Saints Will Smith shot and killed

Submitted by Monkey House on

Saturday night Smith was killed in a road rage accident. His wife was shot twice in the legs. Thoughts with this family and friends.

One of my best friends is a public defender in NOLA (she's a fucking saint).  It's a vicious cycle down there of violence, incarceration, insane poverty, entire neighborhoods still in shambles from Katrina, and zero public services.  It's pretty much a third world country.

I don't think most Americans understand what New Orleans has become post Katrina.  It's a damned shame that this level of poverty can exist in the richest country in the world.

Have you heard of (or watched) The People vs. O.J. Simpson?  That's actually the first season in a series called American Crime Story, and the second season will focus on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.  It could go a long way in bringing that particular world to light for many Americans, like myself, who still don't know that much about what happened there.

Wow. Something dumb like a small accident and now a whole bunch of people's lives are forever changed. Material possessions are not worth fighting over.

Looking at the time and location of the incident, I think it is safe to assume at least some of those involved had consumed some alcohol. Anger + guns + alcohol will never end well. I avoid confrontation at all costs, as MICHandCHIPS, said too many psychopaths out there. Even getting punched and falling and hitting your head on a table, curb, sidewalk can leave you damaged and changed for life or dead.

I agree. A safe default assumption with many people is CRAZY. Apply a late-at-night multiplier, too, and remember that it's more likely with each passing year that the person will be armed, especially in a place that has a Deep South element. The Deep South and Appalachian (less important in this case) cultures are historically violent ones.

Neither is East St. Louis, the southside of Chicago and hundreds of other parts of cities around the country.

Data or no data...danger and crazy folks are everywhere. You just have to be smart, choose your battles wisely, and hope for the best. Many times, that's not even enough.

Thinking on it more, I could see this becoming a self defense incident as well. Since the shooter rear ended Smith, it is possible Smith, as a large man, came out of his car yelling and threatening the shooter. Plus the fact that the other car contained Smith"s friend, maybe the shooter felt out numbered and scared. By no means is that an excuse to shoot Smith and his wife multiple times, but the details that will come out in the coming hours and days may change how this situation is viewed.

since Smith was shot behind the wheel that his wife was sitting beside him and was hit with some stray bullets in the legs.  Or maybe I have just watched too much CSI.

In any case, it's not self defense if Smith's in his car so the shooter is not in danger, he's actually the aggressor who left his car and approached Smith's window.

Just drove home from FL and can honestly say there are a TON of idiots out there on the road. And if they don't care about running you off the road and killing you and your family they probably don't mind carrying a gun and doing you in that way as well.
Needless to say my heart goes out to his family. Senseless tragedy.

Geez.  Half of the people in this world are absolutely nuts, perhaps more.  Many of them would act violently given the right circumstance.  Its always best to turn and walk away in situations like this.  Living out here in crazy LA, Ive had quite a few instances when I did absoutely nothing at all to provoke them.  I used to have this Red Porsche, an older one from the 80s that incited nutcase behavior all of the time.  People intentionally slowing down to a crawl in front of me, and then not allowing me to pass and cutting me off, others yelling and flipping me off.  Its a big reason why I sold that car.

A couple of months ago, I had a "road rage" incident just backing out of my garage when this girl ran in to me (actually we barely tapped going 1 or 2 mph) no damage... and her crazy boyfriend went nuts.  The kid lives in the building next to me and I know that someday something else will come of that.  Totally her fault and this asshole went off on me.

Just 3 weeks ago, I was at a meeting for work sitting with 3 other people by a window...and someone drove by and took a shot at us with a rifle.  The bullet whizzed over my head within 2 feet.  I still cant believe that happened...but it did!  That close to death just sittting there in a meeting.

The world is full of asshole crazy people.  People that I grew up included crazy, abusive family members and one of my closest friends growing up who ended up raping and murdering a little boy.  I've had so many violent incidents in my life, completely unprovoked that Ive come to expect it.

