Salute to Jack Tatum. RIP
Sad news from California that Jack Tatum has died after a courageous battle with mutliple health problems including severe diabetes that took his leg some years ago.
Tatum was a ferocious hitter, and earned (cultivated?) that reputatation in the NFL.
As our rival on the field for OSU, I honestly don't ever recall Tatum drawing a single personal foul or ever once laying a dirty hit on a Michigan player. Indeed, while he was involved in some frightening plays in the NFL, I always marveled at his skill. He was a tough player, not a dirty player.
Rest in Peace, Jack Tatum. You were one of the great ones.
to Darryl Stingley, who became paralyzed from the chest down as a result of a hit from Tatum in a preseason game in 1978. Stingley died in 2006, and Tatum never once spoke to him after the hit. Tatum always said he had nothing to apologize for, and apparently couldn't be bothered to even meet with Stingley.
No mourning or regrets from me for Tatum's death. Rot in hell, Assassin.
That's pretty harsh. You didn't know him, never will.
But I bet you call yourself one hell of a christian.
That is actually incorrect. He apparently attempted twice to apologize personally to Stingley, but his family did not permit him to see Stingley. However, it came after those initial comments that probably cut deep into the Stingley family.
The Stingley family apparently felt that any apology by Tatum was tied to the promotion of one of Tatum's books.

When Stingley died in 2007 at the age of 55, his son, Derek, told the Chicago Tribune that his father had forgiven Tatum in his mind, though the Stingley family felt any attempts by Tatum to apologize were tied to him promoting one of his books. Tatum defended his style of play and the hit, but also wrote in one of his books that he was "shattered" by the result of the play.

He does show remorse according to the same article in a book, per this quote from it.
All I'm saying is that whether or not he felt remorse, there was a reason Stingley's family didn't want him to meet w/ Tatum.
Personally, I feel like he felt some remorse for the hit. You couldn't be human otherwise.
that an apology would have been nice to see. I still can see Tatum's side of the coin, he was doing his job to hit the WR. Call it a dirty hit all you want, but it is all part of the game these players take risks every day they step on to the field to play.
By the way i am biased as i am a Raider's fan.
I thought Tatum crossed the line from tough, intimidating and physical play, to putting forth a concerted effort to seriously injure someone, and unfortunately Tatum succeeded in his senseless endeavor.
that I have to share the planet with ape-people like you.
I take it you believe Don is winning
Not entirely accurate. Accordingly to Tatum there was at least one TV co-appearance arranged - Stingley cancelled it when he found out Tatum was going to use it to promote one of his books, but it was scheduled. This is in no way a defense of Jack Tatum, just an observation.

Preseason? Sounds almost like Pete Rose. I'm not old enough to know much about Tatum. R.I.P.
RIP Jack Tatum here is to you:
Jack Tatum was a nasty hitter with big time ability. He played like one would have expected a Raiders player to have played in his era. It's unfortunate the outcome of his hit on Darryl Stingley and more unfortunate that after he came to his senses and wanted to follow through in an expression of regret that he could not. It is sad that for such a great player this is his legacy and that, now in passing, the two are so intricately linked.
How can anyone feel remorse for Jack Tatum when he didn't for Darryl Stingley after he paralyzed him?
I’m not going to beg forgiveness,” he told the Bergen County (N.J.) Record in 2003. “That’s what people say: You never apologized. I didn’t apologize for the play. That was football.”
Tatum sounds like a Woody disciple in those comments; it's not like he never tried to express regret but after such hard comments about the game and the play he was turned away.
It's unfortunate on many levels for both families.
Yeah, can't trust those Woody disciples
Bo was an exception in many ways. I have trouble with Woody Hayes, I did as a kid and I do now. It makes so little sense for me for someone to hate an entire state the way he did. He was borderline insane and unfortunately he transmitted that hate to an entire generation of ohio people. I am sorry when anyone dies, but Tatum was not a nice guy, he played dirty in an era that was much more loose than today. He was dirty back in that era, he would be banned today after any one of those hits seen in the above video, he was one of the people that forced the NFL to crack down on that type of stuff.
Dude, it was an effing act to fire up his players and fans. Watch Bo's final interview for that HBO special sometime... Woody came and spoke to the Michigan team on several occasions in retirement. I wish more people would read Rosenberg's book, War As They Knew It. Freep crap aside, he really captures the humanity in Woody and explains his behavior so well that it's hard to legitimately hate him after reading it.
