S Ray Vinopal Offered

Submitted by umhero on
Apparently Michigan has offered this lightly regarded safety from Youngstown Ohio Cardinal Mooney. "Michigan just offered me today as a safety," Vinopal said on Wednesday night. i saw his tape on rivals. mildly impressive. it does sound like we are getting a bit desperate. but who cares, we need players in the secondary. we can take almost as many as 30 recruits this year with all the early enrollees. gotta get those scholarship numbers up somehow.

Why does everyone keep saying that we can sign 28-30 players? I've seen this dozens of times on UM boards and I just dont see how you guys are coming up with this number. Throw out the argument about whether or not you can count some as early enrollees, you still cant have more than 85 players on scholarship. Here is scholarship players returning next year plus the commits. QB: Tate-So Denard-So Sheridan-5th Cone-5th Jones-Fr DG-Fr RB: Shaw-Jr Smith-So Cox-So Toussaint-RFr White-Fr Hopkins-Fr WR: Stonum-Jr Hemmingway-Jr Stokes-So Roundtree-So (see more PT here than in the slot) Gordon-RFr Miller-Fr Williamson-Fr Jackson-Fr J Robinson-Fr Slot: Odoms-Jr Grady-Jr T Rob-So Gallon-Rfr Drake-Fr Dileo-Fr TE: Koger-Jr Webb-Sr Moore-So OL: Barnum-So Omameh-So Molk-Jr Schilling-5th Huyge-Jr Mealer-So Schofield-RFr Washington-RFr Lewan-RFr Khoury-So Dorrestein-5th Ferrera-5th Pace-Fr DT: Martin-Jr Campbell-So Banks-5th Sagasse-Sr Talbott-Fr DE: Van Bergen-Jr Patterson-5th LaLota-RFr Paskorz-Fr Quick: Roh-So Herron-Jr Watson-Jr Wilkins-Fr LB: Ezeh-5th Mouton-5th B Smith-So Hawthorne-So M Jones-So Bell-RFr Fitz-Jr Demens-So Kinard-Fr CB: Warren-Sr (assuming he stays) Woolfolk-Sr Turner-RFr T Jones-So Floyd-So Rogers-Sr Avery-Fr Talbott-Fr FS: Williams-Jr T Gordon-RFr Kovacs-So SS: Vlad-So M Robinson-Fr C.Johnson Special Teams: Gibbons-RFr Hagerup-Fr Wright-5th So as of right now, we have 62 scholarship players returning plus 20 recruits. Therefore, we only have 3 to give out. RR has already said Kovacs will be on scholarship and I didnt include guys like Leach, Morales and Moundrous because I wasnt sure if they were on scholarship. NOW, we can give more than 3 if some guys dont return. 5th year guys like Cone, maybe Sheridan, maybe Patterson, maybe Wright. IF all 4 of those guys dont return, we could technically be able to sign 7 more players. But I'm not sure all wont return. Add in Witty possibly coming back and its pretty safe to say we arent going to sign 28 players. Looking like 24 or 25 unless there is more unseen attrition. Also keep in mind that our 2011 class looks like is only going to be 11-13 players at this point. I'm sure it will swell a little as some guys leave, but its going to be a small class. Something to think about for guys that keep insisting we "Take everyone, we need the numbers". It doesnt always work that way, scholarships are limited and they have to be used wisely.

First of all, there are about four guys who are very unlikely to get a fifth year of eligibility. Warren might leave early for the NFL. There's ALWAYS some attrition, whether it's grades or transfers for playing time or people getting booted off the team. So I think we'll have a full class of 25, and by the time signing day comes around, we could probably take more if we were allowed.

I agree that there is 3 or 4 guys that wont get a 5th and I do think we will sign 25. But it seems like everyone always gets wrapped up in how many we are allowed to sign by rule and forgets about the 85 scholarship thing. Everyone seems to want Patterson, Banks, Wright ect to stick around but they also want us to sign 30 players and it doesnt work that way. I'm more concerned about 2011. We will need a strong class and we dont have a lot of scholarships to give out. Hopefully some guys that dont have a future here find their way out so we can get up to 17 or 18 at least.

Actually, I haven't seen many people at all who want Wright and Patterson to stick around. Regardless, I don't really care if we have 11 or 20 scholarships open for 2011. If we have 11 open scholarships, that means we have 74 kids with experience returning for the next year. If we have 20 open scholarships, that means we have 65 returning players (more than we had this year) and an influx of fresh faces. Either way is pretty good.
