sad day now that we know zeigler is going to cmu
Committing seppuku with the other.
That being said my Dad would have gone The Great Santini on me if I turned down his scholarship.
for the 60's era child abuse reference. We watched this movie in grade school religion class.
...Trey went to Central.....and not Western Michigan....or even worse- Sparty land.
Can't blame a kid for wanting to play for his dad- Insert Disney Movie here????
Great to play for Dad...but, I think if I was the dad i would encourage my son to go to a big time academic school and program. In 20 years, when basketball is a distant memory, a Duke, UCLA, or U of M education is going to do him more good than the memories of playing his dad at CMU.
That being said, best of luck to him. He should be able to be all-world in the MAC.
Maybe it was his dream to play for his dad and for his dad to coach his son. He looked around and figured that this may be the best chance to spend time with his father while they pursued their dream together.
Probably not a popular view on this board but I don't care for the view that the UM degree will determine the height of his success. There is no doubt that it will open the door but he will determine what happens from that point. If he wants a future in BBall or coaching he already has all the contacts and this will only increase.

UMich credentials carry weight, sure, but in TZ's case the chasm between here and CMU might not matter. It all depends on his field. If he has medical/law school on the agenda, sure, he'd be wise to pick a better school. But, if he's going to be a player/coach in basketball (or a champion ball-bearing salesman), I think he'll be fine.

Success or failure in life depends much more in an individual's work ethic and intelligence than the name on the degree a person holds.
UM is a great school and if I were the kid's dad, I'd probably lean towards recommending UM. But the kid is still going to receive a good education while playing for his dad. Eitherway, he cannot go wrong.
Duke education Michigan education CMU education, obviously.

What does DOG The Bounty Hunter (June 20 - On Sale Apr 16!!) do for a show? I know he has a TV show but what could he possibly perform live? Maybe they just sit around and watch episodes? Seriously, this is bugging me, does anyone know?

I didn't know he got any business outside of East Lansing.

Go with Christ, brah.
The bearded woman could be with him?
And his wife also crushes him during sex.
/Boom. Roasted.
As we all know there are more reasons to picking a college than just education.
There is some buzz up here at CMU that Trey is staying close to home not just for his father, but so he can stay close to his girlfriend and family.
And yes, CMU is no Michigan or Duke, but it is a fine institution just like any other college minus the "State" colleges (insert MSU/OSU academic inferiority jokes here).
He'll have a peaceful home-life and guaranteed obscurity. Hope he makes it big from (and it is weird saying this) Central Michigan...
It is not unprecidented actually; Dan Majerle and Chris Kaman are two All-Star caliber pros from CMU.
So, what you're saying is, CMU is guaranteed to have an NBA caliber player once every fifteen years or so? Pretty potent argument there...
He said it was not unprecedented in response to the comment about guaranteed obscurity. He actually did have a potent argument, as it was backed up by EVIDENCE.
Michigan BB's record for NBA players isn't that much better.
FYI, you're definitely getting negbombed for that. No probably about it.
This is the entire list of CMU players in NBA/ABA history from basketballreference.com:
Huffman, Nate 2002-2002 Iverson, Willie 1968-1968 Kaman, Chris 2003-2007 Kelso, Ben 1973-1973 Majerle, Dan 1988-2001 McElroy, Jim 1975-1981 Poquette, Ben 1977-1986 Roundfield, Dan 1975-1986
Agreed. Jamal Crawford then ???? in the last 15 years.
April 14th, 2010 at 11:05 AM ^
does Jamal Crawford even count?
he played in 17 games...
April 14th, 2010 at 11:07 AM ^
was on a squad for a hot minute, I remember seeing him in a Bobcats uni.
And Chris Hunter had a nice little story playing in a few games this season after tearing up the D-League.
Shining examples....ugh.
April 14th, 2010 at 11:32 AM ^
He's actually played quite a bit for Golden State this year. Averaging 4.6 points and 2.8 boards in 13 min a game, not too bad. He even dropped 22 in a game against the lakers.
April 14th, 2010 at 11:47 AM ^
Don't forget about Courtney Sims. Didn't he play a bit for an NBA team?
Juwan who still is playing, Maceo Baston, Tim McCormick, Big Shot Glen Rice, Loy Vaught, Terry Mills and if you want to go old school Rudy Tomjanovich
April 14th, 2010 at 11:41 AM ^
Yeah but BR Jr is a huge perv. Just ask the girls who worked in the mail room. Or you could ask the girl he corned in the stairwell.
False. If he's citing Majerle as evidence of CMU players in the NBA, then we can go back to 1988 too (the year Majerle was drafted). We put something like 4 players from that 1989 team in the League alone? That's not counting the Fab Five. So you've got nine in a span of a few years. Since then, things have dramatically slowed down, but if he's going back to Majerle then you've gotta let UM go back that far too - in which case, UM has done FAR better.
For the record, here's a list of U-M players in the NBA since 1988 (in order by first year in the league):
Rickey Green 1978-1992
Phil Hubbard 1980-1989
Mike McGee 1982-1990
Tim McCormick 1985-1992
Roy Tarpley 1987-1995
Richard Rellford 1988-1988
Gary Grant 1989-2001
Glen Rice 1990-2004
Sean Higgins 1991-1998
Terry Mills 1991-2001
Rumeal Robinson 1991-1997
Loy Vaught 1991-2001
Demetrius Calip 1992-1992
Eric Riley 1994-1999
Chris Webber 1994-2008
Juwan Howard 1995-2010
Jalen Rose 1995-2007
Jimmy King 1996-1997
Maurice Taylor 1998-2007
Robert Traylor 1999-2005
Jamal Crawford 2001-2010
Maceo Baston 2003-2009
Bernard Robinson 2005-2007
Courtney Sims 2008-2009
Chris Hunter 2010-2010
Howevea,I wish nothing but the best for the young man...
Disappointing, but it would have stung so much more if Trey had chosen MSU over us. As it is, hard to fault Beilein for not being able to recruit a prospect away from his father. No coach has been able to pull that off since Obi-Wan Kenobi kept Luke from being seduced by the Dark Side.
...just goes to show I'll never completely understand this board...
It will take me about ten seconds to get over it, just like it does when any kid Michigan recruited hard goes to another school, but there are plenty of players out there and plenty of players on the team to think about.
He would have been a great addition, but it apparently isn't happening. After today's presser makes if official, you can bet that JB won't waste a lot of time thinking about what might have been; he will be too busy doing his job.
I agree with the poster who compared his situation to a Disney movie. I'm happy to see him play for his dad. I hope he plays well there except when he plays against Michigan.
Goodbye Trey
We'll see you in the 5/12 matchup

