Sam McGuffie to Raiders
if he'll wear gloves?
I don't get it.
He's not wearing gloves in any of those pitches, so why is it worth asking this question? Does he have a love/hate relationship with gloves?
Almost all RBs and WRs wear gloves. McGuffie didn't when he was at Michigan, so there was speculation over whether this would risk more fumbles or anything like that.
Most photos of McGuffie at Rice are sans-gloves, but there are a few of him wearing gloves, so he's not totally opposed.
Good for him. I hope he finds success and happiness in his future endeavors, no matter what they are.
I still think he could have success as a slot WR where his speed could really be used to create separation.
Considering he was drafted as a slot reciever... and spent all last season at Rice as a slot reciever, I'd say your prognostication is solid.
He signed with the Raiders as a UDFA.
As a Mom, this freaks me out. Hasn't he suffered from 3 concussions? All the best to him. Hope he does well and stays healthy.
IF he makes the team you mean. You guys do realize that undrafted FA's have a very, very slim chance of making the team right? And it's not like Sam was snapped up by the Raiders the first day after the draft either.
Unfortunately the same core problem Sam had in college (size) becomes much worse in the NFL.
He has a shot at slot WR, where a shifty, smaller guy can make a living (although you're right, McGuffie hasn't really demonstrated a lot of durability, and that WILL be a problem for a slot guy trying to thread the needle over the LBs, but in front of the safeties)
I think the reason why he got hit so hard was because he wasn't very shifty... good straight line speed, but by the looks of things he relied too mich on hurdling people in high school to avoid big hits, when he was unable to do that in college, he got hit hard.
His straight line speed isn't great either. He runs well on a track but doesn't have good football speed.
you gotta admit though, he held on to that pigskin well no matter how hard he got hit... not many of our ball carries in 2008 could say that...
He looked kind of like a punter when running the football. Very straight up and down. And at his height, that provided very little protection when he decided to dip his helmets and not his shoulder pads/waist.
It was posted here on 4/27, then officially reported a couple days later.
Note that some of the players reported on the list haven't shown up yet on rosters or officially announced by the teams, so they were most likely not UFAs but invited to camp for try-outs. Demens, Kovacs, Mealer, Omameh, Roh and Roundtree are on the official team rosters, which doesn't mean they are guaranteed anything longterm, but they are officially on the team for now and treated as such, unlike try-out players, who aren't even paid (I believe they get room and board for minicamp).
Occasionally they get signed, including one James Rogers (yes, our James Rogers), who was invited into Chiefs camp for a try-out and was signed yesterday. Obviously he showed something in camp. (Quick! Someone tell Brian!)
Good luck Sam!
FWIW Rice converted Sam to a slot WR last year, he had 54 catches for 603 yard, 5 TDs, and a PRTD as well.
Good luck to him in all future endeavors.
This I was definitely surprised by, especially being so late after the draft.
Ohh the memories
For whatever reason, after I clicked on the video, I clicked on one of the suggested videos. Um, yeah... It was the 2008 spring oractice "Hightlight" clip.. whoops
Good for him, hope he makes the squad
on a bad UM team. Might as well have played w/o an Oline. Hope he succeeds.
