S Shumate adds Michigan to Top 5

Submitted by the monarch on
ESPN Insider rumor says S Elijah Shumate's has added Michigan to his top 5, joining leaders Rutgers and South Carolina. He apparently keeps changing around the other three. Haven't heard much about this kid on the board. Anyone have info on him?

Using the Scout search function, he's listed as a solid 4* -  #7 Safety (in the 85-95 range overall) from Ramsey, NJ.  Listed at 6'1", 205 lbs. with a 4.50 40.

I believe he is a big safety, either a strong safety or future WLB.  With all the SS on the roster (Robinson, Kovacs, Furman, T. Gordon, and Gant coming in 2012) and no room for anymore LBs, not sure how much need we have for a tweener SS/LB.

We need 1 legit Free Safety in this class.

Either way, I was under the impression he is destined for South Carolina.

Part of the Don Bosco Prep group with Caroo (4* WR), Hamilton (5* DE), and Wright (4* CB).  I'd be beyond thrilled if we could get Shumate and  some of his friends out for a visit.

I'm wondering if this placement is reflective an increased pursuit of Shumate (possibly supporting the idea people were putting forth with the whole Morgan deal that the staff wants a "true" safety).

That is a loaded team.  Besides the ones you listed they have an OL that is committed to UConn and a MLB that has BCS offers.

I'm sure this might be one of the best classes to come out of Don Bosco, but they seem to consistently have D1 type prospects.  It wouldn't hurt to establish a pipeline at a school like that.

trust them to do what is best.  When you are trying to upgrade the talent level on your roster, especially on D, to compete nationally and in Big 10, you take the top athletes.  Have seen recent quotes from our coaches to the effect that while they have to fill some needs, there is room for top athletes.  I think this will be particularily the case witht the last 7 to 10 recruits in this class.

Those who try to figure out this class w/ some positional recipe are a bit misguided.  I was an athlete for M and have followed recruiting since the early 70's and these people who think they have figured out a  hard and fast position recipe crack me up.

that if Shumate has a top two of Rutgers and SC, and Morgan has left us for Rutgers, that would be elevating SC (and maybe us) a little bit . . . .

Deciding before his senior season

One of the first 3 safeties ND offered, has yet to visit though.  One of the reasons he cited for being interested in ND was the last recruiting class, he is looking to join a loaded team, not looking to be the top recruit in a class I guess.  Which makes me wonder why rutgers is so high on his list

His full top 5: Notre Dame, Rutgers, Georgia, Michigan and South Carolina

His last top 5: UConn, North Carolina, Penn State, Rutgers and South Carolina.  I am curious as to why he dropped PSU