You can do w/e you want now. Kill somebody, attempt to kill somebody, do massive amounts of drugs doesn't matter. Just SERVE YOUR TIME LOL what a joke, guy broke someones neck. NEVER FUC**NG apologized and I am suppose to feel bad??? NO sorry I FEEL BAD FOR DARRYL STINGLEY. I mean are you kidding me.... Think if you broke someones neck and paralyzed them from the NECK down how shattered your world would be, and in every single interview I have seen of Tatum the man NEVER ONCE showed remorse not once. Jesus man, I would not even be able to talk about it without breaking down, to know that I am responsible for a man to not even really be able to function, and not even FUC*ING APOLOGIZE!!!!
Honestly it's ok the man above will reserve judgement
Hey the dumb ass Russians mourned Stalin so go figure.
cool perspective bro
I missed the part in the obit where Tatum killed millions of innocent civilians. Look, asscocks, shit happens in football. People get paralyzed, people have fucking died on the field. You can't blame someone for one hit that happened to cause severe enough damage, what the fuck was Jack Tatum supposed to do? Not hit anyone because they might get hurt? You fucking hypocrites would probably salivate at the prospect of a Michigan safety who could hit like Tatum did and if Tatum had played for any other college you morons would be treating him like any other dead athlete from a bygone era. Seriously, you fuckers make me sick
that we are taught that such violence is not only acceptable, but necessary in football. It's not. You might not be so conciliatory towards this style of play if an 'accident' like the one which paralyzed Darryl Stingley happened to a loved one of yours. You're right, accidents happen on the football field, but when you go after someone the way Tatum did the chance of an accident increases, not to mention the severity of the injury.
I'm not attempting to villify Mr. Tatum, but his efforts towards bringing closure to the Stingley incident is lacking. As stated, his only attempts to do so also coincidentally occurred when he was pushing a book. To me is 'effort' indicates a lack of remorse; he's using football as a justification to purposefully injure another person, and that's not right.
To answer your question about a Michigan safety hitting hard like Tatum did, we had one: Daydrion Taylor. While at the time of his hit on the Penn State TE -his name escapes me- the play was a definite "YES!!!", the more time moves on, the more sadness and regret I feel about the hit; it ended the careers of both men. It irrevocably changed their lives; if Taylor had a chance to relive that moment, do you think he would do the same thing again? I don't think so.
I will also say this; I'm 47. As a younger guy I was all about the violence and now I'm a tad mellowed out.
Everybody murders, paralyzes people.
No I wouldn't want any Michigan player to try to hurt any opposing player in the manner that J.T. delivered most of his "famous" head shots.
and dangerous. We feed it with our passion. Tatum was not saying he thought it was right, he was saying we are all culpable for the harm done. I admit it, and mourn for Stingley and Tatum. May no one be a party to such pain, but...they will.
There is nothing in this sport that is different wrt this sort of injury and the Taylor Mays, Ronnie Lott and John Lynch style of play that brought it on from the time that Tatum played (and I admit it...hopefully Cam Gordon lays the wood this year like Law or Taylor...). Sometimes I wonder at myself...
right.... BUT why the hell could he never sit down and say "Darryl I never ment to hurt you, I played football with all the passion in my body , and that was the only way I knew how to play."
but no he didn't cause ya wanna know why.... Piece of shit thats why.
Anyone find it JUST A LITTLE KARMIC that Jack had one of his legs amputated
GET this.... A guy delievers a devastating hit, breaks a guy's neck never apologizes. Later in life guy has to have one leg amputated and all his toes on the other foot.... WOW NOW THAT IS KARMA
I'm old enough to remember Tatum as a pro but too young to remember or think of him as a Buckeye. All I know was that growing up he was considered the epitome of a viscious hitter and was the best at intimidating recievers coming across the middle. By all accounts the Stingley hit was legal.
He played at a different time and it is hard to judge now. Also the salaries at the time he played weren't what they are today. To make money and sell books he marketed the whole assassin thing which certainly didn't (doesn't) help in the sympathy department. The man suffered through the consequences of diabetes for several years so I don't think it is too much to offer some condolences for a guy that played hard and left it all on the field, Stalin comparisons notwithstanding.
For a decade, he got paid really well and treated like a star to try to snap men in half. He actually did it once and became a pariah.
yikes
The man was a great player. He just was.
"I like to believe that my best hits border on felonious assault."
That's football right there. If I'm an animal/asshole for thinking so, whatever. He embodied football and was the perfect example for a lot of people of why it was better than other sports.
Sometimes you just want to watch a man beat the shit out of another man. Jack Tatum was really good at it.
