. although I get it more from Parker than Malik, but they both have been to campus multiple times throughout the process up to this point and yet no commitment.
FUCKING YES, PLEASE!
My sentiments exactly.
If we landed those 5 recruits that Sam mentions. Wow.
My thoughts are that Sam's last name includes an additional "B" and that if we lock up the top overall recruit in the state of Michigan and the top overall recruit in the nation, it wouldn't matter if the final 3 spots were filled by you, another one of this site's blog enthusiasts and myself... We'd wind up with the #1 overall class by a landslide. Think about Ole Miss and where they wound up after getting Robert and Laquon last year. Treadwell wasn't even the #2 overall player and they wound up with a top 10 class. If we have #1 & #2 this year, in addition to all of the other studs in this class, it won't even be close. Hell, we even have this year's Treadwell in Drake Harris.
Ole Miss had 27 commits last year. Michigan could have 10 fewer than that. I don't think Michigan is competing for the top overall spot given the size of their class.
That seems odd considering that we are currently sitting atop the class rankings... I guess it's all just semantics and they'll rank us up until the bitter end, but freeze us out of the final rankings ala tsio in last seasons postseason play/s. Class size is a factor, but it isn't the ONLY factor. Besides the fact that there will likely be some attrition down the road that allows this class to balloon to 18-20.
This weeks RR said as muich. Given our class size and historical comparisons from similar classes from USC etc. that UM will most likely not even end up with a top 5 class due to class size.
Comparing our class to USC's would be a pointless exercise for the following reasons : 1. USC had 12 recruits 2. USC had reduced scholarships and sanctions that likely had some type of affect on how the recruiting sites even bothered to rank their class 3. Michigan's class will include probably include a minimum of 16, but more than likely around 20, a whole 25-60% larger... And last, but certainly not least 4. In this hypothetical exercise where Michigan lands Hand & Peppers along with a slew of Top150 kids, it changes the dynamic completely because USC didn't land the top 2 kids last year.
...if we land that class it would be RIDICULOUS and would easily be the pound for pound best class Michigan has ever had in the modern recruiting era. That being said...I expect to see some more transfers and a class larger than 17.
The current rankings are meaningless in a discussion about the effect of class size on the final rankings. Nobody is close to full right now.
In terms of the top 17 or 18 recruits, Michigan would win by a landslide (with the five Sam lists.) However, given how classes are ranked, the NUMBER of recruits who come in also are part of the calculation, and would make it very difficult to land the top class. If Michigan has the number 1 ranked class with less than 20 recruits for 2014, it would be unprecedented. I guess if we added Leonard Fournette and JuJu Smith and Braden Smith, that could happen, but no one is predicting that.
However, it doesn't really matter that Michigan isn't "Number 1." If we get the recruits we want, especially including Peppers, Hand, Jackson, along with all the four stars (McDowell, Mone, Harris, Ferns, Jones, even Nicholson,) who cares whether we're number 1 or number 6. Those kinds of recruits will lay the ground work for National Championship level teams. And with judicious redshirts and the coaching up by Mattison et al, we'll be in a place we've never been before.
he is reaching for the stars...no question about that.
aren't the same. I'll hold out for the gut...
Exactly. Until I hear about Sam heaving into a toilet or in the fetal position, I'm cooling my expectations.
this is a little crazy right? i mean, this is "best case" scenario by far.
...that would be best case scenario. :)
I believe it's spelled "Samm Web." Thanks in advance.
is that Jabrill Peppers is highly unlikely to enroll early.
He's interested, but since he goes to a Catholic school, it would have to be approved by the archdiocese and his principal/school president is not interested in making that happen. Jabrill will perhaps bring it up again after the season, but don't count on Jabrill being able to enroll early.
In that case, maybe that Gordon Gee was onto something about Catholics.
you are on a roll
Thanks man...just had my lunch.
ever grab the roll in public and wonder what the brown smudge is?
yep... Turd on a roll again.
In Michigan, it's not an arch-diocese rule that I'm aware of but rather the individual school's. At the school I coach, we just felt the kid would miss out on a milestone occasion in his young life: graduating with his classmates, and to a lesser extent - prom. Obviously football is important to these kids, and their eagerness to move on to college ball is important to them. But in the looooooong run - 20+ years down the line - completing the high school experience is probably more important.
If that's the only reason, shouldn't that choice be left to the student and his parents?
EDIT: Lord Voldemort's post below sheds a little more light on this. His reasoning is much more understandable (morning mass class, theology classes, etc.). Walking with your class does not seem to be a reasonable reason for administrators, coaches, and/or teachers to make such a decision for (especially) high-level athletes.
Yes, it probably should, and the ONE incident we did have turned into a pissing match (I use the term "we" loosely because I wasn't on the staff at the time). The kid went on to be a D1 QB for a MAC school, played (and might have even started), then transferred to Grand Valley. He played one year in Europe and is now back in Michigan, working like the rest of us.
And in the end, it's impossible to say if enrolling early would have changed anything.
As the above poster said, that should be left up to the kid/parents whether the high school experience is most important.
