Rushing the court article on ESPN
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/news/story?id=4961547
As advertised, there's an article up on ESPN about teams rushing the court at times when it is perhaps not warranted. I guess I'm glad Michigan didn't make the list of teams that embarrassingly rushed the court at an inappropriate time, although I wouldn't have been surprised. I don't hate the idea of rushing the court more often than the 'Once every 20 years or so' suggestion in the article, but I do agree that it really should be a spontaneous, no-thought, overwhelming-emotion event that defines a pivotal moment in a program's history. I know some folks were hard on UM when they rushed the court earlier this season (after UConn?), but I'm curious to see what you all think of this article.
Maybe this has already been beaten to death...
year for basketball I don't see how it would be on the list.
Does the fact that we beat Minnesota's ASS last night tarnish Indiana's court rushing? And yes, I just wanted to remind everyone that we beat Minnesota's ASS last night.
grimey gopher guts.
Au revoir, gopher.
Karl...greens keeper extrodinaire?
Goonga goongaloonga!
No, the whole thing was a quote from Carl Spackler.
Rushing the court is an emotional response to winning a great game or beating a great opponent. If students are rushing the court, it means they're excited. Who cares what the social norms are... if the students feel that a game was worthy of rushing the court, so be it.
I'm rushing the court next season when we play whatever random crap school we start the year off with. I'll be that excited for a new season.
Philosophically, that'd be just fine with your idea. I just can't justify that.
You'll end up looking like that ECU fan who got hammered by the cops on the field a year or two ago. At least you'll make the news...
your hypothetical situation isn't remotely close to the same thing.
Also, a rushing of the court requires a large portion of the fans to feel the same way at the same time. One screaming idiot (not implying you're an idiot...) doesn't constitute a rushing of the court.
We're missing the main point at play here. The article was written by Rick Reily, therefore it has no merit.
if there are recruits in the house who willingly partake
...not rush the court during live play. That looks really bad.
you do it naked?
didn't we score a big time FB recruit out of the deal...who knows what might come of this?
the fact that this came out right after Ohio State fans rushed the court last night after beating an unranked bubble team at home to clinch only a share of the conference title. Classy move fellas...
But, it was Titus's senior night. Very big deal.
It looks like Dallas Lauderdale is about 47
But honestly, I was there in 1997 when we beat OSU to win the Big 10, finish the regular season ranked #1 and head to the Rose Bowl. It was a great moment, we all celebrated in the stands, and yet it would have been fantastic if a bunch of stupid morons hadn't decided they needed to be on the field to celebrate something they had no hand in. That lead to pepper spraying the crowd, which made things worse.
Look, the football team was going to head over to the student section to celebrate with you. The morons in the stands thought it was safe to jump 6-8ft down onto a cold, damp surface below, many intoxicated, to run out and not really celebrate with the team, but to mug for the cameras and put up their finger and indicate they were number one.
If there was a moment to rush the field, that might have been it. But beating UConn in the middle of a season in which we are mediocre. Guys, we have a national championship in basketball. We have vacated two other final fours. We made it to the second round of the tournament last year. There isn't a team in the Big Ten we haven't beaten in more than five years, is there?
We've already seen what happens when drunk idiot fans get on the field while the men that played in the game are trying to leave the field. some drunken idiot who couldn't survive one day of practice on any D1 sports team pops off something stupid to a player from the losing team, and they get pissed. We saw it happen at Miami University, at Nebraska, and at Oregon. And honestly, I hope the kids do get hurt by the student athlete when they're out there. Too bad people don't learn the lessons.
And let's not forget about the disaster that happened at Toledo when idiot students thought they had a right to tear down goal posts and run around with them. WHAT THE HELL DID YOU DO TO HELP TOLEDO WIN? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. Don't give me any BS about you where there and it helped your team win.
you just ripped the Toledo event when a guy in another thread was puffing his chest about being there when it happened makes me feel happy. like... Kool Aid guy just busted through my wall and gave me and my friends the party of a lifetime happy.
OH YAH indeed
I remember when Wake rushed the court to beat UNC last year. That was pathetic. When K-State beat Texas earlier this year and Texas was #1, the K-State fans restrained themselves from rushing.....classy move in my opinion. Gives the team more confidence and a feeling that they can do this more often.
