Russell Bellomy Is Back, Shane Is Taking First Team Snaps, and Gardner Is Out This Week

Submitted by MJ14 on

In practice on Tuesday, freshman quarterback Shane Morris took snaps with the first team as Gardner's replacement. However, Hoke also announced that quarterback Russell Bellomy -- who suffered a torn ACL last spring -- returned to practice Tuesday, as well.

Michigan quarterback Devin Gardner will miss practice this week at least until Thursday with a turf toe injury.

Devin should be fine for the bowl game. I like the idea that Shane is getting a chance to get some first team reps. Also good to hear Bellomy is back.

I might be the one person on this blog that still thinks that bellomy isn't terrible. He had a really poor performance vs Nebraska in his first and only game ever. Not sure if you guys noticed but he was facing all out blitz and didn't handle it well. I mean if you guys watched devin under pressure this year, he was far from composed either. Bellomy had a very good spring game in 2012 and we were all excited. I don't think it's time to write him off just yet. Sorry I might be the one wearing the crazy hat in this conversation but I honestly think he could handle second string duties just fine.

Came in during one series because DR got dinged, and threw an INT.  BFD.

You know nothing about Bellomy, I know nothing about Bellomy, I submit nobody that contributes on this board knows anything about Bellomy other than he's looked good during spring and fall practice.  Here's a novel idea, why don't we let those who see and evaluate him on a daily basis make the decisions.

"why don't we let those who see and evaluate him on a daily basis make the decisions"

Not sure if serious, but these types of comments crack me up.  Like we have any choice.  This is tantamount to another of my favorites: "mods, feel free to delete if..."

While I'm sure the UM coaches and MGoMods appreciate fans and message board users  granting them permission to do their jobs, I don't think it's really necessary.

GoBLU: I know plenty about Bellomy. I was his pastor when he was in High School. I know he has had injuries that have been extremely unfortunate in timing. I know he works his butt off and does everything the coaches ask. I know he isn't a quitter and will do his best to contribute to this team at the highest level possible. I know he does not take for granted the opportunity given him and with all that, I am extremely proud of him and wish him the very best.

EDIT: I understand I look through rose colored glasses. I am biased.

Wasn't his interception a pass that was right to his wr that bounced off his hands right into a DB's or LB? I'm kind in the opinion that we really don't know anything about him other about 5 drives in his rs freshmen season. He might be a jack Kennedy or he might be a serviceable qb. I don't know and niether does anyone else. It drives me nuts that everyone on this board thinks he's terrible because he crapped his pants vs Nebraska while being put on his back every time he dropped back.

It all depends on our running game...as per usual. If we average -2 yds on first down like we did the first 10 games then it will put a lot of pressure on the qb to make reads and our WRs to get separation. Our first string qb struggled with the latter this year. Not sure throwing our second stringer into the fire will be optimal either...SO.... Here's to hoping our Oline is functional in The run game.

For all intensive purposes Shane could still be the back up QB and take the 2nd team reps in practice however Bellomy would take 2nd team game reps/mop up duty and any helmet off wasted snap plays in the hopes of redshirting Shane. If Devin is lost for any significant time Shane would essentially burn his redshirt and take over. The reason they didn't use Cleary in the Bellomy role this year is because they felt Shane needed the game reps in mop up time.

Redshirting doesn't mean he's behind Bellomy on the depth chart. You can still practice with the 2nd team in practice. You can still gameplan and prepare like the backup QB. I hate this thought that's like if you redshirt, you're not on the team for a year. You just go to class and that's it. No, he can do everything the same...it's just about GAME experience. If DG was hurt, you'd put Morris in. If you're up 40 in the 4th vs. a MAC school. You put Bellomy in. Or what if you're not up or down by enough in ANY game? As we've seen, that's not impossible.

On one hand you have Speight, who I'm pretty high on, but he's a true freshman, needs to add some speed to his delivery, and hasn't had any college training at all.

On the other hand you have a person in his 3rd or 4th year in the system at a college level. I could easily see Bellomy being ahead of Speight next year, and, in fact, I bet it happens.

The problem with the theory of "give Shane the 2nd team snaps but redshirt him" is - how does Bellomy become a legitimate backup in that scenario? The guy's gotta practice sometime, and he hasn't been getting meaningful practice snaps in a year. You can't put a guy in in that scenario, even for a series. At that point you might as well direct snap it to your RB for all the good having a QB back there will do you.