In the loooooooong run, getting ahead in college so you can potentially make your mark and earn a spot in a millionaire's profession like the NFL would seem to be more important than prom, graduating with classmates, etc.
Of course, it's going to be different for each kid, but it shouldn't be up to the principal, coach, etc. for those reasons.
Now if the principal, superintendent, dean, or whoever decides that kids shouldn't graduate early because they haven't fulfilled their academic requirements, that's a different story.
In the long run, neither of those things is very likely to matter a great deal. But if either did, I'd suspect it'd be the one that gets you a headstart on your career.
I think you're onto something there
I graduated high school 17 years ago and don't remember prom or graduation. I do remember college and law school graduation, though.
I don't remember who spoke or what he/she said.
I do remember the girl next to me running her toe up and down my leg.
Does that count?
In New Jersey I feel like all Catholic schools don't allow early graduation. I think at mine, you wouldn't have enough credits to graduate if you wanted to leave early.
is that most private schools don't allow early graduation, and it just happens that a big percentage of private schools are Catholic. The people I know who went to Catholic schools largely have a hard time believing that it was technically possible to graduate from my public high school in three years (although I kind of doubt the administration would let that happen, it could theoretically).
Weddings, HS kids graduating...those damn Catholics have to drag everything out, don't they?
Yes, PRETTY please.
Yes, HOT SMOKING MOMMA please.
for images, and I found this (no I didn't spell "hot" wrong either):
Her nostrils flair when she talks.
Would not bang
What if things were way different, and her nostrils were to flare when she talked? Then would you bang?
and I certainly would have no trouble banging either one.
I would do dirty dirty things to Mary Louise Parker. She can take flight with her nostrils for all I care.
I think the quality would be top 3, but the numbers of commits is not there for a final top 3 ranking. I also think this prediction is overly optimistic vi think there will be a few commits who nobody is mentioning at the moment/ unknown. Also, the optimism will Hand is confusing Io me. The last I've read he said he doesn't have any favorites at the moment. I know everybody is excited that his only official at the time is here, but that shows that there is interest.
Sorry if anybody has posted similar opinion. I'm at work and typing between calls.
Impressive restraint or disappointing amount of time put in here...
apparently the latter...
I'm on here much more than I should be. With news as slow as it has been I've only looked every few hours lately.
As far as posting, what's the point when you get negged for adding your opinion.
I spend far too much time...even before I was a member.
All of them get me and everyone else rediculously excited. We will see what ends up happening.
In the mean time, get out your popcorn.
Yeah, yeah, I'm an asshole, blah, blah, blah.
Do you have to pick on every single one you run across?
Before I left teaching to pursue international relations, I taught at a Catholic School for 3 years. You are unable to graduate early from a Catholic school, because you have to take classes that are not state mandated, such as history of religion, and theology, and have anhour taken up by morning mass. That being said, the standard 6 hour school day is taken up by not core classes, that do not allow students to earn the required credits earky enough to graduate a semester early.
but i would guess that your short term teaching stint will be coverend in the prequels?
That my time after Hogwarts is shady at best, and I did a great bit of traveling. But, the galleons ran out, and I had to take a few odd jobs to help keep butterbeer on the table.
Does anyone know about Hand's commitment timeline? Any chance we seal the deal before the end of this year? Thanks.
Hand likes to keep everyone in suspense so I doubt there's anything set. He's undoubtedly going to be taking his fair share of officials during the Fall, so I wouldn't be surprised if we're waiting on him until signing day.
He has recently said that he'd like to make a decision by December.
Anyone know why TKA doesn't upload the Recruiting Roundup to iTunes anymore?
Use the RSS feed and you can download them into iPhone/android apps instead of iTunes.
I use RSSRadio and it works great.
Thanks for the info but just wondering what you typed in RSS radio to find the Recruiting Roundup podcasts?
If that's how the class plays out then we'll have a better class than USCs last year (before it fell apart.) 5+ 5 stars including 2 of the top 3, and possibly 10+ top 100 recruits.
I refuse to hope for such a ridicuously good finish. if it happens, that would be amazing
Hell im thrilled just about the commits that we have now. Do you guys think there will ever be 2 signing days with one of them being around let's say, September?
An early signing period would be fantastic, especially for UM who seem to be getting a lot of early commits. Luckily, those early commits have panned out and stuck with their commitment (for the most part, looking at you Conley). I would definitely feel much better though, knowing these early commitments could sign their NLOI in September.
I'm not getting my hopes up for a finish like that, but if we were able to land all 5 of them, wow. Could be in the running for the #1 class, or top 3 at the absolute worst.
Not just that have u seen A&Ms class. I would hate to be a Texas fan right now
Why? They don't play anymore. *grabbles about realignment ruining rivalries*
A) they leave conference. Pretty much a "screw you were outta here"
B) success in SEC ala Heisman and lots of wins
C) recruiting classes are now better than Texas'
D) Adding seating to stadium which will make A&Ms bigger than Texas'
Now, although I see where your coming from, sarcasm or not, imagine of MSU achieved what is listed above. Meltdown I tell you, meltdown!