WTF is up with some of the comments. The man fucking died. Jesus Christ, this is neither the time nor place. Have some class.
You use the word f***ing and then Jesus's name in vain. You're a real classy guy, all right.
When people are acting like classless douche bags, sometimes strong language is necessary.
Acting like a classless douche bag while asking people to stop acting like classless douche bags makes no sense. In any event, using Jesus's name as an epithet is an act of religious bigotry and completely unnecessary.
Ok, Skunk Bear.
I'm assuming that you are not a Christian and are demonstrating your contempt for Christianity and/or those who are.
..attack upon Christianity. Talk about making a mountain out of a mole hill. your first mistake was assuming, because you know what happens when you assume.
Making baseless accusations about someone, and referring to them as a "religious biggot" is certainly classly. I'd say the second you started typing you lost any sort of moral high ground you had.
When I made that post I understood the irony of using "fucking" as well as "Jesus Christ" in a post telling others to have some class. I was well aware of my word choices, and they were not only appropriate, considering the absolute disgusting behavior exhibited on this thread, but they were, IMO, necessary.
There are no words in the English language strong enough to properly convey the disgust I felt while reading some of the comments.
You have the audacity to feel disgust at other people's comments, but no sensitivity for the disgust others may have at your comments. Now that's ironic.
Your disgust at my comment was you assuming I was a "religious biggot" and then assigning all of the characteristics of such an individual to my person. You made baseless assumptions about my post and then worked yourself into a frenzy over something that wasn't there.
So no, its not the same thing as someone else calling for eternal damnation and verbally defecating on someone who has just died.
I could call it ironic that you called me a religious biggot, and are now proceeding to feel faux-outrage over the fact that I made a comment that offended you, but i won't, because I have more class than that.
Now you're just being offended for the sake of being offended.
Talk about assumptions.
First off, I didn't call you a "religious biggot", I called the act of using Jesus's name as an epithet an act of religious bigotry. You know "hate the sin, love the sinner".
Secondly, I didn't assign any characteristics to you except to assume that because you used Jesus's name as an epithet that you weren't Christian.
Thirdly, I am quite calm and in no "frenzy".
Fourthly, my "outrage" (your word) is not "faux".
For somebody who opposes baseless assumptions you are quite quick to make them.
btw, "bigot" has one "g".
'
Jesus Christ will you shut the fuck up about it already?!
Jesus H. fucking tappdancing Christ, stop.
I would describe anyone who gets this offended over nothing as being in a frenzy, regardless of whether or not you are jumping up and down pointing at your computer screen.
I may not have been 100% correct in my use of language, but holy Joseph Smith Buddha, you are waaaaaay out in left field.
It is not "nothing" and your failure to grasp that is amazing.
I seriously doubt you would make offensive comments about Judaism to a Jewish person or Islam to a Muslim. No, that would be politically incorrect and you wouldn't dare.
But you do give yourself license to offend Christians. Why? Let me guess: Because you figure you can get away with it. Hell, you can even get support doing it. Just look at all the posbangs you've gotten and all the negs I've gotten. It still doesn't make it right.
btw. can you see your own frustration? I'm not the one in a "frenzy". You are.
You're using the role of "good christian" to fight a guy using a widespread colloquialism rather than to fight the man who hopes the recently deceased rots in hell. I hope you see how absurd you are.
defending Don. And this whole thing would have been over after my first reply to LP if LP had either simply apologized or not responded back.
Btw, chitown, remember that you took offense at the use of "shyster" I agree with your criticism of its use. It is also not uncommon from what I understand. I would have guessed you would have taken my side in this.
I'm not thinking that you're defending Don. I think it odd that you're using a sense of Christianity to address a matter of syntax over a matter of a guy holding irrational hatred of a recently deceased man. It shows where your priorities lie.
Second, "shyster" is, explicity, an insult. Just like "kyke", "spic", "towel-head", or any other term you want to come up with. Last Prophet did not use the term "Jesus Christ" as an insult - it's an exclamation, or, if you're being specific, an invocation. "Shyster", in common usage (though not at it's source) leans on Jewish stereotypes of usury, cheapness, etc. I can't think of any such negative stereotypes associated with the name of Christianity's savior.
was make a simple comment. LP, who objects to people making "baseless assumptions", proceeds to fly off the handle and make repeated baseless assumptions about me. I end up replyimg over and over to someone who insists on exaggerating. If you would, please reread the exchange and tell me where I went wrong.
It was not my idea to make a big deal of this, but LP insists on playing the victim here.