I hope your not implying were going to be a 5 seed in 2 years. Get that out of your mind now, because your setting yourself up for disaster.
April 14th, 2010 at 12:09 PM ^
you're reasoning is sound
Anyone address the possibility of Beilein attempting to add Daddy Ziegler to his coaching staff? It was the first thing I thought of when we were told about Dunn/Mahoney but I haven't seen anyone mention it.
I realize it's not going to happen now anyway, with CMU signing him to a 4 year deal, but I would not have been surprised if an attempt was made by Beilein either.
at CMU > than an assistant spot at Michigan.
Awesome.
Were there any rumors that his dad was using this recruitment process as some sort of leverage for personal gain?
It certainly appears that this was all about the CMU contract extension.
.... seems like a fact right about now. 4 more years @ $200K.
For the Zeigler family it's really legal pay-to-play. Good for them.
Sucks for UM.
Would rather we have gotten him but I don't think I would characterize the day as sad. That would be hinging my mood swings on the decision of a high school student I have never met as to where he will attend college...so sad is not on for this.
We'll take the court with the guys that want to be here. JB knows what he is doing.
In the meantime on to football, which is going to truly rock.
you experience a lot of emotions over something that really plays no significant part on your personal well being.
Are you not happy when a highly rated "high school student" chooses Michigan? Are you indifferent? Is there a different emotion to describe how you feel?
I think "sad" is a fair description of how a lot of fans felt after Zeigler's announcement, even if it was a foregone conclusion. I know that I wasn't indifferent about it and I certainly wasn't happy.
I thought this was inevidable. All signs pointed to this, from his Dad getting a new contract, a new basketball arena opening and the way the Mount Pleasant community accepted the Ziegler family. I wish the best for him and hope MSU and Ohio State pop-up on their schedules so he can kicks their butts.
Smooth move by the AD at CMU to give his father a 4 year extension....
Yes, very sad indeed. I don't know how I'll live the rest of my life without a Trey Zeigler commitment. How will I go on? Who do I turn to? What a damn shame. It feels like I just got hit in the nuts. It feels like my shiny new schwinn bicycle has been stolen. So sad, so sad, so very, very sad indeed.
Dear Trey
May life be gentle with you
May God's best come your way;
And on some quiet tomorrow
You will realize things were better this way.

Some reason this isnt impacting me much. Not a big college hoops fan anyways but would always want to see UM #1. Like Jay Z said...."on to the next one!"