I think several of our recruits are likely to get bumped up a star by 2014 signing day, though. For instance, I think Drake Harris will get a fifth star, Speight will be a 4-star, Mone might be a 5-star, Winovich will probably get a fourth star... It's dfficult to compare interim point totals with a previous year's final totals for that reason. Still, probably no way we finish with the #1 class if we only sign 16 players.
As not to curse the possibility of getting those five...them are good playas.
That combo in this class would make the computers explode that rankings are done on with star overload.
Would be very nice.
If it happened to be the case that we did get all five, then at least with the Rivals data I've been collecting, it would be the first time since they started anyway that Michigan would have three five-star players in the class. Actually, if we did get all five, then it is literally 0.01 off the average rating for 2003, which was 3.82, so 2014 has the potential -if we managed to land everyone listed - to perhaps be right there with highest rated class that Michigan has had since Rivals began its ratings.
Perhaps what speaks well for how this staff recruits and identifies talent is that it would also be the third consecutive year of improvement in the average rating. That is an impressive feat in today's environment by itself.
There's a difference between "would take" and "will get." If a guy like Dwight Williams wants to commit, then Michigan would probably take him. But they don't need a weakside linebacker if it's just a guy.
The caller asked him to name the 5 uncommitted recruits that are most likely to end up a part of this class, not the last 5. At the end Sam said he would throw a LB in there as the 6th.
on ESPN Insider yesterday interviewing Hand who stated a pre-December commitment announcement.
is that Jones is announcing the 27th, and Scott and Jackson are in town for the barbecue, I think, as well as Hand announcing by December, so we will know if this is coming to fruition largely by the time the season starts. For me, this means things should stay relatively interesting until the season (and grad school) starts.
It's a small group, and apparently some or all already talk. They could pull a 2013 version of that crazy weekend. I don't want to be mean, but we'd be able to see Ace meltdown in front of our eyes. It'd be fun.
The BBQ is the most important date left on our recruiting calendar. I believe it sealed the deal for Derrick Green last year, even though he waited to commit. We will get at least one elite prospect out of that event.
If Sam's list is right, I believe the '14 class will be our best ever, based on the average talent level of the committed players. Rivals' rankings were much less accurate 10 years ago, and I think this class would be better, on average.
Edit: double post
One post as a reply and the other as a completely new post.
Would love it if we could even get a few of those guys. It feels like recruiting has gotten more and more exciting each year with our staff. Now I can't wait to see these recruiting classes that Hoke has put together have lots of success on the field.
Seems like the staff really jumps out quick now. They are already on their way to building relationships with the 2015 prospects.
I don't know if this is all that new but it doesn't seem like we heard about so many younger prospects in the past. Maybe one or two but not this many offers already.
The night game will be really good since most of the class is already on board so they can recruit the 2015 prospects that will be there.
Lots of momentum right now.
Lawrence Marshall says, "Hi!"
Remeber his epic trolling of MSU by visiting there, like, all the time and then committing to UM? Oh, and McDowell is transferring to the same HS that Marshall currently attends.
He is a solid four-star with interest in Michigan, however I hear his name discussed less and less.
And this completes my first comment on MGoBlog!
I likewise am surprised about the lack of attention Nicholson gets on the board, as I think he would be a huge get.
He is taking his recruiting at a very methodical pace. He has announced no timetable nor no top list among his 30 offers. He did nothing in the spring because of track (where he fared very well). He did ok at the Pittsburgh rivals camp, he blew up the Columbus camp (MVP), he is going to at Chicago rivals camp this week, and will be at The Opening later this summer. I see him flying up the boards as he finishes up these camps. He wants to take all his 5 official visits (I thinkg Oregon and Stanford have him intrigued). The good news is he has stated one visit will be in Ann Arbor for the ND game. Michigan coaches were at his high school a few weeks ago, so they are still pursuing him. I know his family likes the Michigan coaches the best.
if hoke can close the deal and have those kids sign, we can all agree we can put to rest the hoke can't recruit debate. unfortunately we will still not be a threat to MSU.
Um i would def bang those two...
I don't think they're interested.
Who doesnt like tall dark and handsome sir.
I want Jones the most just so ohio fans can say they cooled on him.
Does Sam know something that we don't? Jones, Scott, and Jackson sound like long shots.
Scott might not end up at Michigan in the long run, but he's not really a long shot. A lot of "experts" presume Michigan to be his leader.
As Magnus points out, the current buzz around Scott is trending very positively for UM. However, I was surprised to hear Sam include Jackson and, especially, Jamarco Jones.
So four 5-stars, all on the defensive side of the ball? Yes, sounds good to me. We'd be DOMINATE.
Buckled up!!! For 7 months...?
Sam explained his reasoning for including Jackson in his final five and not Westphal this morning on the recruiting roundup. He thinks it's possible that Jackson could commit at or right after the barbecue, whereas Westphal has been consistently saying he will take other visits, implying a decision is still a ways off.