This is why Id put the number at 1/2 or more with major mental issues.

I wonder some times if I draw this type of cra-cra towards me?  But I dont do anything to hurt anyone...so it cant be that?  Perhaps I think too negatively and the negative comes as a result of expecting the worse?  Law of attraction stuff....

Watch your backs good people...and your fronts too.

Not sure what you mean by "insane shit", but I live in SF, and it's incredibly safe.

Lived in Detroit, Chicago, DC and here, and there's no comparison; SF is easily the safest big city I've lived in.

Single women regularly walk around at night alone, and apart from one sketchy public housing development on Potrero, there's not a single part of SF I feel in any way unsafe, even late at night (and yes, that includes the Tenderloin; compared to rough neighborhoods in DC, Chi, NYC, Baltimore, NO, Detroit, Atl, it's nothing).

Oakland and Richmond/Vallejo can be sketchy, but the rest of the entire bay area is remarkably safe. San Jose is probably the safest big city in the US (maybe the most boring too).

Don't get me wrong, there's a TON of stupid petty crime here. My old convertible top was slashed so many times I stopped reparing it. If that's what you meant by "insane shit" I'm on board.

Wow.  I have spent a ton of time in SF and I can not agree with you.

Women in particularly should not walk around anywhere at night alone.

Austin TX was considered pretty safe too.  Did you see what happened on campus down there this past week?

You're of course entitled to your opinion, but it's a fact that every night - every night - I see many unaccompanied women walking around.

Whether they "should" is up to those women to decide, not me or you. My gf often works nights, and safely takes the bus and walks home alone past midnight.

I don't have kids, but I sincerely hope my niece has the freedom, confidence, awareness and peace of mind to experience life to the fullest, including walking the streets on her own.

It's also a fact that according to the FBI, in 2013 there were 7,064 violent crimes in SF, out of a population of 833,863. That's 8 for every 1,000 people, and includes assault and robbery. There were 48 murders (compared to 27 pedestrians killed by cars).

It's very likely a substantial number of those violent crimes (and murders) were committed in drug/gang related incidents, where both perpetrator and victim were involved in criminal or violent behavior.

Going out in the world involves risk, and bad things happen to good people.

That doesn't change my belief that SF is quite safe in general, and especially for a large American city.

...if you live in Los Angeles, it sounds like you need to live/work in a much better neighborhood. When kids used a BB gun to shoot out store front windows at night it was a primetime news story...if someone shot at my office building they would shut down the whole neighborhood.

When you are abused physically growing up...and even today people challenge you consistently over nothing...and a bullet goes over you head that had nothing to do with you... its not you who caused it.

I'm terribly sorry you experienced abuse.

I can see how that could impact your worldview, and even your day-to-day interactions.

That doesn't invalidate my statement. It's just not rational to believe that 1/2 the people in this country are "crazy", or violent, or out to cause you harm.

According to FBI stats, just 3/10 of 1% of people - that's 3 out of 1,000 were victims of violent crimes in 2013 (most recent stats listed).  Their definition includes simple assault and robbery, so we're not talking only about rape and murder.

Fortunately, violent crime in the US has decreased pretty dramatically.

Don't get me wrong, I know there are bad people out there, and life can be cruel and ugly. That said, the vast, vast majority of people are basically law abiding and have nothing against you or me.

Here's the ESPN story - LINK

Smith was shot multiple times, and his wife, Racquel, also 34, was shot twice in the right leg, according to police. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene, while his wife was taken to a hospital.

Good Morning, America just ran with some parts of the story too, and the 911 call indicated that Smith had been shot as many as six times in the chest. Unbelievable that someone could do that over something as trivial in the grand scheme as damage to an automobile, and incredibly tragic that someone died because an idiot couldn't handle their emotions.

ESPN article says he's in custody and being "interviewed." I wouldn't be surprised if some of the questions pertain to whether he is afraid of needles. Unfortunately for him, Louisiana has the death penalty.