Shane Morris will redshirt if and only if Bellomy is the real-deal second string QB. This is not 100% implausible, but it seems unlikely. Of course, there's the 2012 scenario where they brought Gardner back online quickly when it was clear Denard couldn't throw the rest of the season, but that sort if proves my point - Bellomy was getting the 2nd team snaps until after the Nebraska game.

ESPN is again reporting that Brown is resigning...

Texas doesn't look to have any commits that Michigan would recruit. If Saban went, Bama has Hand and possibly RB Bo Scarbrough.

Unless Texas knows 100% that Saban is coming, IMO, this isn't a good move. Sumlin and Briles have signed longterm deals. Strong is probably be the best candidate left, and he's going to be around next year and the year after if you wanted him then.

Texas has two commits whom Michigan offered, but neither one looked at Michigan seriously.

Michigan offered a few Alabama commits, and David Cornwell is also committed to the Crimson Tide, along with Ohioan Derek Kief and Iowan Ross Pierschbacher.

However, Michigan has their QB...and they took him over Cornwell. They're also full at WR so Kief is out. The Iowa kid flipped from Iowa and has been committed since August...pretty safe to say if he goes anywhere, it's back to Iowa (or Wisconsin where he camped). IMO he falls in your Texas commits that never looked at Michigan seriously category. Hand is really the only one...but I mentioned Scarborough because we've gone back and forth on whether we're going to recruit a RB. Plus he's waivering.

I highly doubt that Texas would push Brown out without already having a hire in place. The question now is whether this planned hire is Saban.

Here is Chantel Jennings' article, undoubtedly the place from which the OP got his quotable material - (LINK)

Hoke basically says that they are going to be cautious but that he expects Devin to be OK for the bowl game, which is reassuring. The extra practices hopefully will benefit Morris and Bellomy (assuming he is at least near 100%) as well.

Because I'd assume Lewan and Schofield are sitting for the most part.

I'm really interested as to who kicks out to OT next year. I'm going to assume the following:

1st Team: Braden / Bosch / Glasgow / Kalis / Magnuson

2nd Team: Tuley-Tillman / Bryant / Miller / Burzynski / Fox

Kugler, Bars, Dawson and Samuelson will certainly challenge for PT.

Magnus

It won't take much to make the two-deep as a true tackle. Michigan doesn't really have a whole lot. The walk-on guys are gone (Gunderson, Mateus), as are Lewan and Schofield, obviously. If Tuley-Tillman is third string, that means he's behind guys who should be guards but might be able to play tackle in a pinch (Kalis, Dawson). The tackles on the roster are basically Magnuson, Braden, Fox, Tuley-Tillman, and then Bushell-Beatty coming in 2014.

But we got no one else. You could make an argument that he and Braden are the only two scholarship guys on the TEAM with the ideal height/body/build and potential skillset for LT. We've done a great job on the interior line (thank God after watching this team)...very disappointed that we didn't get a LT in this class. Still time and we didn't have many options...but IMO we've always needed one. He's a freshman so I'm gonna get killed...but I don't see LTT ever being a legitimate starter before his RS senior year. I hope I'm wrong. Would be nice to have the next #77 redshirting next year.

I just wasn't the biggest fan from what I've seen. I desperately hope I'm wrong. But that's just me, he seemed out of shape, sloppy and a little soft. Seemed like a project, I understand the offer...no question. If he hits the potential I'm sure he's all conference. And I didn't say he wouldn't be, I just said it would be awhile. But I'm not going off of offer sheets or something I read. Just a personal opinion/prediction. I said the same about that Posada kid who never enrolled. I also think it's going to take Dawson another couple years (but sooner than LTT, however he has more competition). Kugler and Bosch were the guys I thought would lead that stellar class of OL. I'm not claim to be Tom Lemming or Ace or Magnus on this one...simply a thought. It's unlikely that they ALL pan out.

Mr. Yost

December 10th, 2013 at 11:05 PM ^

Hopefully Braden (or Magnuson if Braden is RT and Mags is LT) is the real deal and that buys us time to get a couple more OTs in the '15 class. It'll be very interesting to see who the 3rd OT is. Bryant is clearly the 3rd guard unless Miller beats Glasgow out. You also have Burzynski if he a. Returns and b. Is healthy. However, at OT you have Braden who rumored to be your LG in August of this year and Magnuson who has played both LG and RG this year and started at LG vs. OSU. Even still if you consider them "natural" OTs...you probably have Fox and Samuelson battling for the 3rd OT spot unless they kick Kalis out to OT and bring in one of the guards that I mentioned.
