Ryan Van Bergen Opening Gym in AA / Minor Recruiting update

Submitted by Bodogblog on

Nice story, sounds like it would be a kick.  I'd join up if I lived in the area.  Officially opens on Monday.  Apparently they have taken the Dave Brandon approach to loudspeakers.  Blue Lion Fitness, 2415 W. Stadium Blvd.

Nice bearding as well.

Unrelated but re. M football, there are two recent 247 Crystal Ball updates for Michigan.  The first is Korey Banks, a 3* CB from Georgia who was apparently offered by Michigan yesterday.  He has no other major offers.  Looks like he visited Sparty yesterday as well, they don't seem to have offered.  The second is local kid David Reese, a 3* ILB from Farmington, and teammate of WR Desmond Fitzpatrick, who Michigan has also offered. Reese is committed to Louisville, which is his only other non-MAC offer.  Fitzpatrick is also committed to Louisville.

Regarding Korey Banks, he's a fast kid (claims a 4.26 forty) but is pretty scrawny right. I'm a little surprised Michigan pulled the trigger on him.

I'm also surprised Michigan offered David Reese this early. I really thought that if Michigan offered him, it would be a Grant Perry type of situation late in the process.

I don't really see Banks as a kick return specialist, because usually the guys who are true "return specialists" are guys who can do both kicks/punts. You can't really afford to spend scholarships on guys who are "just kick returners" or "just punt returners." Considering that, I don't see Banks as an ideal punt returner, so I would think they want him as a receiver while possibly returning some kicks on the side.

I would be curious which school Korey Banks originally had planned to come up to visit - MSU or UM.  MSU does a good job taking those athletes  and making them damn good corners - last GA guy at corner they got had 2 stars and went in the 1st round.   Sort of wish if we were going to offer MSU had as well.

I was trying to find a story about him but it appears there were a few players who came up together and went to WMU, MSU, and Michigan. I saw a photo of one of them at EMU also. Korey Banks also visited Wisconsin so this may simply be a trip through the midwest.

Word is that he is starting to pick up steam. He was at the Adidas camp in Georgia and was rated 11th at the camp by one source at Rivals.

I also noticed that a Sparty analyst was the first to put in a Crystal Ball to Michigan.

"We want everyone to have access to the equipment that they would have to pay a lot for or they would only have that access if they did compete in collegiate or professional athletics," Roth said. "We go through the proper channels to get you there."

If I am thinking of the right area along W. Stadium, you also get access to a Subway and a liquor store, so there is that, but more seriously, hopefully this takes off and is successful. I would imagine that there are probably people who are curious as to what the regimen is like and would give it a go at least.

Good luck to Van Bergen in this venture.
